What is Space Engineers?
Space Engineers is a sandbox game about engineering, construction and maintenance of space works. Players build space ships and space stations of various sizes and utilization (civil and military), pilot ships and perform asteroid mining.
Space Engineers utilizes a realistic volumetric-based physics engine: all objects can be assembled, disassembled, damaged and destroyed.
NOW WITH SURVIVAL!
• Features:
Game modes

WORK IN PROGRESS, NOT YET IMPLEMENTED OR TEMPORARILY DISABLED
Factions – not implemented yet
Sounds – only “arcade mode” is implemented and not all sound effects are final
Character animations - we are working on an enhanced version with more accurate first-person astronaut mode
Many of the 3D models are “concept models” only, with no textures and no polygon optimizations
Conveyor, antenna/radar – not operational yet
Deformations of non-armor blocks are still work-in-progress
Gravity affects astronaut and small objects only (we haven’t decided yet whether gravity should affect ships and asteroids)
Asteroids and space stations are immovable (we haven’t decided yet whether they should move and rotate)
Large weapons (gatling turret, missile turret) - not operational yet
No joystick and Xbox controller support
How much does it cost?
£11.99, €13.99, $14.99

More details
In 2002, Marek Rosa got an idea of making a physics-sandbox game where players construct static and dynamic structures in a grid-like environment, with realistic physics and realistic volumetricity.
This idea was inspired by his childhood days, spent with the popular construction toys of LEGO and LEGO TECHNIC.
Back then the technology wasn’t ready for a full-scale approach, so the first phase of his “master plan” focused only on dynamic voxel terrain. This resulted in our first title, “Miner Wars 2081”.
The second phase is happening right now and is materialized in “Space Engineers”.
Space Engineers is inspired by reality and by how things work. Think about modern-day NASA technology extrapolated 60 years into the future. Space Engineers strives to follow the laws of physics and doesn't use technologies that wouldn't be feasible in the near future.
To be honest, for the sake of intuitive gameplay, we had to make a few sacrifices to “realism elitism” - artificial gravity, max velocity, reactor efficacy, static grid, immovable asteroids, etc.
Space Engineers concentrates on construction aspects, but can be played as a tactical shooter as well. We expect players to avoid engaging in direct man-to-man combat and instead use their creativity and engineering skills to build war machines and fortifications. Space Engineers shouldn’t be about troops; it should be about the machinery you build.
When can I get it?
Space Engineers is in its alpha stage of development and will be available on Steam Early Access on October 23, 2013.
2nd video. 1:46. Actual gravity in ships. Instabuy.
I saw this before, and I was pretty hyped about it then, too.
They plan to add a lot of depth to the game too. Power and o2 and shit. And modding support. Yeah, baby
i approve and want
Amazing concept. Interested in how it's going to work out, I guess we'll find out in 10 days.
I want this fucker so badly.
I can imagine making boarding craft with very strong armor and a spiked shape so that they can puncture an enemy asteroid base or big ship and just take over command. I really hope this game will become something amazing.
ERECTION OVERWHELMING
I cannot wait for the 23rd.

if this is possible ill buy it twice
if this is possible ill buy it twice
ship smashing is in, which is basically 90% of what you require. Now you just need armor which is very tough and some doors so your ship doesn't get fucked up.
It'd be lovely if someone tries to board your ship in a badly made boarding vessel, and you'd just see their ship turn into a pancake against your armor.
[editline]12th October 2013[/editline]
So many cool things can be done with a damage system like this. You can just make custom missiles (kamikaze fighter ships) of varying shapes and sizes.
Design a ship with a long sharp tip that pierces armour, make it so there is a door before the tip and make it long enough so that on average by the time it breaches the other hull the door is exposed. Then you just open up the door and walk right in.
it kind of reminds me of Space Station 13 in the sense that you're relying on your ingenuity to do crazy stuff, like building weirdly specific tools then weaponizing them, or taking on five dudes with nothing but a toolbox and an overly elaborate plan
Already saving money to buy this come the 23rd.
Hopefully not too expensive, I don't think they have announced a price yet, maybe they'll sell cheaper while in development.

On the site it says $15
On the site it says $15
Oh that's nice.
go watch that gravity movie and then come back saying you want space engineers
i'd probably pee my pants and cry if someone rams their ship in to mine and leaves me for stranded in deep space
I want this.
How feasible are fighter type craft?
I'm an idiot, I watched the video with the fighter in it where the guy repairs it. What does he land on, a capital ship or a static base?

I think that's a base, iirc it was on an asteroid and that shit's static
I hope it's stable enough physics wise to have cap-ship-borne fighters. I don't think I'd play any other game if that were the case.
I think that's a base, iirc it was on an asteroid and that shit's static
Static? I don't know. It can be destroyed, and for all we know asteroids could have similar physics and be moved around. (Flying asteroid ships, hell yes.)
Right, well, this looks amazing. Can't wait for it to come out. Thank you OP, and thank you fellow posters for bumping this enough for me to see.
Do we know if the ships and shit are completely built from our imaginations and the materials we gather, or are they sort of pre-made blueprints that we just fill with a certain number of materials?
Oh god, this is fucking awesome, I just fucking came from the awesomeness of this shit.

I can't remember where but someone in the other thread found a quote by the developer that ship design is freeform. There is a video somewhere too.

Old video but shows him building some stuff.
This looks pretty cool but there are already lots of block related spaceship building games; I hope this one has something to make it a bit different.
I will only buy this if it has TTS along the lines of Moonbase Alpha.

Watched all the videos, this game looks goddamn awesome; pretty much exactly the sort of game i've been waiting for. Definitely getting this.

One of my favorite parts of this game is how much thought it seems has gone into making the player controls decent; it makes it so much more immersive when your character is more than just a bounding box. In starmade, your character just felt like a means of getting from one ship to the next, while here it looks like it'd be just as fun to have a shootout on foot as in a ship.
Just watched the trailers for this, I have never been this excited for a sandbox game!
