Sony's version better be compatible with Rift compatible games and vice versa or there will be a huge mess.
Sony's version better be compatible with Rift compatible games and vice versa or there will be a huge mess.
I only saw one piece where a cam will be used for tracking. having a camera to track points is right now is a major important piece to get right.
I got to try out the rift DK2 here at GDC. I was zooming through space in EVE valkyrie and I didn't get motion sick at all. It was amazing.
I need to play valkyrie so bad
I need to play valkyrie so bad
It's pretty cool but it ended way fast. Probably only for demo purposes though.
Sony's version better be compatible with Rift compatible games and vice versa or there will be a huge mess.
The technical side seems straightforward, so unless Sony messes up their API somehow I don't expect it'll be a big challenge for game devs to support multiple HMDs. In the end it's just a few different parameters, fundamentally they seem towork the same way. On another note, glad to see this question answered on the Oculus FAQ:
Q: I’ve been developing my VR content for the original Oculus Rift Development Kit. Will my VR projects be compatible with the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2? A: Yes, your VR content developed with the original Oculus Rift Development Kit is compatible with the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2. You may need to make some changes to your content to take advantage of the new features of the Oculus Rift Development Kit 2. If you view your modified project in the original Oculus Rift Development Kit, it can be viewed at a lower resolution and positional tracking will be switched off.
At least my demo library won't become redundant instantly (although I hope to see versions implementing 6-DOF tracking soon).
Non-Oculus but still relevant news: Unreal Engine 4 business plan is a $19 month subscription and 5% royalties on gross sales. You'll get the complete source code via GitHub in exchange. Very attractive.
That's a quarter of unity's price, but unity doesn't have royalties. $19 is already cheap but I wonder if they'll have a discount for students?
Morpheus is apparently targeting a price of $249-299 which seems reasonable considering you need a PS4 first.
It's pretty cool but it ended way fast. Probably only for demo purposes though.
I'd imagine there's a consistently large line to get at it
1 pixel in DK1 = 3½ pixels in DK2
Also apparently pixels in DK2 aren't square shaped so there's that too
Also apparently pixels in DK2 aren't square shaped so there's that too
I'm reading that it'll be using a pentile display? So something like this?
And pentile displays look awful.
And pentile displays look awful.
My dad has a note 3 and the screen looks amazing even when I'm trying to magnify it. I don't understand why you're saying that it looks awful.
Reports say it looks very good in the DK2. Also, the DK2 will include Carmack's "time warp" technology, meaning you can have games running at 30fps but it won't cause any nausea whatsoever. So higher graphics games will be possible.

I just found a little issue. My HD7950 has a HDMI 1.4a port. I can't seem to find a solid source on whether HDMI 1.4a has enough bandwidth for 1080p at 75hz. HDMI 1.4b was developed to allow for 1080p at 120hz. Edit: lol wtf, when I google "hdmi 1.4a 1080p 75hz" this very post is the 2nd result. Google works fast.
How about these then: [t]http://www.androidcentral.com/sites/androidcentral.com/files/styles/large/public/postimages/108579/note2-s3-rgb-pentile.jpg?itok=6xST9UyM[/t] [t]http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y56/sniffs/dxvsatrix1.png[/t] [t]http://st.gsmarena.com/vv/reviewsimg/720p-screen-shootout/display/gsmarena_011.jpg[/t] [t]http://www.mobiletechworld.com/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/2010/06/Super-AMOLED-vs-Retina-Display-4.jpg[/t] [t]http://www.droid-life.com/wp-content/uploads/2011/05/DX2-DX-NS-SCREENS.jpg[/t]

The colors are off though, I have my S3 in front of me right now and it's blazing white instead of that murky green/blue.
Eh, we'll see how it goes, right? It might look different behind the lenses. Comparing the displays themselves just isn't going to give you the same effect as seeing them in the Rift.
I had some moderate buyer's remorse when I found out how bad it was in practice on my droid bionic. The default background was black+red junk with lots of small details, and it flickered like all hell when you'd slide screens. It wasn't deal breakingly noticeable in 99% of my usage but when dumb situations like that turned up it was aggrivating density/distortion/gap fill may negate it entirely on this nice new screen but I'm still as skeptical as any

I mean, there's got to be some reason why they chose it, right?
Are we sure it's gonna be Pentile like the phone screens shown, or is going to go more the route of the Galaxy S4?: Which I think looks damn good even when magnified.

The Tested guys mentioned the pixels looked hexagonal. [editline]19th March 2014[/editline] Initial impressions from a lucky dude that got to try both Sony's Morpheus and Oculus' DK2 today: http://www.reddit.com/r/oculus/comments/20tyrn/project_morpheus_gdc_impressions/cg6t877
Tried both today, my early impressions: Morpheus Heavier that DK2 and put some pressure on the top of your head and a bit on your nose, almost no screen door effect, if you really focus on some area instead you see a little bit of the sub-pixels, looked like a pentile screen for me. I'm not sure about the resolution but it felt more natural than DK2, you can't see the pixel squares but it also doesn't seems high resolution, they did a good job in this area. FOV was smaller than DK2, but not by much, looked like when you use a B or C cup with the DK1. Head tracking was ok, but higher latency than DK2. It was a stand up experience and I could take one step and each direction and still be in the camera view. Looking from outside the lens were quite big, and for some reason the shape looked like fresnel lens, but not sure about that. Audio wasn't loud enough and I didn't feel any binaural effect at all. DK2 Screen door effect still present, but far better that DK1. Resolution seems to be par with Morpheus however I could see the "shape" of the pixels more than the Sony counterpart. Latency and head tracking seems to be way better than Sony, however Sony seems to have a larger tracking volume (not sure if the camera can be positioned far away), both demos were seated and even this way it was not hard to get outside the tracking range. Conclusion I would prefer for DK2 instead of Sony, because even with the more apparent pixels, the latency and head tracking precision gave me more sense of presence than Morpheus. But both are awesome!

I wonder if that's more to do with the Bionic being a notoriously bad phone rather than the screen itself. I mean, there's got to be some reason why they chose it, right?
it was specifically about the screen, given I'm a very finnicky visual person as a photographer/designer/artist. The phone otherwise performed admirably since I bought it at launch, and only recently has it frozen up hardcore. I'm hoping to fix it and tear it apart to use for something like mounting a data display in my car or something
On a semi-related note, I saw someone outside the GDC expo hall wearing a white VR headset of some sort while being handed an xbox 360 controller. Curiously, there were no wires connected to the headset.
any more details?

However if CV1 does 1440p at 90hz, it won't be enough. It'll need to move to display port or HDMI 2.0.

http://www.cryengine.com/news/crytek-announces-its-cryengine-as-a-service-program CryEngine moves to a $10 subscription model... without royalties. Your move Unity.
Ooh, this is a good point... Any idea what the 560Ti has? EDIT: Found it. I'm running 1.4a too. Crap.
Where can you find the HDMI info? I'm using a 660Ti and I really hope I can smoothly run things with the Rift.
Any hands-on reviews of the Sony prototype ?
