So I can't use it as an HMD, without all the fluffy theatre crap? Is there something special about the Rift that causes the motion sickness when used as an HMD, or is this something that's more or less standard across the board? Would you ever just get used to it?
If yours eyes are telling you you're moving when you're not; you can get simulator sickness. The reverse is true as well of course, if your head is telling you you're moving and your eyes aren't then I imagine it's not a fun experience.

So, how do the other HMDs, like the ones sold by Sony, prevent this?

I remember last year at I think E3, they had a 1080p Rift on display with a theater app. People reported that the presence was astounding, it was like actually physically being in a theater, but with several advantages such as improved 3D and the removed need to deal with lighting issues. When I get a Rift, I'm wondering if I'll want to watch all of my DVDs from within the virtual theater. [editline]21st January 2014[/editline]
Oh... So, how do the other HMDs, like the ones sold by Sony, prevent this?
Well, before the displays weren't ultra wide FOV. before, it was like staring at a screen floating in space several feet in front of you.
Changeable lenses/screen would do the job, and even deal with the inevitable resolution issue.
Some indie dev claims to have spoken with a PS4 developer that "spilled beans" about an HMD for the PS4 that isn't the shitty hmz. The source is quite reliable, one of the biggest VR blogs around, but yeah.. just one isn't enough, so I'm not going to keep my hopes up. Lots of pleasing info. VR, at this point, is more about these companies thinking forward and long-term about the medium as a whole. This stuff is in good hands. The devs I spoke to talked about the actual PlayStation VR headset. They described Super Stardust VR to me and explicitly talked about how it was different than the HMZ line. Sony has been working on VR for ages, longer than people realize. They’re pretty thrilled to see VR taking off just as their tech is maturing and are interested in the long-term future of the medium, [not] just their own headset.
First it was the tokyo trade show or whatever, then CES, and now we wait for GDC 2014 which is in March.
MTBS3D’s Neil Schneider says that “insider contacts have told me to wait for GDC,” regarding a Sony VR gaming headset.
cross your fingers

Whereas in a 3d movie, unless it's doing a point-of-view shot, your brain is less likely to get confused and think your eyes are telling you your head is turning but your ears aren't picking up any acceleration.

So watching Let's Plays of Skyrim in the Rift isn't a good idea?
That makes sense... So watching Let's Plays of Skyrim in the Rift isn't a good idea?
You could watch a bit to get a feeling of how it looks, but I'm pretty sure you'd get uncomfortable after a while.
You wouldn't have to have the whole theater thing though. Thats nice for an effect, but all that's really is required to watch movies on the rift or video, would be visually set it up so whatever you are looking at is just a screen infront of you that takes up 70-80% of your front facing vision. Like at an IMAX or something. Everything around the screen would just be black. Your rift would then track your head normally and the screen would basically just stay put so you don't get motion sickness. AKA just like the theater thing, but it taking up more of your FoV and no model of a theater. Easy, simple effective 3D movie watching. That will blow normal 3D movie watching out of the water. Could just have it so whever there is a video playing or whatever it switches to that "theater" mode where it just plays the video on a large 2D plane in front of you, and if its 3D compatable then it would work with that.
I remember this video of a 360 rotatable camera controllable by you on a truck going through Haiti after the earthquake. Imagine combining something like this (maybe even in a movie) with the Rift and being able to look around and almost be there

That would be fantastic.
I'd love to see that Alien Isolation be able to use the rift.

Kingdom Come kickstarter is up. http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1294225970/kingdom-come-deliverance As they say in the FAQ, it's built on Cryengine so it supports the Rift by default. If I had just one game to play on the Rift, this would be it.
I hope Next Car Game gets rift support. Would fit it so well.
Holy shit, i didn't actually expect i'd get to try an Oculus Rift today, whilst going to Denmark's largest education fair/show thing!
cryengine has native rift support? did not know that [editline]22nd January 2014[/editline]
Holy shit, i didn't actually expect i'd get to try an Oculus Rift today, whilst going to Denmark's largest education fair/show thing!
devkit? what did you think?
Holy shit, i didn't actually expect i'd get to try an Oculus Rift today, whilst going to Denmark's largest education fair/show thing!
Heh, my school had one on of Stockholm's Education Expo. It was one of the major factors to people coming to our booth tho. Sadly I was sick at the day but I won't be as hyped until I get the CV1 :D

It was in Älvsjömässan last year, right?
devkit? what did you think?
I was actually slighty dissapointed, and suddenly glad i never spent money on the dev kit! I think it's definitely worth waiting for the final thing.
I was actually slighty dissapointed, and suddenly glad i never spent money on the dev kit! I think it's definitely worth waiting for the final thing.
That was my first impression too. It wasn't even the screendoor effect that got me disappointed, more or less the fact that the devkit FoV is so very small on top of the low resolution, and the games I tried it out with weren't very well made for VR and/or didn't have a lot of stereoscopic depth. I could quickly see the appeal though. I'm super excited for the consumer version because I literally can't imagine what it will be like to play on a rift that has an actual high FoV, no screendoor, and higher resolution. Especially with games that are actually properly made for it (I just tried it on a hacked copy of Doom3 and it was pretty crappy - abysmal depth rendering for the 3D effect, the gun just followed where I looked, bad HUD support, etc). Portal 2 worked MUCH better but couldn't really spend a lot of time with it so it was hard to really get a feel for it. I imagine the rift dev kit actually has its magic work better if you play the right demos and games that were properly designed for it. Still doesn't get around the low FoV though.
I'm seriously considering getting a dev kit, but the second HD iteration seems so close. Palmer is very tight lipped and won't even comment on 2014, so I'm torn.

Holy shit I just realized, the Rift and driving / flying games with a steering wheel / joystick is going to be fucking awesome. Imagine being fully immersed, first person in say, Forza (a game that looks fucking great as it is), with a Rift and head tracking capabilities to be able to look around the car. Racing games are going to be something else

Palmer is very tight lipped and won't even comment on 2014, so I'm torn.
Its like you didn't read the above two posts at all If you get the current dev kit and don't plan on developing with it, you'll be very VERY disappointed. With the low FoV it doesn't even feel like true VR at all, even assuming you do everything else to not pull you out (play only well made for VR demos/games, never move your head quickly, not focus on the screen door or not care about the low resolution, etc.)
At this point I'd advice everyone but developers to hold back. You'll only hear about the new Rift iterations from this point forward, so the experience you'll get out of the original dev kit won't quite compare.
valve get rekt Seriously though, this is great news.
