For CV1, though? Unlikely.

Nvidia is already talking about 5k...

does anybody ever learn from this shit journalism style? Kotaku pumps out so much "we have an insider who knows everything that's happening but they wish to remain anonymous" shit that it became a bannable to post those articles during the early announcement days of the XB1/PS4
Seems like everything's calmed down a bit, but now there's one group that sticks out like a sore thumb: the people who seem like they desperately want OR to fail now, just because they're owned by Facebook. Not even making up excuses, just a very negative "wait and see!"

Or the guys claiming "ok, in short term nothing is changed. But long term Oculus is ruined".
If you're so good at long term forecasts, you should go to Wall Street. Or become a Weatherman.

Except there's a well-maintained mod for it, so nothing of value is lost.

Reddit calmed down pretty quickly this time.
r/Fallout was still going on about TheSurvivor2299 long after it was revealed to be fake.
[editline]26th March 2014[/editline]
So other than the people now wanting the OR to die and Notch being childish over it, does the Rift train still seem to be on track?

Pretty much. I don't know about you, but I think this is great for both potential software and Oculus as a brand.
Facebook knows social. It's what they do. If they don't make a Matrix, I'll be gravely disappointed.
I hope they buy Second Life so I can suck hedgehock dick with my FB friends
All I care about is CV1, and as long as I get it, I'll be happy.
Uh... Guys, I just ran some numbers, and this is really interesting...
Oculus was given $1.6Bn in Facebook PO. That equates to 23,529,411 shares at $68 a share when the acquisition was announced.
Today, Facebook stock is trading at $60 a share, which has reduced the value of those 23,529,411 shares to $1,411,764,705.
Oculus has lost (roughly) $200Mn in stock value since the acquisition was announced.
That's got to hurt.

more reason for both of them to develop a good product and get the cash they deserve imo
Does anyone know if they are using DK2 at PAX east?
I'm not sure you understand what an acquisition is nor do you have a single shred of evidence other than the current "oh no they're evil and going to drive it into the ground intentionally :(" bullshit rumormongering
Yeah I have no idea what acquisitions are. Clearly every company that acquires another doesnt do it to make their money back. My bad
Yeah I have no idea what acquisitions are. Clearly every company that acquires another doesnt do it to make their money back. My bad
They do, but they're not doing it in the mafia-esque way you expect.
Acquiring a company, and then using that company to make a successful product provides income in two ways. It raises their stock, and it opens a revenue stream in the consumer market.
Running the product into the ground reduces the likelihood that you'll get that revenue stream from the consumer market, and your stock will plummet. You can write it off, but you'll never make back what you paid.
And if they're not making back the money at a reasonable rate, management doesn't come down and threaten to break their kneecaps for it. They just try to find ways to make it more profitable, like changing parts suppliers or manufacturers. (This actually happens more often than tweaking the product itself. That involves R&D costs.)
For Facebook, the best route they can take is to do nothing at all. Zuckerberg seems to understand that, why can't you?

Except no. Because all Facebook wants to do, they want to do in Software. There's no reason to change the product at all.
And Zuckerberg has said at least three times, and Luckey and Carmack have all echoed, that he doesn't intend to change the direction of the company. He's taking a hands-off approach, because he sees how the hardware can be used for his platform. However, he can't use that hardware if that hardware doesn't do what it does.
They're selling a screen with gyroscopes and lenses. There's absolutely no reason to change that. I think that's what Zuckerberg sees. He doesn't see a dedicated hardcore gaming device. He sees a screen with lenses. And his two billion dollars is going to go some way to making it the best damn screen with lenses that we've ever seen.
Because that's what's going to make him more money. You don't make the big leagues with tat.

Luckey and Carmack have enough of my trust to warrant me not completely writing off the OR and waiting to be pleasantly surprised if it comes out untainted.
What Facebook sees as making a successful product is what people excited for the OR see as running it into the ground.
It's basically just a fancy monitor for your face, the requirements for social applications and the gaming applications are practically identical. They both need the same sense of presence that Oculus have been aiming for so the product is probably going to be the same as before if not better thanks to the extra money.
Sometimes a corporation might acquire something as a preemptive move. Facebook could have acquired OR so that Google, or some other entity, can't. They might let it run for a few years and then slowly dismantle it. The investment is pocket change for them after all.
So I wouldn't be so quick to assume this deal has any positive implications for this device.

Except that would be completely pointless since there are already other competitors springing up. It would be like entering a race, tackling the guy in first place and then just sitting on his back while everyone else runs past you to the finish anyway, it serves absolutely no purpose.

Actually, he's not known for lying... If anything, he's known for being brutally, unyieldingly honest.
Which is sort of why people hate him.
(A lot of his early quotes, especially from when this was a college project. He's not afraid to speak his mind, but he does follow through.)

Two billion dollars is more than they made last year.
Not exactly pocket change by any metric.
In regards to "pocket-change": fucking no, lol.
If you'd listened through the entire conference call you'd have heard him assuring his investors that buying whatsapp and oculus in such a short timespan is a one in a million occurrence, because both are crucial to the future if FB wants to stay ahead, and that they have no similar purchases planned into the future.
2bn is a huge deal.
And no positive implications for the device?? What??? Besides being able to strive for their long term stretch goals in RnD, and have a secured foothold in production and sales?
