Low persistence, high FPS and resolution confirmed
"To achieve sight we need a high res, high framerate, low-persistence display. Luckily we have a lot of experience in this field."
On a semi-related note, I saw someone outside the GDC expo hall wearing a white VR headset of some sort while being handed an xbox 360 controller.
Curiously, there were no wires connected to the headset.
Binaural audio confirmed
"In VR having spacialized sound is really important. You really use the directionality of sound to filter what's important and what's not. We developer some binaural tech inside SCEA"
"Our current dev kit: 1080p display. 90+ FoV"
"Positional and rotational head tracking. 1000hz, 3 meter working volume. Full 360 degrees. Supports forward prediction. DS4 and PS Move with the same camera."
Any news on a price?
I bet when CV1 comes out, and Sony's HMD is out, sony's is gonna be $500 while the Rift will stay at the cozy $300
Oh boy, here we go.

You know, I see all this advancement in graphics, but I hope that we can see advancement in sound reproduction, with VR being the main driver. Most games merely sound "good enough" in headphone/binural mode. I would like to see some more focus being made towards making sound more realistic.
EVE Valkyrie and Thief confirmed as demos for the Morpheus - so Valkyrie is not only for the Rift!
EVE Valkyrie and Thief confirmed as demos for the Morpheus - so Valkyrie is not only for the Rift!
Didn't Thief also have certain config settings that pointed towards there being Oculus Rift demos?

Honestly, Sony's no stranger to taking a loss on products. The PS4's actually reasonably profitable for them, it wouldn't surprise me if they sold these at a decent loss to pick up the slack. Hardware's not supposed to be profitable anyway, it's the software that powers it that you make money on.
(Hey, it looks like it uses one display and the same focusing system that the Rift does... I wonder if they did that for ease of development, so Devs wouldn't have to code for two different VR standards?)
And now oculus' lead feet might seriously bite them in the ass
Especially if the sony hmd uses the oculus sdk (I assume it is open but might be wrong. Would suck for devs to have to target every hmd on the market)
I'm happy to see Sony releasing a game based HMD, hope Microsoft does something too.. If all three major "game stations" have some kind of HMD more and bigger game developers might be more interested in supporting it.
Anyhow; what do we expect to learn from Oculus under GDC? any interesting rumors? been living under a rock when it comes to virtual reality a while.
^If an hmd uses hdmi and usb I dont see why it wouldn't work on any console
^If an hmd uses hdmi and usb I dont see why it wouldn't work on any console
That won't matter though because both consoles are going to be trying to sell their own hmd and won't allow a third party hmd to work on their systems.
Why do people have to be so negative and condescending? I've looked at a few of the threads about this, and it's just people railing against it (and being very blatantly wrong while doing so...)
This is a good thing. It means VR might actually go somewhere. Soon. Why don't they see that?

It's like back in the fifties with rock music and old people.
Binaural audio confirmed
Isn't binaural audio a recording method rather than a playback method though?

Not necessarily.

I gotta admit, the addition of binaural audio just made my choice a little harder. Just depends on how much it costs.
I would've thought binaural audio would be a software problem, not dependent on which HMD you choose. Isn't it up to video game makers whether or not they implement it? And shouldn't it work on basically any headphones?
is project morpheus going to work on PC?
Probably not.
Well, I don't see why they would limit it. If it works with PC, then Sony just opened themselves up for another userbase. Kinda like the Dualshock 4 having PC Support.
I am waiting for VR headsets since I first saw something about it in a 1998 magazine. I read a lot of comments about VR and I can't believe that even younger generations (that generally are excited about new stuff) call this a gimmick and that will die out like 3D TVs.
well if it's not on PC then it's not really even competing with the Rift is it, so no worries there
Oh cool, you can pre-order the DK2 form their website now, estimated to ship in July.

A few seconds ago I had this big realization that I really don't give a shit who prevails in the VR market, more companies getting involved in it means that there is going to be a lot of competition that's going to come out with a great product. I feel like Oculus are the good guys and the underdogs and that they should definitely get the credit they deserve but even if they don't we're still going to have awesome HMD's

fuckers pricing it without VAT, goddamn

also, here are the DK2 specs finalised:

Yeah, I'm still going to wait for CV1 since I'm not a developer but damn its hard not buying the DK2.
