I'm going to GDC this year. Hopefully I'll have the patience to stand in line for ever and try whatever they have to show. :v:
There's nothing like a nicely padded wheelchair to wait in line with!
I tried the first devkit at a store yesterday. Dear god the screendoor effect is super visible. I'm glad I didn't buy the devkit and just preordered the consumer version.[..]
I hope you meant mentally pre-ordered, because real pre-orders aren't available yet. Or you got scammed.
I hope you meant mentally pre-ordered, because real pre-orders aren't available yet. Or you got scammed.
some retailers are taking 'preorders' for CV1 rifts somehow
some retailers are taking 'preorders' for CV1 rifts somehow
its basically just a reservation for when they get them in stock, you dont pay anything until they send it to you
oh fucksticks i wish I was going to GDC... can't afford the flights :(
Nevermind the flights to be able to attend any panels or most of what GDC offers you need to pay close to $1000 for a pass Though if you just want expo floor access (likely where the OR will be) then I guess its only $200, $75 if you get a student day pass for friday only (arguably only worth going then if you are visiting SF on vacation in general or local). [editline]20th February 2014[/editline] That said I can't wait till I graduate and can just start working more hours at my part time job to afford stuff like GDC.
Is there any news on what's happening in two month? I might have heard old news which might be different now?
its basically just a reservation for when they get them in stock, you dont pay anything until they send it to you
Yeah, I went through the "Ha you got scammed" the last time I mentioned this. It's just a reservation, I pay when/if I go get it when it arrives at the store. If I can get it from somewhere sooner, I just cancel the preorder I have now. I did it this soon because I hesitated with the PS4 and waited additional 3 months because of that, when people who did it like I did now got them the day it was released in Europe.
http://www.computerandvideogames.com/450530/ps4-virtual-reality-headset-set-for-gdc-reveal-report-claims/
Sony's PlayStation 4 virtual reality headset will be revealed for the first time at the Games Developers Conference in March, according to a new report. A purported "inside source" has told TechRadar that the Oculus Rift-like device will be shown to third-party developers for the first time at the GDC event in San Francisco.
Well, if it's an actual competitor to the Rift, then I'm interested. If it's a HMD with Rift features... then they're fucked, especially if it's $500+.

Sony may not sell well to core gamers who have been following the Rift from the start but Oculus might struggle with the general public if they have big name competition, regardless of price tags.

Also a big chunk of capital for a startup company.
Oculus won't struggle they have a big enough fan base. Also a big chunk of capital for a startup company.
Honestly, all they need to do is have demo units in every Gamestop in America. That would solidify Oculus as THE brand for VR gaming.
http://www.gamefront.com/oculus-vr-files-trademark-for-riftcon/ Oculus trademarks "RiftCon" for future VR events.
PrioVR: Suit up, game on. Looks like an awesome addition to the VR scene. It's a motion and gesture sensing suit with some controllers in the hand for controls. They already passed their Kickstarter goal with 35 days to go.

You should send that idea to their official Twitter accout or something. Maybe they'll strike a deal or something.
If I'm not mistaken this is their second attempt from kickstarter? anywho 400 dollars for a full motion capture isn't bad.
+Virtuix Omni (with kinect? what does it use) +Oculus Rift +PC able to handle all this shit +rig to take care of the Rift's cables so you can turn more freely +all the pussy youll be getting with a full VR rig in your living room [editline]24th February 2014[/editline] i need more money man
Meh, feels like i've lost all the hype by now. Probably gonna get it when it comes out but still - took too long.
Meh, feels like i've lost all the hype by now. Oh, ye of little faith... Anyway, wait for GDC.
Meh, feels like i've lost all the hype by now. Probably gonna get it when it comes out but still - took too long.
That is the stupidest thing i've read for about 20 pages. IT'S DEVELOPMENT OF NEW TECH! how could it take less time, and why does it matter, is there something better?
hook my hype to a motor and you get perpetual motion and free energy I can't not be hyped for this, it's all so cool man
(with kinect? what does it use)
RGB camera + IR camera + IR emitter array The emitter is off to the side so the camera can detect depth better, the RGB camera is for comparing the IR view to make depth detection more precise. Semi-related: There's also 4 microphones inside. 2 on either side, but placed asymmetrically. Xbox One version works similarly, but apparently it's supposed to be sensitive enough to detect a heartbeat, can see individual fingers, can tell which direction each body part is facing, and calculate weight distribution.

I'll be hyped for this shit 20 years after it's old hat
Is there any good Rift development forums? I'm doing a final year project using the rift and will probably need a lot of help
AFAIK it doesn't detect a heartbeat but it can extrapolate their heart rate based on the degree of flushness in the face which apparently, with IR, is enough to see our heart rates.
So... it detects the heartbeat
So... it detects the heartbeat
it infers heart rate
Semantics.
