What if they rename it Facerift The Japanese are going to be confused
What if they rename it Facerift The Japanese are going to be confused
You know, Facebook knows all about... Face. I say they call it the FaceFace. EDIT: Here are some promises Oculus made after the merger: http://time.com/38366/here-are-7-promises-oculus-has-made-after-getting-bought-by-facebook/ If they hold to them, then nothing's changed. Heck, moving into other fields might help with the long-term viability of the Rift.
Well, my optimism is remaining 110%. Bring on the future. If the support and funds that Facebook gave them helps the CV1 to be cheaper (As stated by Luckey before) and they are being allowed to continue on as if nothing else has happened, then bring it on.

On one hand, Facebook's gutted a fair few companies before... But not recently. On the other, Oculus now has two BILLION dollars for R&D and manufacturing, which means the product will be even better now... And they've got the full support of Facebook on the software side, which means the headset will be used for more than just games. It's got potential to become a true revolutionary device in every aspect of life, which is super exciting. You just know there will be Rift museums, architectures, entire worlds built for exploration and education. That's really cool, and something they couldn't have done easily without a solid partner. Sure, there'll probably be some Facebook shovelware, like FarmVille VR, but we don't judge Steam for its crap. As long as the platform has developer support, Facebook can be a huge boon to the more social experiences without shifting focus.

I've heard a lot of people throwing that around but no one giving any examples.

Talent acquisitions, tech acquisitions, that sort of thing. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_mergers_and_acquisitions_by_Facebook The difference is that Oculus is not a $200k/yr start-up. That's why they were purchased for $2Bn. (And yes, Facebook stock is worth something. It's not plummeting, it's actually fairly stable in the day-trades market.)

Seriously, even if you read into this news just a little bit you would understand that this isn't that bad.
Honestly, the odds of this being successful are just too damn high. Facebook has no reason to destroy Oculus or the Rift, and they've got so much to gain by just leaving them alone. Their goals align, almost to a point. Sure, they're no longer exactly 100% indie, but they haven't been since they started getting massive investments from major players. You've got a bunch of people who hate Facebook for... a lot of the same reasons Facebook is losing popularity (read: 18-21 year olds, probably college students or below) being upset because they don't actually control the direction of a company that gave money to with no obligations... It's insane. I wish they had honestly just not said anything, and Facebook kept it under wraps until right before the CV1 launch.
Half of reddit is idiots, confirmed.
you needed a poll to realise this?
All I know is that the Oculus Rift was mentioned and even demo'd quite a few times on Dutch television today. People want to know what it is because Facebook put their name on it.
Does oculus now have the resources to get a 4K RGB OLED panel?
Everyone who pre-ordered DK2 and is furious at Oculus should cancel their preorder immediately and get others who feel the same to follow suit. [sp]Helps me get my own sooner.[/sp] Otherwise, let's see how things play out. It's too early to say, and these guys have earned a little faith. I'm excited to hear what new paths have opened up by this.
Does oculus now have the resources to get a 4K RGB OLED panel?
Yes. I'd wager they'll go Retina-level before they go 4K, though. I'm not sure 7" 4K panels are a thing yet. [editline]26th March 2014[/editline]
I'm aware of the acquisitions, the biggest ones I can see on that list are Instagram and WhatsApp. As far as I know they are still going perfectly fine, which are the ones which have been gutted and ruined like so many people are claiming?
Pretty much everything aside from Instagram, Whatsapp, and Oculus. The product wasn't ruined, though. Just dismantled and incorporated into the Facebook infrastructure. And that's because they bought a bunch of dime-a-dozen $3-400k tech startups with people or patents that Facebook wanted. That sort of thing happens all the time in Silicon Valley. Oculus is a lot more like Instagram than any of the others, though. It's a massive company (in terms of product innovation) with a massive valuing (in terms of potential value), and no reason to change the product beyond maybe some software integration. That's why I'm sure they'll be fine.
During CES this January, Palmer and Nate answered a few Reddit questions. The last one was "what would you do with an unlimited budget?": https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1NwG7OkREOQ#t=10m2s
Does oculus now have the resources to get a 4K RGB OLED panel?
No.
Does oculus now have the resources to get a 4K RGB OLED panel?
Not a smart move. That would be out of the reach of most consumers, and they don't want the Rift to be an Enthusiast device; they want this to be as accessible as possible.
This gamasutra article aligns almost completely with my views on the issue: http://gamasutra.com/blogs/EMcNeill/20140326/213904/Oculus__Facebook_Probably_Not_So_Bad_So_Maybe_You_Could_Stop_Freaking_Out_About_It.php Glad to see people calming down.
Both 1080p and 720p can be displayed on a 4k panel with perfect scaling.
He means small 4K panels do not exist and creating one would cost a bajillion dollars to produce.

We'll all have forgotten about this next week, and Oculus will go back to putting out regular updates, and the world will keep spinning. It's not Christie's Bridge, after all.
1080p (and 720p) can be displayed on a 4k panel with perfect scaling.
This would still be ridiculously expensive.
"According to a person involved in the deal who was not allowed to speak publicly because he was not authorized by either company, Facebook eventually plans to redesign the Oculus hardware and rebrand it with a Facebook interface and logo."
http://www.slashgear.com/oculus-vr-facebook-rebranding-tipped-new-interface-and-logo-26322238/ RIP but then plot-twist http://techcrunch.com/2014/03/26/facebook-oculus/
He means small 4K panels do not exist and creating one would cost a bajillion dollars to produce.
I've heard about 4K panels at 9.6".
oh please, how many times will that baseless rumor get posted here but atleast oculus finally put a stop to it
but.... we cant trust facebook! they're obviously lying! i dont need to prove this. high five bro, am i right! fuck fuckerberg, haha!
There exists a 4K panel at 9.6".
Which is far too big.
Aren't consumer targeted 4K monitors still costing thousands of dollars? I feel like we've thoroughly covered that 4K is a non-starter, cool as it would be.
Aren't consumer targeted 4K monitors still costing thousands of dollars? I feel like we've thoroughly covered that 4K is a non-starter, cool as it would be.
4K is a pipe dream that isn't gonna happen in a HMD for years.
