That could be a pretty cool movie concept.
But it'd propably have M. Night Shyamalan directing it. I feel it in my bones.
Looks like Sony is gonna reveal their PS4 HMD at CES 2014.

Sony's pretty good on hardware. It'll be interesting to see what they have.
I can't stand the idea of some company stepping in and stealing the spotlight on VR from Oculus, then acting like it was their idea all along.

Just wait for Apple to sue them for patent infringement. It's bound to happen if the Rift really explodes in popularity.

That would be the biggest kick in the balls ever.
Surely Oculus have their bases covered in terms of patents?
Surely Oculus have their bases covered in terms of patents?
all it takes is one precisely vague wording to undermine a single feature in order to secure a grip in a case. Apple even hinting at the possibility of a patent lawsuit on anything smaller than a corporation could be a death sentence

I feel like I'm turning into an Oculus fanboy without ever having actually seen one of their products in person. It's absurd.

It's hard to be on anybody else's side when they have absolutely nothing to show for themselves except crappy VR headsets.
The rift still has a long, long way to go but it's already has achieved more things than any other headset has done -- and has done better than any of them have done it. And it still doesn't even have a production model.
It's one of the few products that I think is going to stay on the tippy-top of the scale simply because every major PC gaming company has focused on supporting the rift. Apple can make their own model; Sony can make their own model (which is okay since it's primarily for PS4 more than likely) and microsoft can make their own, but they'll never steal the spotlight away from the rift.
That's like if star citizen comes out with an alpha/beta for public access that anybody who bought a ship can get in on and suddenly microsoft shits out freelancer 2. Are the SC fans going to leave SC even after they've already invested so much in to it?
So long as the product delivers and stays on top of the hype then the rift will forever be the champion. They've already made their name known: now they just have to be good on their word.

Apple/Microsoft and the likes have the power of the stupid masses though. You go ask anyone on the street, which one does he know? Apple or Oculus? If they pull a gaming HMD of their own you'll be damn sure it will do better and be more known than the Rift, other than within gaming enthusiasts like us.
I don't really see the appeal of a HMD for non-gamers and serious movie enthusiasts(for the true 3d theater experience).
Apple especially hasn't really had anything to do with the gaming world which HMDs are geared toward.
Apple releases head mounted display. Ask the stupid masses and they'd probably go like "what do i use it for" or something
Candie Crush 3D
Angry Birds 3D
And uhh
Nanosaur
Hm... Now this could be interesting.
All I hope is that Sony does what they did for headphones this generation, and try to offer compatibility for other HMDs besides their own.
That probably won't happen, but hey! A man can dream, right?

Most people don't even know the Rift exists, some might be vaguely aware of it but it is still a relatively unknown thing outside of people who follow PC gaming news. If the average uninformed consumer went into a store and saw the Oculus Rift on a shelf sitting next to a Sony or Microsoft HMD I can guarantee they would go with brand they recognise over what they would probably assume is some third party knock-off. Oculus definitely have their core audience but it isn't wide enough to guarantee commercial success against the big tech players.
Even if they are first out the gates to release it, I doubt many people will see it as much more than an expensive novelty until they either try it out or a well known company like Sony releases one for consoles and it starts getting taken seriously.

It was on the cover of the Wall Street Journal Magazine a while back, when they did their 2014 Technology Issue.
And I agree entirely. Oculus really needs to solidify their position as leader of the PC VR sector... Maybe they'll run an advertising campaign running up to launch.
I think the best thing for them to do would be to get some demos on shop floors for people to try out when it is close to release. It's all well and good having it in magazines but I doubt people are going to be really interested until they can try it out for themselves.

Also a great idea. I'd love to see Rift kiosks at Best Buy, and I'm sure that would definitely win over the consumer public.

I don't recall the portable tablet ever being something of a niche product. It's a simple handheld tool for connecting to people. Anyone can find a use for it.
Little Joe Normal who isn't a gamer with a PC capable of that res couldn't really do anything with a HMD other than look at a movie alone or something. He'd rather buy like a 3d-enabled TV and glasses or something.
The rift is more of a niche product for gamers than anything else IMO.
Though I may be objectively wrong, Idunno.
I also agree, right now the applications are a bit niche, but just like we never used to need diamonds for weddings, if someone with enough money and marketing knowhow pulls the strings, they might become a big thing anyhow. If anyone could do it Apple could. Personally if 3D glasses in theaters were replaced with some sort of HMD and the parts that would get gross from contact could be replaced- that might be kind of interesting to look into.
Obviously I'm with everyone else rooting for Oculus though. Fuck Apple as I post from my iPad that I won from my school :F

Two answers:
1. "Oh, a new Apple product. I MAS HAV IT !!!"
2. "I can't carry this outside to show off, can't take snapshots in the mirror with it to post on FB and twitter. No buy ."

If you haven't already read it, addresses the problems the first version of the OR will inevitably have.
New prototype spotted?

It's not the HD prototype. The edges are curved, indicating a possible higher FoV? Also some kind of camera bulge in the middle?

If that's an AR-enabled Rift... My God...
If you're talking about applications for the Rift beyond PC gaming, I'd say education is a huge one. And not in the same way people get all excited about handing out iPads to elementary kids. The Rift would legitimately be a great learning tool.
May be a dumb question, but would it be worth getting a devkit version, or just wait until the consumer version comes out. I'm guessing the latter, but I'm rather excited about this.

Read just a few pages of this thread. Or the Oculus site.
The short answer is wait.
The long answer is read into it because you're going to be really disappointed with the dev kit if you are only getting it to play games on
Yep, wait, unless you're going to do actual development stuff with it soon, otherwise just wait for devkit 2 or consumer version this coming year.
