Is cv1 still slated for second half 2014?
At this point I feel like we'll be lucky to get it by late 2015, especailly since Valve was pretty much not expecting anything out of VR this year
Who knows though. I thought originally they wanted CV1 out late last year but obviously that didn't work out. As time goes on they keep pushing their standards up more and more which means its going to get pushed back even farther. Even once they settle on a prototype and call it finished, they'll still have to spend a rather long time figuring out how to turn that prototype into an actual consumer version, complete with branding, design, cutting out things to reduce the price, advertising for shelf space, production, establishing production contracts, etc.
That said, they might release Dev Kit v2 the moment they finalize a prototype so at least we could look forward to those. I'm pretty sure at this point though, its likely the dev kits (at the very least) will be more expensive than the current ones, which might cause a bit of backlash against Oculus since the original dev kits were priced at the original ideal price point. There's still some people out there who are expecting that the CV1 will cost the same as the devkit and I think thats really unlikely at this point.

valve get rekt
Seriously though, this is great news.
It wouldn't have anything to do with Valve giving Oculus the tech that they had would it?
Fuck it, getting a dk 1
Fuck it, getting a dk 1
You making a $300 mistake. Just wait for the first consumer version.
It wouldn't have anything to do with Valve giving Oculus the tech that they had would it?
That may very well have something to do with it. I'd be surprised if they weren't taking a good, hard look at their current prototypes and figuring out how to wedge in the Valve stuff.
Still yet, when the next Dev Kit comes out, it'll be a thing of beauty.
I really want to experience this thing, it sucks that the date keeps being pushed back. At the same time, it's awesome because they're constantly making the experience better and I still have never gotten to use a Rift so my first experience is definitely going to be good
Surely including two 1080p amoled screens will increase the price? Also, for people who understand this stuff: with a total resolution of 2080x1920, how much more work will the computer have to do? I know there's some tricks developers can use to use the same render for both eyes but it seems like increasing the resolution would still decrease the framerate. But no matter what, this is great news.

Dude no, stop.
Impatience aint a virtue at all man, just wait for the consumer version.

At least 12 months at last count... plus the Unity Pro 4 month trial is worth $300 anyway.
let him do it, he can always sell it later for possibly even more than he paid
plus he gets to own a piece of VR history

There is no date being set or pushed back. Ever since the dev kit started rolling out, their target for the consumer version has been late 2014. There are no signs from Luckey & co that this has shifted. DK2 is set to release right before CV1, with pretty much the same set of features. No news so far that this plan has changed. Speculate all you want, but I believe Oculus has been quite realistic with managing expectations. Just wait for more news, I imagine the next E3 will be a good moment for their next info dump.

It may become a piece of VR history, but not for a long time.

as said before, i'd buy it if the shipping and tax wasn't up the ass :v:
Haha man it comes to A$422 due to our dollar sinking to A$1 = 0.87 USD.
Including $67 shipping :(
So keen to get into my Unity project in VR...

Oh well if you want to do dev stuff go ahead.

Oops, I just assumed that it was confirmed to be pushed back because there was talk about it.

We are terribly speculatory here. It's important to realize that.
Played Guns of Icarus with my flatmate's rift on her laptop, LAGGY MOTION SICKNESS AHOY
no regrets though, tried portal 1 and skyrim too and both were buggy as hell but fun in their own right :v:
now to try and sleep this off
try a proper VR demo too
try a proper VR demo too
Did a few of the rollercoasters which were really good, Dumpy the elephant and that one where you walk around the house. looking up at the rafters was cool in that one

I don't know but you might have something here, my dad found a game boy pocket from 1996 they were supposed to give me for my birthday, and when he gave it to me the other day I found out the 39.99 price tag on it has jumped up to at least 250. Only because it's unused, in the box, and still taped up with the original Nintendo security tape. Imagine an unopened and unused DK-1 Rift, that would be a neat piece in 30+ years, but pointless for the near future.
I doubt you could make much profit now that the whole order surge is over, but back when people were still feverishly refreshing the Rift order tracker and the Oculus sub-reddit (I might be talking about myself), if you had DK you could make tidy profit by selling it on ebay. People were selling them for like 600-800 dollars.
I actually wish I had anticipated that and bought 2. Would have nearly paid for the first one.
There’s more and more talk about VR as a serious leap forward in videogame development, but right now that conversation and much of the excitement is among game developers themselves. In 2014 it’ll truly ‘arrive’, says Gamble: “There are games in development that are going to rely on it being in the market this year so if it’s not, they’ll be in trouble,” he jokes.
VR-AAA titles incoming.
It'll be interesting to see how fast those VR-AAA titles break even. The market doesn't exist yet and nobody knows how fast it'll grow. The Rift is still a fairly expensive piece of hardware, even at $300. Plus you need a good PC to run the games on. I don't expect it'll be like the mobile app market, where people made a killing in the early days. But it could be. Who knows.
All I want is CV1 this year at least. But the one who waits for something good never waits for too long I guess.
The CV1 will be cheap as hell in a few years anyway so the less fortunate will be able to experience VR too even with "newer" models on the future market. You can buy the older smartphones for under $100 nowadays.
$300-350 for the CV1 as it releases isn't that bad though. I know people who aren't exactly rich and yet own galaxy S4s and shit. They just have to make the CV1 something the consumer wants to invest in.

And unlike smartphones, your performance will increase relative to the newer models due to running at a lower resolution.
The Global Game Jam is wrapping up so there are several interesting little Rift games in the wild again:
