Grow up. You aren't even aware of how silly you'd look by buying it because "I just can't wait another year".
You're making it sound like you're the authority on what makes people look silly and what doesn't. Why should he care if he'd look silly in your eyes? Why should he care how it makes him look to any of us, for that matter? His decision is none of our business.

The reason people post here or come here at all is because they care about the input they recieve to some extent.
Whether they decide to act upon that input or not is what is their business.
"It's just your opinion so why should anyone care" is a thing I've come across quite a few times lately on internet forums, and it seems like an incredibly redundant thing to say.
Why are people making a fuss about others buying dev kits right now? If you've got money to spend, love gaming, and are genuinely interested in VR, go ahead and buy one. Just don't forget to do your research and know what you're getting. I don't regret getting my Rift at all, even though I don't have the time and resources to work on VR games right now. It's fun to try current Rift demos and games, and it's even more fun to let friends and family play with it.

I wasn't claiming to be any kind of authority. It's just an objective fact that someone that impatient will look silly by not waiting a year for an infinitely better version of the same thing. It's literally nothing but a waste of a large amount of money for a less-than-stellar experience, which the consumer version will be.

An yet buying it in a year your experience would be: "Oh this is so much better than the devkit" and "There's so much more content available now" and "My family and friends are receiving the same or more enjoyment from playing around with this thing"
Fair enough if you wanted to buy it, fair enough if you have the money. Just saying that IMO it's a silly thing to do if you're not developing for it.

Yes, but that's in a year. Now is today, and today I'm preaching the upcoming VR revolution to everyone willing to listen and put a weird-looking HMD on their head. For some people it's not that much money for that experience.
I don't even play games in the regular sense anymore, my only use for it will probably be cinema in gmod or trying out demos

GMod support never worked though, and won't work for the foreseeable future. Valve's Rift library crashes so Garry either needs Valve to fix it (fat chance) or make his own Rift library (but the audience is too small to justify the development time at the moment).

That someone looks silly is not a fact. It's a sentiment. It is you liking or disliking what he does or doesn't. That doesn't make it a fact. And I hope it doesn't mean shit to him, because it really shouldn't matter how you LOOK. All that should matter is if he's comfortable with his own decision.
I could just as well tell you that you're making yourself look silly by deciding to forego something that is real and available today for something that merely exists as a concept in the future. Who the fuck knows where you'll be in one year? If you have the desire now, and the money now, why would you wait just because the experience may get better in one year?
One year from now, a competitor may be announcing an even better and cheaper alternative to the Rift for 2015, and you'd probably decide not to go for the Rift because it would be stupid not to wait for the new product... All the while everyone else around you is enjoying themselves with their Rift while you aren't, for fear of missing out on something that may be even better.

It's true that people post on forums for input, but the person in question obviously wasn't looking for input on how silly they'll look if they buy a devkit; useful information to this person was whether it was a bad idea or not. Which is why I told him it was, in my opinion, a bad idea. (Whether he takes my advice is up to him)
Telling someone they'll look silly is a rude, unsolicited opinion intended to manipulate the person by making them afraid of being thought poorly of.
I still think consumers should get out of the way regardless to make way for the actual developers. That's the only reason I haven't gotten one yet; because I won't help the industry at all by owning the developer product.

Oh, hell no, of course it's interesting to listen to other people's opinions.. It's mostly what forums are for. That wasn't what I meant.
Maybe the last part about his decision being none of our business went a little too far, but the rest was solely aimed at having your decision influenced not by what's sensible or useful or whatever but by whether it makes you "look silly" in another's eyes. And that's not opinion. That's what RyanDaniels explained so eloquently above.

Sgt. Napalm has a good point there. With the limited numbers, it's best to leave the devkits in the hands of people who can help make the product better.
Qualcomm has introduced a mobile chip that will play back 4K video on smartphones and tablets in addition to supporting the latest 802.11ac Wi-Fi.
The Snapdragon 805 chip, announced on Wednesday, could be Qualcomm’s fastest performing chip. The quad-core chip operates at a clock speed of 2.5GHz and has the latest Adreno 420 graphics engine, which can process 4K or UltraHD video at a 3840 x 2160-pixel resolution.
Snapdragon 805 will reach devices in the first quarter of next year, Qualcomm said.
So I've used my rift for about a week now, And I've sold it again making just a little over 130usd in the proces.
Aka I got paid 130usd for playing with the rift :v:

It's not for playback on your phone's screen.
Marktplaats?
Yeah.
Is the devkit Oculas Rift worth grabbing? what are the pro's and cons? how long roughly until full release?

If you have to ask then wait for the consumer version.
[editline]22nd November 2013[/editline]
Consumer out next year some time probably.

Only get it if you're truly interested in the technology and appreciate the concept, If you're planning on getting the devkit simply because you think its cool to game with it, then don't. You will be highly disappointed by the resolution.
I was about to dish out for a Dev Kit for this until I saw the final price.
The 300 dollars is fine for the device but since I live in the UK it's an extra 100 dollars for shipping and tax.
Damn...

The Dev Kits are sent from the UK, you won't have to pay customs, only shipping.
Oh man now that Carmack is no longer with id hopefully he can invest 100% of his time on the rift.

How come it was adding a truck load onto my final price then, put me off buying it.
and they should only be charging like £5 - £10 for shipping.

The shipping costed me ~50€ to Spain.
I didn't pay customs and the Oculus arrived in around 3 days.
My friend bought a Rift. He's bringing it over in a few hours for me to try it. What should I download?
I hear the space simulator thing is great
