New prototype spotted? It's not the HD prototype. The edges are curved, indicating a possible higher FoV? Also some kind of camera bulge in the middle?
It's a security tag, not part of the rift.
It's a security tag, not part of the rift.
That or they had to extend that area for the motor in the unit. I recall seeing a schematic of the Rift and there was a bulge there from just that... I can't find the imagine on Google, but i'm pretty sure I saw it here in this thread.
Most people don't even know the Rift exists, some might be vaguely aware of it but it is still a relatively unknown thing outside of people who follow PC gaming news. If the average uninformed consumer went into a store and saw the Oculus Rift on a shelf sitting next to a Sony or Microsoft HMD I can guarantee they would go with brand they recognise over what they would probably assume is some third party knock-off. Oculus definitely have their core audience but it isn't wide enough to guarantee commercial success against the big tech players. Even if they are first out the gates to release it, I doubt many people will see it as much more than an expensive novelty until they either try it out or a well known company like Sony releases one for consoles and it starts getting taken seriously.
All they would have to do is actually try the HMD on and instantly know who to go for. [editline]21st December 2013[/editline]
If you're talking about applications for the Rift beyond PC gaming, I'd say education is a huge one. And not in the same way people get all excited about handing out iPads to elementary kids. The Rift would legitimately be a great learning tool.
The military will probably be very interested as well. They've always wanted to do VR for training. Here we are. Hell, for any sort of training simulation, the OR could probably be cheaply adapted.

Oculus dev confirms they'll be answering a lot of questions at CES.
It's been a year and we still dont have very clear answer to some questions like : _What will be the release screen resolution ? _What will be the expected improvment of the release version , or the dev kit 2 ? _when will there be a devkit 2 ? _what are the demo meeting of occulus rift, wich model is it, what are the feedbacks of the testers ? _will there be a"mobile" model ? _What is the advancement/problems of the positional tracking ? _What are the new ideas of improvment, being studied since one year ? _What partnership will you make, will you be able to order screen from Samsung ?

@Tgaud: Most of your questions will be answered early next year. There are some exciting developments, but it makes more sense to announce them at major industry trade-shows and not just on our blog or forum where we will get limited coverage.
https://developer.oculusvr.com/forums/viewtopic.php?f=26&t=5611&p=77239#p76672
Opened up the rift, calibrated, played HL2. Thoughts, screen resolution isn't killing the Rift, been playing for 3 hours with no problems, and no VR sickness. Second off, Ravenholm almost made me shit myself with the Rift. Can't wait to fuck about with the dev tools.
And just watched the first Gurren Lagann movie on VR Cinema. Jesus fuck this is the best 300$ I've ever spent. Think I might shell out 40$ for the VorpX drivers so I can try Bioshock Infinite on Rift.
For Christmas I have a few hundred to Amazon. I wonder if I should wait for the consumer Rift on the off chance that they sell it on Amazon.
For Christmas I have a few hundred to Amazon. I wonder if I should wait for the consumer Rift on the off chance that they sell it on Amazon.
Just about everything ends up on Amazon.
If not, there's always eBay.

They're speculated to launch a consumer edition this year, right?
Fuck, it's so hard to not just buy a devkit. Please guys tell me bad things about the devkit to stop the evil Oculus demon inside me.
shanty, wait for the consumer version, devkit is really cool but really not at the point where you can properly play games with it for instance
So what do we know about the consumer version so far?
much higher res, positional tracking
much higher res, positional tracking
And considerably lower movement-to-screen latency. Been demoing my Rift to some more friends last week. The Dreadhalls game is the best thing after the RiftCoaster to get reactions out of people.

A question for you guys who've had the Rift for a while: is it still amazing or does the novelty kind of wear off after a time?
And to add onto that: Do you still use the Rift often, or do you prefer more convenient kinds of gaming?
The way the guys at Oculus are talking, they make it seem like they're very close to an actual Consumer V1. What do you guys think the over/under is for them actually giving some sort of solid date for anything at CES?
A question for you guys who've had the Rift for a while: is it still amazing or does the novelty kind of wear off after a time?
You do get more used to it over time, but it's still a whole new paradigm. It's not a gimmick, I'm convinced that VR will cement itself as a widespread form of gaming.
And to add onto that: Do you still use the Rift often, or do you prefer more convenient kinds of gaming?
I still game like I normally do. The Rift mostly has demos and older retrofitted games supporting it at the moment. It doesn't stop me from enjoying a game of Battlefield 4 on my monitor, but if I could play it in the Rift the immersion factor would skyrocket. Once the consumer version launches, I expect we'll see a new form of gaming, and entirely new genres appear.
http://www.roadtovr.com/wired-article-image-hold-clues-oculus-rift-2-0s-positional-tracking/ Also it's possible the little bumps on the sides (if they're not rivets) are LEDs part of the system like this: http://www.roadtovr.com/posittron-diy-oculus-rift-positional-tracking-virtual-reality/
I would not mind positional head tracking.
Luckey confirms that the consumer version will not arrive before summer. We're in for a wait. http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/1u1kuh/oculus_rift_1080p_dev_version_release/cedluj2?context=3
then i'll order a dev version
Showed my friend the Rift. Kind of threw him into it though. Gave him Left4Dead as his first experience since he never played it. Gave him controller and good headphones. Turned volume on high for maximum immersion. First part on No Mercy he goes down the stairs, zombie jumps at his face, blows off its head, pauses the game, and just says that hes done. He loves the Oculus Rift, but I scared the crap outta him with it. Wasn't expecting that.
