they made it to 100k base goal seems to be a stretch though
I'm by no means a kickstarter expert, but in my (small) experience, if a project get's close in it's last week or so, it usually receives a last minute funding rate increase and reaches is base funding goal, as (I assume) people see it on the "ending soon" lists and decide to help out. As well as early backers upping their pledges. I think it will make it.

So much scanning. Folks must think you're buying nuclear bombs over the internet Edit: They're probably trying it themselves.
So I backed the 5-point tracker reward tier on the STEM. Having to pre-order the Oculus and then wait for months that felt like years while other people were getting theirs is so not what I'm gonna be doing with the STEM.

I really hope long dark comes out. I'll definatly back it on its last leg, even though I never back anything (I prefer to pay for things when they come out and I can use them right there, I don't usually ever preorder stuff either). It just sounds like the PERFECT kind of game I want to play. northern wilderness, survival, etc. I love everything about that. Its pretty beautful looking too (concept wise at least). Only thing I hate is the logo is pretty much "The Walking Dead" except "The Long Dark"

The concept is nerd bait and it has plenty of experienced developers working on it. I made a thread about it, in case you didn't see it: http://facepunch.com/showthread.php?t=1312635
Just downloaded 4gb's of demos and such from the various rift enabled sites, installing half life and tf2 and now the loooooooooong wait for it to go into processing
backed the long dark
So you probably heard of this but posting it in this thread anyways. The new Galaxy Round phone has a 5,7 inch, 1080p curved screen. It's only gently curved because it's a phone, but the flexible screen could with high likelyhood be made into a damn fine HMD too, and the FoV would be massively better than with the flat screen of the current Rift.

It would probably make the design a whole lot sleeker as well.
saw this, it's not an oculus competitor but still a head mounted display, I'm reeeeally skeptical it's strain-free and high-realism feeling. The guy comes off like a CEO using random buzzwords at a press release http://reviews.cnet.com/wearable-tech/avegant-virtual-retinal-display/4505-34900_7-35828603.html

The way it works is with retinal projection, it basically shows up as a 80-inch screen floating 8 feet from your face. There's nothing "VR" about it. The good things are though that the technology doesn't use a screen - there is no screen door, as the pixels are invidually projected on your retina and perfectly seam together into a crisp and perfect image. At the moment it's fucking amazing for "Virtual TV" purposes, but for VR, they're gonna have to pull some magic to make it affordable and actually be wrap-around VR instead of a more advanced Sony HMZ.

Rift3 tech possibly?

Meaning your eye's lens would have to focus as well. That's supposedly the reason many people can't see artificial 3d; the image is still all on one plane.

The intesity depends on the distance of the object and can easily be simulated through pixel intesity like the one available in OLED displays. The frequency has -1 impact on your vision as long as you're not looking at something behind a glass of water, and again, that can also easily be simulated on a screen, all it takes is GPU power. I don't think colour needs any explanation.

Like 3D movies, almost all HMDs, including the Rift, present the image at a single distant focal plane, which means that unlike the real world, the brain cannot sense any depth information from the focus of the lens in the eyes. Instead the brain gets depth from the stereo pair of images by measuring how much the eyes have to rotate toward each other to look at an object – this is called “vergence”.
That's what I was basing my post off of.
http://www.oculusvr.com/blog/vr-sickness-the-rift-and-how-game-developers-can-help/ That's what I was basing my post off of.
That's because on a regular LCD screen you cannot output intensity. You have three paramenters R, B and G and to represent depth you need intensity and ray tracing.
I take it the rift uses LCD screens then and not OLEDs? Could be quite the immersion breaker when you're playing a game in a dark setting yet your eyes are still picking up light from the backlight of the LCD. Since I got my Galaxy Note 2, I was absolutely amazed at how the blacks are practically lightless - a full screen of black pixels can only be seen as being 'on' in absolute pitch darkness and even then it's so miniscule.
The current Rifts are LCD but as I understand it they're going to switch to OLED which is the way to go, for true blacks and such
If I ever get an oculus rift, I'm going to glue giant googly eyes on the front of it.
If I ever get an oculus rift, I'm going to glue giant googly eyes on the front of it.
I was going to put angry eyes on mine.
Hey everyone, I'm thinking about getting the Dev Kit of the Oculus Rift; I just don't know if I should wait for the consumer version. I just bought some brand new headphones that would go great with the Rift; so it's a bit of pressure. :v:
As always, wait for the consumer. The development version is neat to be able to try, but everyone not interested in burning cash should wait until the consumer version unless you're actually going to write programs for it. You'll hate yourself if you can't comfortably afford a second one, as the consumer edition will be far better.

Sounds about as safe as staring into the sun.
Projected on to the retina? Sounds about as safe as staring into the sun.
Yeah and using a cell phone is the same as placing your head in an active microwave.
Projected on to the retina? Sounds about as safe as staring into the sun.
Not any different from the light going into your eye right now.
Projected on to the retina? Sounds about as safe as staring into the sun.
Yeah I agree. Putting light... into your eye..? What is this lunacy? What idiot thought it would be a good idea to put normal levels of light into an organ specifically designed to detect light? Nothing good could come of that
Jeez all these weird ideas. That's almost as weird as putting food in your mouth and chewing on it. How do you even come up with these things?
