that looks pretty crazy

argh why does everyone call it an oculus [editline]6th December 2013[/editline] but also, ahhh exciting
argh why does everyone call it an oculus [editline]6th December 2013[/editline] but also, ahhh exciting
"What kind of phone is that?" "Oh, it's an Apple." We all understand what they mean so even if it might sound kinda funny it ultimately doesn't matter.
Because oculus: noun a round or eyelike opening or design, in particular. and rift noun a crack, split, or break in something.
I think his question was not where the name comes from, but why people were calling it the Oculus instead of the Rift.
I think his question was not where the name comes from, but why people were calling it the Oculus instead of the Rift.
it's more accurate to the device. It's more of an occulus then a rift... I guess
it's more accurate to the device. It's more of an occulus then a rift... I guess
This post raises another question. Why do people say "occulus"
I think his question was not where the name comes from, but why people were calling it the Oculus instead of the Rift.
If you mention something more then once in a sentence it's proper to identifying what you're talking about with other names.
Well it really only has one name; it's a "Rift". "Oculus" only comes into because it's the company's name. That said, I catch myself calling mine an Oculus every once in a while. I don't really think it matters.
I've always considered it as the "Oculus Rift" in the same way it's the "Apple iPhone," where the actual device is called the "Rift." I actually have no idea if the device's formal name is "Oculus Rift" or "Rift."

As it happens, it seems people tend to call it the "Oculus" de facto. If Oculus ever releases another product different from the Rift, this would likely change.
Let's take a moment to imagine how awesome the product Oculus makes after the Rift would be.

ahhhhhhh [t]http://puu.sh/5IsaM.png[/t] [editline]10th December 2013[/editline] should I change my delivery address to my uni address? i'm not going home till the 21st so I don't want it to arrive here the day after I leave...
Apple got granted a detailed HMD patent today. http://www.patentlyapple.com/patently-apple/2013/12/apple-granted-a-knockout-head-mounted-display-system-patent.html

I can't believe something so vague can be listed. It's like they're literally filing for patents on every possible feature in one go because the device "may" include them.
copyright law pisses me off
It's a good thing Oculus is using a completely different system for the Rift, where one screen is split into two viewpoints. But yes, most patent law is atrocious. In this case, however, entirely justified. Why? Because Apple's been working on and patenting this stuff since 2006. They actually got to it a long time before most other companies did, aside from Sony, who sort of does their own thing. I don't mind it. If Apple's got one, and Oculus has got one, and Valve has got one, then the VR space will have enough competition to keep it going.

I'm mostly a consumer, but I might be doing some development here and there with it. Is it worth it if it's mainly used for playing games and such? I don't think I can wait until late 2014 to pick up a consumer version. Also, what are the estimated shipping times?
the best example of the dev kit's visual quality i've read is that hl2 cops look like pixel figures from afar [editline]10th December 2013[/editline] holy christ that one poster wasn't kidding the article has 50 mays
That isn't bad, but I'm in the US. Are you a developer? I'm still iffy on whether or not I should buy it (consumer), but I'm REALLY interested in the idea of VR.
Don't. Wait. Dev kit is awesome for the first 30~ minutes, then the resolution gets to you and buyers remorse will sink in.

I will be doing dev stuff with it, and hopefully dissertation work with it next year, but also lots of games and just general intrigue.
The UPS guy is out for delivery on mine. I'm very excited, damn it.
Don't. Wait. agreed, in 20 years time you'll be able to say you own the very first real breakthrough in modern virtual reality

Same here, Bought one and played with it for a week. then sold it again and made a nice profit of just over a 100usd
