Sony just filed a patent for optical distortion correction. Similar to the Rift's. http://www.roadtovr.com/ps4-vr-hmd-sony-patent-optical-distortion-correction/ Hopefully this won't fuck over Oculus much, but this atleast confirms further that Sony is working on a very similar HMD of their own.
Well the whole idea behind Oculus was to get VR going, not to make millions of dollars.
Well the whole idea behind Oculus was to get VR going, not to make millions of dollars.
why shouldn't they make money off their amazing technology?
why shouldn't they make money off their amazing technology?
No I'm saying that they wanted to get VR moving again and this is a sign of that and the aim of the project wasn't originally to become millionaires. I'm not saying they shouldn't get any money. Why do people love to pick holes in post and draw negative conclusions?
Some interesting tidbits from a presentation http://gdcvault.com/play/1019290/Virtual-Reality-Gaming-and-Game
Nate Mitchell [--> at 49:50]: We are pushing for 90 - 120 FPS. What you're going to see is that Virtual Reality experience is running at 90 or 120 Hz. Palmer Luckey [--> at 1:05:25]: I've built versions of the Rift that actually utilize eye tracking.
Jezus.... Imagine 4k + 120fps + minimal latency in head tracking
100+ FPS? black magic
Jezus.... Imagine 4k + 120fps + minimal latency in head tracking
and eye tracking, with razor hydra on one of those vr walking things
someone make that tv game with the advancing wall with the human cutout where you match the pose or fall in the water, using kinect and/or hydra
someone make that tv game with the advancing wall with the human cutout where you match the pose or fall in the water, using kinect and/or hydra
kinect's latency is way to high, so it couldn't be full body
Another super high PPI display announced. http://www.j-display.com/english/news/2013/20131024.html [editline]24th October 2013[/editline] Unfortunately not a OLED though.
Nice to know I'll actually need a super computer to run this lol [editline]25th October 2013[/editline] Only games I can get close to 100+ FPS in are stuff like CSS

If that's the case this will crash and burn as it won't be actual VR and instead just a screen right in front of your eyes.
Nice to know I'll actually need a super computer to run this lol [editline]25th October 2013[/editline] Only games I can get close to 100+ FPS in are stuff like CSS
I'd consider upgrading to a decent computer if I were you.
I'd consider upgrading to a decent computer if I were you.
I can max most games I play fine right now, I just almost always float at around 30-45 FPS on some of my most intensive stuff which to me looks perfectly smooth (depending on the game though, games like Metro Last Light I need to run at mid/high to get that framerate consistently) Sure it'd be nice if I pushed 60fps but I'm not too fussed about it. If you pretty much need 120FPS in order to use an OR that would pretty much ensure that the only people who could use an OR are the people who have exclusively high end rigs, which would be kind of disappointing. Then again, I see 30-45 as perfectly smooth so this is probably simply a matter of taste. I'm sure that if you are really sensative to framerate though the OR would be like lifting shackles. And the OR will actually really benefit from being able to game at very high FPS all the time even if you see stuff at 30 as smooth, so.
New official update on the kickstarter page: http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1523379957/oculus-rift-step-into-the-game/posts/641101 Some tidbits:
At Gaming Insiders, Brendan talked about using a new VR prototype at Valve, which combines ultra low latency, precise head and positional tracking with low-persistence visuals for one of the most immersive and comfortable experiences ever. We can't share all the details yet, but we're taking the insights we've learned from that demo and applying them to the development process to make the consumer Rift even better.

We’re excited to introduce Marshall Cline, our new VP of Platform. Marshall is a world renowned software architect, engineer, PhD., and author of the legendary C++ FAQ.

To clarify: we’d like to ship a new development kit before the consumer version that provides near identical features that developers can build on and test against for the Rift’s launch. That said, we have no plans to announce a new development kit this year. The timing of a new dev kit is tied to the launch of the consumer Rift, and we’ll keep the community posted.
Well, that just confirmed Valve is working on their own thing. I thought they were just going to support the OR, but they seem to have some significant progress.
After seeing this, I can't wait any longer to buy a rift + hydra. Convince me to wait for the consumer version of the rift before I cave in[sp], please :([/sp]
It may be cheaper on release and it will be a lot smoother to use. Trust me, I'd love to buy one now, but know it's better to wait.
Here's this thread: 1. A post about some new technology or a new feature/game for the Rift 2. Three posts about that 3. Someone asking if they should buy the Dev Kit 4. Someone telling them to just fucking wait 5. Repeat

if you cave in and buy a dev kit just cuz then you're an idiot end of story
over a month later... still no processing email saying its shipping to me yet
if you cave in and buy a dev kit just cuz then you're an idiot end of story
Good thing you can allow yourself to call people idiots on the internet because they bought something. 10/10 would read again
Good thing you can allow yourself to call people idiots on the internet because they bought something. 10/10 would read again
strawman, what he's saying is that it is a display of stupidity to buy a vastly inferior product whose site even tells you not to, in the implied circumstance that you won't have the money to buy the final version in other words, you are an idiot if you ignore all warnings and spend your only cash on something only useful for developers and the cool factor
Good thing you can allow yourself to call people idiots on the internet because they bought something. 10/10 would read again
He means that if you buy it just because you can't wait for the retail one you're an idiot, and I can understand that. [editline]27th October 2013[/editline] late me. [editline]27th October 2013[/editline] I have one question though. Will the retail OR have all the stuff that the dev kit comes with including access to the unity plugins (I think?) and other stuff? If not then I need to work harder.
if you cave in and buy a dev kit just cuz then you're an idiot end of story
Unless have too much money to spend
Here's this thread: 1. A post about some new technology or a new feature/game for the Rift 2. Three posts about that 3. Someone asking if they should buy the Dev Kit 4. Someone telling them to just fucking wait 5. Repeat
Actually most of the time this thread hibernates between relevant news being posted, usually by Orkel.
After seeing this, I can't wait any longer to buy a rift + hydra. Convince me to wait for the consumer version of the rift before I cave in[sp], please :([/sp]
There will be better and lower cost tracking products then the hydra once the consumer version of the rift comes out. And no I'm not talking about stems.
For those of you who were interested in watching movies on the rift, skip to 13:14
