I think the consumer rift is going to be pretty disappointing on at least one aspect, though I have confidence it'll do VR properly at the very least.
I'm mostly worried that A. The consumer rift is still a very long way off, and if it is even possible for it to come out this year like planned then it will be extremely short on supply B. That it will be very expensive and C. That it requires a very high end computer to get even close to working right (i.e. if your video card isn't at least $300 in cost you might as well not try).
That's the part I am most worried about, whether my system can handle the rift. My 570 is getting a bit too close to its retirement age nowadays.
I'm worried that my 6870 won't be up to scratch. I can afford a new GPU, an Oculus Rift, but probably not both.

No point in worrying about that really. Game developers do their research. The performance target will be higher, so compromises will be made in order for games to meet that requirement for the majority of customers. Plus I expect most of the popular VR titles to be coming from indies in the first few years.
Have we really any idea what kinda rigs are running at these events they show off the rift or even have official word on any form of specs? I run a 680, handles any game i want smooth as butter, but i dunno how the rift will hold up as most examples from youtubers seem to say that its at 30fps (currently) and they usually try it on low end games built for the rift/
Even if you don't have a great GPU you could always play older and lighter games.

I've always found bad/pixelated graphics to be incredibly charming in a game.
I'm scared that way of thinking won't help me in VR though.

I'll look forward to seeing Quake 1 in Rift just as much as the fanciest upcoming thing.
Let's think about this for a second, shall we?
The game is rendering two viewports. Possibly the best way to understand how that'll run would be to take your current framerate and cut it in half.
Now, that's not entirely accurate, but it does help to visualize. A better method would be to play a game in 3D, on a 3D monitor. You would get similar framerates there.
Considering most modern GPUs (Including my 560Ti) can run Skyrim on Ultra in 3D at 60fps, I think anyone with a 560Ti or above won't have too many issues with the Rift.
I have a 560Ti and I can't run Skyrim at 70fps on high with just one monitor, so beware your mileage may vary.

CPU?
I'm running an i5-2500k.
Oh, I also remembered something. You're only running one vertical half of a 1080p monitor with the current Rift per view. That'll no doubt help with framerates.
I look forward to reexperiencing older games like quake or half life 1 in the rift over the newer games.
Imagine Trespasser...
I just want a proper first person mode in World of Tanks and the Rift is sold.

I have an i5-2500k and I don't get anywhere near that either with a 560ti
then again I do run every graphics mod on earth so I feel stoked to get 30fps
Still though I'm pretty sure even with standard skyrim on ultra everything (including all the sliders) there is no way I consistantly stay above 60FPS, it would likely be 45 average for me. If my sliders are stunted, then maybe but thats technically not "ultra"
I am saying that because Oculus said several times that consoles are not powerful enough for the Rift to work properly, so they are focusing mainly on the PC.
Yeah I'm sure that's just words.
If a developer WANTED it to work with a PS3 game, there's no reason why they wouldn't make it work.
I mean, come on, what makes it so resource intensive? I don't really see it.

Yeah, you're right. The only reason there's no PS4 Rift is because Sony won't add the features the Rift needs to the OS.

That's bizarre... I'm going to go with mods, if only because when I tested it, I was playing vanilla. I rarely had frame drops in Skyrim. Did you use the High Resolution Textures DLC?

They don't even need to add any features, they'd just need to whitelist the hardware. The games handle the software side of things. Problem is that with every iteration of the Rift, it'd need to be added to the whitelist again. Plus, I don't think consoles have storage options for arbitrary data that could be used across different games (such as your IPD settings).
I cant wait for vidya games that take advantage of the fact you have two viewpoints.
Like in a stealth shooter, it could be a plot point to have an eye shot out and you'd only see out of the other eye with the rift.
Or puzzle games that require you to basically close one eye to see a picture clearly, because the picture might only appear in one eye.

Or none of the above because those sound annoying as hell :v:

Yes yes, let's develop virtual reality headgear then include video games like like zero-depth-perception pirate simulator, so you can enjoy the fun of looking at a tiny monitor with one eye ball yarrr
Don't know if I can post it here, but I just got myself a pair of Hydras. And they're pretty cool.
Was screwing around in the Tuscany demo when I thought of a way to get out of boundaries.

I really can't wait for the consumer rift. It will be amazing.

It's not that the rift itself is resource intensive, it's that the games are. The PS3 can barely run modern games at 30 fps in <720p - there's no way you can have a great modern looking game running at 60fps in 1080p on a PS3 or 360.

WipEout HD for the PS3 qualifies as a great modern looking game for me, and it runs in 60FPS at 1080p.

Of course the video doesn't do the game justice, but just imagine this being a lot smoother and in a higher resolution :v:

This was also the first full game on PSN, so it was a very early PS3 game.
I'm sure the PS3 could handle the oculus rift, but I can also see why the oculus doesn't really fit that market.
Imagine cockpit view in wipeout with an oculus rift. Woah.

I think your sense of balance would give up :v:
Flaming Cliffs 3 or any DCS game with OR is gonna be awesome. Or anything that involves flying.
Too bad you can't feel the g's.

How the fuck does a 4K TV become more popular?
[editline]13th January 2014[/editline]
I voted on all three of my devices.
How the fuck does a 4K TV become more popular?
because it's in the ballpark of "not overpriced" which is something people didn't expect from a 4K tv.
[editline]13th January 2014[/editline]
oculus is better though
