As far as I understand, the most efficient gen designs is as fitting many single-block longest-X/Y/Z separate generators into one small area. It's pretty simple at 5x5. Gets a bit apeshit at 75x75x250.
From my understanding you want as many generators as possible with the largest bounding box possible, hence why I'm doing the 2-long staircase, as no generators are orthogonal to each other. It only requires a few more floors in order for all of the generators to have looped to the opposite side. What I mean by stairs is this: I used a minecraft structure planner for that drawing, and it's only 4 floors obviously. I'll also be adding more smaller generators in the central area.
It is actually, why are people disagreeing? The most efficient gen design is to integrate it with your hull, while the least efficient is something like that block up there that uses dozens of unnecessary blocks that only increase capacity rather than regen.
its 16 12x16x16 gens in a 12x16 area, he should have made it go up one on the corners as well, though
I made a big ship, it salvages things. [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/xBt9hwq.jpg[/thumb] [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/wUmPaKz.png[/thumb] It's got zero offence but 12000 shields (Two stacks of 30) and I can go from 0 to 50 in like, one second and maintain it forever. It's pretty awesome, every salvager cannon is a stack of 30 and I'm too lazy to count how many I have cause fuck you, but I can give you a rough estimate of over 10000. I don't know if I should bother closing the back, right now I kinda like it. Also I can mine an entire planet in under a minute.
120,000 shields is pretty much nothing to most weapons and that 240 recharge rate means that you won't be getting a new shield for a while if you lose the one you have :v: Also, that recharge rate is abysmal, I'm almost surprised you can support that many shields in the first place.
As far as I understand, the most efficient gen designs is as fitting many single-block longest-X/Y/Z separate generators into one small area. It's pretty simple at 5x5. Gets a bit apeshit at 75x75x250.
The best design for a ship generator is to integrate the generator design into the ship's hull itself, then having as many generators run the full dimensions of the ship as possible. And as hard as you think it gets, it really isn't too hard to do when you get to giant sizes like 100x100x100 cubes, it's actually very easy. I once saw one of those max-reactor Borg cubes before. The real challenge is integrating it into the design of a really complexly shaped ship - it's entirely possible. [editline]7th May 2013[/editline] This tiny ship isn't longer than 20 blocks and isn't taller than 10, yet I managed to get over 3.5~million regen out of it when I was done. Thavong generators on the outside like that looks ugly and is easily destroyed if the shields go down. Make that into an attractive ship before trying to flog the design.
i have to say the most fun and rewarding way I've used for making ships not based on an existing design is to put together a neat little skeleton of generators, leaving room for hallways and rooms I'd later need, filling in shields as needed, and then I wrap that all in light yellow hull as tightly as I can without exposing anything, and then armour the fuck out of it all with heavy plating where it feels "right". end up with a functional looking ship that actually looks nice as well [editline]7th May 2013[/editline] i use the underlayer like honeycomb shit, it's nice since when a hole is punched in, I can easily spot it and it makes it look half decent as well. once armour actually means something, I'll be in even more love with the game
I kinda like the new textures, makes the game a bit more atmospheric it seems. Edit: But seriously, the textures can be 56 by 56, why aren't they using that fact, the 'pixels' are 4 by 4 on the textures. Edit 2: Okay, never mind that, I thought these were going to be the old new textures.
Immediately replaced the new textures with the old ones.
Immediately replaced the new textures with the old ones.
I'm going to hold out hope they make them better, these ones cause my left eye to sting some reason. Should I continue my freelancer texture pack since the new ones aren't that good, anyone?
[thumb]http://i.imgur.com/xBt9hwq.jpg[/thumb]
All I could think of.
All I could think of.
I now. Want to make. A One to One scale. Spaceball One ship.
Oh god these new textures are horrible.
How do I save schematics of my ships? I want to update.
-Snip- Nevermind found out how.
Does anybody know the itemID for the new power tanks?
It will be in the block editor, open in via the tools menu in the launcher. I'd do it but I'm on my phone and I've got studying to do.
I really like the new textures, it just bugs me that there is no light grey / white texture anymore. The white hulls really should have the same color as the old grey blocks imo.
the new texture pack would be good if everything wasn't so fucking dark I used to be able to see in my ship pretty clearly, now I can barely see anything because the grey hull block is now an outrageously dark blue for no reason
Finished the nose of the ship. I do like the darker tone of the new textures, however doing that also to the white and grey blocks was just uncalled for. I use those as floor blocks.
Perls server is down. Will it be back online anytime soon? I need my fix.
Hey! Cosmos made a neat server list page which is now under our little starmade-network. http://servers.starmade.rtag.me/ You're encouraged to add your servers so that we have a nice central serverlist. It's a work in progress as we're going to write a probe to gather player counts and other info from the servers as well, but for now it's just a simple server status page. And to the above post, check out the page and see for yourself!
Thavong generators on the outside like that looks ugly and is easily destroyed if the shields go down. So I tried making the Enterprise and so far I got the basic hull finished http://imgur.com/a/kPwxH Not really happy with how some things turned out but I was so far along that I just went it. Also it's made with about 40k+ grey hull so far
Rather than darker textures, we need better dynamic lighting. Space is pretty dark, afterall.
New update! Changelog:
Hello and welcome to StarMade, In this update, two all new beams are introduced: The power supply beam, and the power drain beam. The new beams Power supply beam This beam can be targeted anywhere on another structure. It will transfer power from your ship to the structure. Also, this beam is not stopped by shields. This can be very useful for support type ships. Power drain beam This beam transfers power from the targeted structure to your ship. It ignores shields, but power blocks (recharge or capacity) have to be targeted. In the reight hand this might be a powerful weapon against shields. You could also build your own supply depot from which you can take power if needed. Power Consistency power will no longer need to recharge every time the object is loaded. Structures will now safe the power state when they get unloaded. Fixes - fixed vanishing asteroids - fixed block icons - fixed cluster outage bug (thanks cal): there was a running condition where a segment could be re-loaded and reset before loaded again. the reset caused the cluster collector to notice all removed and then added blocks. The problem was that he didn't have the right order. So it would sometimes remove cluster members after they have been added, even if the add came after the remove logically causing patches of power blocks (or well, just usable blocks in general) not to be included in the calculation at all I think I did some more but forgot to document... Thanks for playing StarMade, - schema
Good luck everyone who made your ship out of power generators!
With this update, he proceeded to not only make shields even more pathetic than they are now, he's also quite literally made cloaking impossible, even for a max-reactor possibly. [editline]7th May 2013[/editline] gj schema
What a bullshit thing to do.. Surely the beam has to hit the generator block directly - not passing through other blocks. [editline]7th May 2013[/editline] I hate this game more with every update
I'm sure he'll fix everything, jeez. This game is so early in dev, he's just trying different things out

Feeling really bad for schema because of the little "hate" he's getting for the latest updates.
Shields are apparently going to be fixed at a later date.
