Just curious, I'm thinking about saving up for a consumer Rift and maybe making some short 3d stuff for it if it's possible to do so.
One question though, is I don't know how it adjusts the image. Would it work with prerendered visuals, since it needs to be calibrated for the user?
That depends on what you mean by "short 3d stuff." If you're talking about CG short films or something along those lines, the Rift isn't really designed for that.
I'm gonna make a virtual cinema when i buy one if nobody's done a proper one at that point.
Would be really cool.
Isn't there one already bundled with the Rift demo software?
That's honestly the only reason I'd buy one... Not so much for the games, more for the ability to strap an IMAX screen to my face.
hm yeah i saw some on youtube, that's probably gonna be the main pasttime of mine in the future
Oh, anyone know if you can watch 3D films on it?
I can't see 3D at theaters due to my corrective lenses interfering with the polarization on passive 3D systems, so the Rift might just be my chance to watch things like Avatar and such things.

Yeah, sorry for being vague. Haven't people been talking about watching films and such with the Rift? If it's not really meant to be though I'd still love to have one for gaming and such.

well that should't be that difficult though?

I was more or less wondering if the way it renders 3D would cause any sort of distortion in the films.

not really? since it already has two images it'll put one on each eye? sounds simple to me but i dunno :v:

Well, you know how the lenses inside work. It renders a sort of rounded image, and the lenses correct it into a rectangular 3D thing. I guess if it can do games without distortion, it should handle movies too, but in games you have the benefit of a free camera.
And if it can do movies it should be able to do 3D CG films as well, so fingers crossed.

dammet
Oh what a shitty post I've made :(
Buying this mostly because after learning Unity and doing a few things with it last year in an interactive media class, I am very interested in messing around with the development kit, anyone here doing it for that, and not to play VR games early?
Me. I just want to fart around with 3D stuff. Not unity specifically, but marmoset, renders, etc.

Where's all this tax bullshit from and 30 dollars for shipping?
I can get a courier to pick it up for cheaper.
If I remember correctly, that super cool rift theatre has a 3D movie button, so I'm guessing it DOES support 3D films.
Don't go thinking supporting 3D films on a computer is madness; one guy even wrote a utility to convert 3D movie files into a format the nintendo 3DS can display.

mind you, it will work best directly infront of the cinema screen, just like in a real-world 3D showing
One thing I really want that probably already has been made is a virtual desktop that wraps around your head.
It does support 3d films. And it's a much deeper 3d than what you see at a real theater.
Man I just want to place some sort of order on the Consumer version, I don't care about the release date as much to be honest.
I wounder if Oculus will do a showcase at Austin sometime, I really want to try out too.
You know, the hardware engineering group has a couple Rifts in one of their rooms on campus. Maybe I'll go ask to try it out.

Another push to VR's ass towards mainstream. Connecting the game with one of the biggest MMOs out there.

I love how simple that treadmill idea is. No need for them grooves and special shoes like omni. Just get a slippery surface and some socks lol

So, first thing anyone should do with an Oculus is to watch Pacific Rim?

A Pacific Rim game where you can switch between cockpit and robot povs would be amazing if you had it set up with that rig that guy in the above video had.

I'm glad more people seem to be showing only one of the screens from the Rift now. Watching Youtube demonstrations with both screens on there felt a little pointless!
