Refresh rate and input lag are very important, but rarely "big advertised".
That'll change with VR, though. Maybe not quite to the extent of "NOW WITH ENHANCED REFRESH RATE!", but it'll change. You've got to advertise that you'll be able to get around simulation sickness, which I wager most of these headsets won't be able to do.
So this kickstarter for a virtual tabletop games got the rift stretch goal. If the game is completed by the time rift consumer comes out you'll have a casual multiplay game to play with other vr players. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/274930865/tabletop-simulator?ref=banner

is that the one that's a mod of wolfire's tabletop game base, gathering unnecessary thousands of dollars out of wolfire's generosity
is that the one that's a mod of wolfire's tabletop game base, gathering unnecessary thousands of dollars out of wolfire's generosity
My understanding was that, while it replicated the general concept of Wolfire's game, it wasn't built on the same codebase. It's a new work, it just behaves similarly to an old one. But, what the hey, it's been a while since we've had a good hate bandwagon for no good reason.

I asked a question based on an earlier post in the thread. [editline]11th March 2014[/editline] so chill your bones [editline]11th March 2014[/editline] looked it up, and you're right [editline]11th March 2014[/editline] While i'd love to play some VR chess and tableflip virtual gameboards, the problem is needing good non-spazzy finger tracking gloves (so not kinect or other camera based solutions). All this VR hardware costs around the price of the Rift, with the high chance of very few games supporting such unique Rift accessories. Makes me wary of these extras. Do you think its feasible to solar power simple quarter sized positional transmitters? A few of those, given the tech to be decently accurate for tabletop games, could be configured as knees or finger joints by a user. Even a watch type battery, so long as it lasted for a long time. [editline]11th March 2014[/editline] I can totally see people buying identical chess boards and configuring the virtual one to the right size to have the physical feedback of grabbing pieces.
Just watched a movie with the Riftmax Theater. Couldn't see other people's movies, but watched one in my own theater. It's like Gmod Theater.
https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/1523379957/oculus-rift-step-into-the-game/posts/773595 Oculus hired Atman Binstock as Chief Architect, he was one of the lead engineers behind Valve's VR project.
Who was bandwagoning? I asked a question based on an earlier post in the thread. [editline]11th March 2014[/editline] so chill your bones
I was more referring to the fact that the official thread about it was filled with people saying "Fuck these guys, they stole Wolfire's game," and other such hateful crap. I just thought you were jumping on that bandwagon. My apologies.

Notch visited the Oculus studios and tried out their newest secret prototypes. https://twitter.com/notch/status/443461570195378177
Yeah, I need to get back into oculus rift development. These are passionate people, and they're changing the gaming world. :D
someone make a $5,000 robot that weilds a sword so i can have online sword fights

The booth size at GDC is 6 times bigger for Oculus this time than last year.
occolus of now big ;D
Haha yeah, fuck you Xsolla
"Lets see what comes of it" Probably more vacations
That's a good joke. (Seriously, he hasn't done anything for two years.)
i wonder if it would be possible to make a full body suit that restricts and inhibits movement according to what's happening in the virtual world.
i wonder if it would be possible to make a full body suit that restricts and inhibits movement according to what's happening in the virtual world.
holy shit are you me?
Or something that reads brainwaves for body movement, then induces something similar to sleep paralysis
i wonder if it would be possible to make a full body suit that restricts and inhibits movement according to what's happening in the virtual world.
Hopefully it doesn't go far enough to force movement. Get your neck twisted in game, get it in real life.
Hopefully it doesn't go far enough to force movement. Get your neck twisted in game, get it in real life.
I'm sure one could figure out a purely mechanical system to just stop or make movement harder without giving the rig mobility Though you could probably also think up some hard restraints so that even if you do have enforced movement it wouldn't ever be able to move past a certain point.

It's a hard problem to solve. Also, GDC is going to be really interesting if the rumours about Sony's VR entry are anything to go on.
http://www.engadget.com/2014/03/13/immersive-technology-alliance/ Oculus, EA, Panasonic, Avengant, CastAR, Virtuix, YEI technology, and many others band together to form the "Immersive Technology Alliance". They will hold their first meeting at GDC next week. Pretty cool to see Panasonic on there, maybe they're the guys supplying Oculus with prototype screens?
San Francisco, CA. (Mar 13, 2014) – Originally founded in 2009, The Stereoscopic 3D Gaming Alliance has been formally renamed the The Immersive Technology Alliance (The ITA) and has an expanded mandate to effectively meet the needs of the newly established Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), stereoscopic 3D and gesture industries. With special thanks to The Khronos Group and The PC Gaming Alliance (PCGA), The Immersive Technology Alliance is being launched at Game Developers Conference in a private session on March 18, 2014 at 9:15AM. The alliance features such names as Oculus VR, Technical Illusions, Electronic Arts, Epson, Virtuix, I'm in VR, Nanoveu, Gameface Labs, Vrelia, The University of Ontario Institute of Technology, Panasonic, Avegant, YEI Technology, and countless more. Meeting attendees will see exclusive presentations from Technical Illusions, The Game Creators, Survios, YEI Technology, I'm in VR, Epson, and more! Exciting tech demos will be on-hand as well. Jeri Ellsworth, President and Co-Founder of Technical Illusions, commented, "In this rapidly expanding industry of augmented and virtual reality displays, and other immersive technologies, great communication and collaboration among technology leaders is valuable. We're proud to participate in The ITA as a founding member, and contribute our thought leadership to the group. We are revolutionizing the way people interact with and display their digital graphics, and we look forward to working with the alliance to bring more awareness to immersive products like castAR." The goal of the alliance is to foster a vibrant and diverse industry that content makers can support on a wide scale. Accomplishing this goal requires commercial success, industry diversity, great content, compatibility, and a growing consumer base through joint education and outreach. "Our team of experts has been developing VR for many years, and are committed to extending immersive technologies to a wide audience. Our MiddleVR plug-in lets developers create VR content on any system, from consumer to high-end. We are bringing the ITA our experience and energy to help drive this industry on a wide scale," said Sebastien Kuntz, CEO of I'm in VR. "With the lines blurring between PC and mobile, organizations like the Khronos Group and PCGA are growing increasingly important. The launch of the ITA is just another example of their positive influence," said Neil Schneider, Executive Director, The ITA.
http://www.ita3d.com/
vurtual reality is awlways GROW :)) But seriously, I'm loving the direction this is all headed in. My piggybank is beyond excited for whenever this tech starts growing ripe.
