Though it'd be kinda awkward if you stumbled upon your friend watching tentacle porn or something..

[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS6IaVC-Nm8[/hd] A short tidbit of Carmack talking about the Rift's future
I like how at the end he comments on how VR could have happened years ago. Makes sense, with the current tech in the rift itself, it seems like the current stage of the dev kit could have happened in 2011.
[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS6IaVC-Nm8[/hd] A short tidbit of Carmack talking about the Rift's future
They couldn't possibly have picked a noisier location to record in.
Something called "OpenVR" was just added to Steam http://steamdb.info/app/250820/#section_history
For those interested, the Oculus Rift Configuration Utility can now be installed via Steam as well by clicking here. This is not any different from the application you can already download outside of Steam, but this way it'll stay up to date. EDIT: Goddamnit Orkel EDIT2: There seem to be "OpenVR" DLLs too. Investigatoring.
Dependency Walker found these entry points in the .dlls: Nothing too exciting (yet), but the whole OpenVR thing sounds pretty good.

EDIT: It looks like a library to interface with multiple types of head mounted displays, with current driver support for the Oculus and only one folder indicating possible internal support for Valve's Vortex project. There's several functions indicating it is designed to work with different HMD's.
Yeah, that's pretty cool. It kind of seems like they're aiming at a one-size-fits-all framework for Virtual Reality devices. If the "vortex" thing really is the Valve project, that is.
Small update on this, the TF2 Halloween update removed the existing Oculus Rift libraries and added the new OpenVR stuff.
Small update on this, the TF2 Halloween update removed the existing Oculus Rift libraries and added the new OpenVR stuff.
Excuse my ignorance but what is this OpenVR stuff? [editline]30th October 2013[/editline] All I can find on it, is some African Voter Registration http://www.openvr.org/
Here's this thread: 1. A post about some new technology or a new feature/game for the Rift 2. Three posts about that 3. Someone asking if they should buy the Dev Kit 4. Someone telling them to just fucking wait 5. Repeat
Well I suppose, but I've been talking about the Rift since the kickstarter, VR is something that I've wanted for a long time, so it was good to put my name on the kickstarter list. Before the Rift, I wanted to buy the Sony HMZ-T1. I'm not a dev (too dumb for that) but I don't regret getting the Rift Dev kit.
steam://install/250820/
I don't need to install it I just wanna know whats different to it then the normal TF2 VR software.
I don't need to install it I just wanna know whats different to it then the normal TF2 VR software.
There's some info here under VR.
[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZS6IaVC-Nm8[/hd] A short tidbit of Carmack talking about the Rift's future
I'm getting that dev kit 2.0.
There's some info here under VR.
Danke.
I'm getting that dev kit 2.0.
I'd rather wait for consumer unless you're an active developer, though I'm betting it'd probably be just a LITE consumer version just to be an early release to help devs finalize their stuff
I'd rather wait for consumer unless you're an active developer, though I'm betting it'd probably be just a LITE consumer version just to be an early release to help devs finalize their stuff
And a double-check to make sure they're on the right track and mostly free of errors (software and hardware).
I'd rather wait for consumer unless you're an active developer, though I'm betting it'd probably be just a LITE consumer version just to be an early release to help devs finalize their stuff
I don't have any issue buying the devkits. I don't regret getting the original devkit, the only issue I had with it was more to do with me getting sick because of the lower res but for that 30 minutes or it's really cool. The consumer version is too far off for me to wait. But you can do whatever you want.
Oculus clarifies that there will be single consumer kit at launch that supports both Android and PC (first it was wrongly reported they'd be two different versions): http://www.engadget.com/2013/11/01/oculus-rift-consumer-version-interview/ Don't confuse this with the onboard Android system that Carmack described, that's for future versions.
Finally got to see a 120 fps monitor and the difference of 60 and 120 is in fact as noticeable as 30 to 60. So hoping Rift will get 120 since it's a huge deal for immersion.

It doesn't make sense that they keep talking about all these features they want to add and mention that they have loads more secret features only to not let devs get their hands on that stuff before release

Will come "in tandem" with the consumer release, probably a little bit earlier.
[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ia8GC4ZL1Y[/hd] Look at me I'm Orkel
[hd]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6ia8GC4ZL1Y[/hd] Look at me I'm Orkel
Oh man that level design is amazing.
I got to try the OR (and Hydra) yesterday and it's pretty fucking good. Sadly enough I was trying it with a really shitty horror game, so I didn't get a lot more than simple trees and stuff. It's really strange to be able to look up and see mountain ridges and trees above you instead of a roof 1 meter above you. It does really help using a Hydra though, as it feels much more natural (seeing how you had a flashlight which you could move around with your hand, which was really fun)
