a 1440p oled 120hz rift would be absolutely killer!. I'm guessing we'll probably get either a 1080p OLED or 1440p LCD though
I personally would prefer a 1080p rift at this point, seeing as thats how I run my games anways and it would be nice to not HAVE to upgrade to a beefy GPU in order to play with the rift at all. Especially since with the SD rift while the pixels were noticable, when playing I didn't really notice them. And we all know the SD rift doesn't even use the full size of the screen, it only uses around half of it. With 1080p rift, we'll easily get it to use much more of the screen on top of it being a much higher pixel density to the point where you'd really have to nitpick to even complain about pixel density, I suspect. Especially if the display is done in OLED, where backlighting won't be an issue and there will probably be little to no spaces between each pixel.
But OLED would be brilliant on the rift. Imagine Metro Last Light with the rift - all of the dark, black areas will truely be dark and true black, especially with the rift not letting in any kind of background light.

You should always prefer higher res. If they released it with an 8K panel, you could still run it 1080p, with nonexistent screendoor because of the retardedly high pixel density.

Thats true.
Of course the cost of an 8K screen would be insane :v: especially in such a form factor.
It doesn't really need to be above 60hz. I would understand 120hz if it worked in the usual 3D-way where it flickers the screen to a different eye every x milliseconds.
Firstly, a higher refresh rate means more fluid movement of things on screen, and to point out to those curious, if the consumer Rift is going to use OLED, then 120hz and above should be possible, considering that OLEDs have INSANE refresh rates. With a little google-fu, i found that apparently OLED displays can have a refresh rate of 100,000hz, and a 0.01ms response time.
in my mind the higher the pixel density the better! as long as i can run 1080p60fps i'm happy
Some guy set up War Thunder + Rift in a retirement home and let a WW2 veteran pilot fly with it. Story coming tomorrow, as he has no time to write it today.

One of my best buds just had a chance to try out the Rift, and he's been buzzing about it. I'm crazy jealous.

Honestly, all it will do is give the guy a headache and wonder why he can't see shit.
I love my Oculus Rift and everything, but playing War Thunder just sucks at the low resolution and half the menus are broken.
I wanted to order a devkit, but it seems like it would be better to wait for a newer devkit/consumer version than to get the one available now. It sounds like they're releasing a better version soon, but I'm not sure about this. Do you guys think the next one is coming soon, or would it be better to get the one available now?

There probably won't be another dev kit before the consumer version release which is estimated to be sometime late 2014.
Hmm alright. Thanks for the info!
Apparently the Finnish "verkkokauppa.com" which is one of the biggest electronics shops/pc parts dealers in Finland is going to start selling consumer Rifts when they come out!

Translation:
0:05 guy is wow'ing
0:40 "man i gotta go buy myself this 3D personal viewing device" (yeah he words it strangely)
0:50 "you could stay a week in here"
0:56 "so when are you going to sell these?"
0:58 "most likely at the end of this year if possible"
1:00 "okay, how much does this thing cost?"
1:03 "that developer version costs $300, we're aiming to price the consumer version about the same"
[editline]21st September 2013[/editline]
yep theyre on the page

the price is a placeholder so ignore that, and all the details are just preliminary/placeholders too. but the important thing is that they've got a partnership with oculus, and finland is gonna get a whole lotta virtual

Any way to know which stores are demoing the devkit?
The tought of replaying Half Life 2 + EP1 and EP2 with Oculus rift and something like the hydra/STEM thing puts a big smile on my face!
Contains spoilers to the game, but this is just genius.

Also just by watching this I'm getting goosebumps. Just imagine if you sit comfortably in your own couch playing with the rift like this. I don't know but it feels like you would almost forget you're seeing a virtual living room after a while.
And then if something would walk by the doorway in another room behind the tv you would probably get a heart attack.
Finally got a chance to use the rift at the Arizona Indie Game Showcase at the Phoenix Art museum today. This game was one of the best I've played with the rift. It's interesting to see more than FPS games used with the rift

Also met the Offspring Fling dev, turns out he is here in Arizona
I'm actually considering buying the dev kit. Is it worth it or should I wait?
I'm actually considering buying the dev kit. Is it worth it or should I wait?
Rule of thumb seems to be: if you have to ask, probably just wait. The consumer version is going to be superior in every way.
Just bought the dev kit a few minutes ago
Order number: 075XXX
When should I expect the devkit to arrive? (the website says October but not sure if I should trust that)

You're probably right. I was just stuck watching a lot of oculus videos yesterday and I felt like I had to buy it right now.
But I guess I'll also have a better first experience if I wait for the consumer version.

Your probably going to get it within two weeks actually.
The farther you are from California, the faster you get it. No bullshit.

It is going to be shipped to Spain so pretty far away from California :P
Is it possible for the Oculus Rift to render different scenes for each eye ?
Since the brain merges input from both eyes into one "image" I am curious what would happen if each eye sees a different scene ? Eg. left eye sees the scene in color, the right one in greyscale what would be the merged scene... and stuff like that.

You would probably get a weird blending between the two scenes.
[editline]edit[/editline]
Made this to demonstrate what I mean, Crosseye the image and notice the colours alternating.

If you've ever worn anaglyph 3D glasses, you know what happens.
If you've ever worn anaglyph 3D glasses, you know what happens.
A massive headache? :v:
Urgh, is there a projection for when the consumer version will come out. I'm dying to use it when 3D modelling
If you've ever worn anaglyph 3D glasses, you know what happens.
There each eye still sees the same scene, and blends it into one image with a bit of 3D feeling added to it. I'm speaking of a situation when each eye sees something completely different, how would the brain react and merge those two ? Would it be "split screen", or just a mess ? :P

Either way, your on the EU queue which has a turn around time of 2 weeks to be processed.
What about the US? Probably longer?
