I want ropes/winches. Imagine having a ship that launched those dampening parasites at the enemy ship and then pulled them all towards you, that'd be intense.
more autism [thumb]http://i.imgur.com/cxbWL7Q.jpg[/thumb] The cutaway still doesn't show the side corridors and two more aux engineering rooms which run behind the rooms you see here, but you get the picture. I left that largish room in case they add any more cool stuff to add. Ideally if I was ever going to use this in MP I would have to relocate the command deck somewhere internally. Maybe if I shortened the generous cargo hold a little and squeeze it between that and the reactor room.
New ship WIP. Feedback welcome. Geez, I need to get into this again. I sort of put it down for a while, but I'm not busy. Anybody got a good spaceship inspiration website I can look at?

I got a good 376 pictures of spaceships saved to a folder on my desktop because of this site. Found so many unique designs in there. Fair warning though, if you're addicted to this kind of eyecandy like I am, you will probably be stuck on this site for 2- 3 days going all the way to the back of the archives.
After an unfortunate incident that resulted in the loss of 12 cargo crates and the control tower, I designed this. A cargobox framework called the 'bumblebee', has an independent damper system that stops it from floating around in space when you accidentally bump into it.
I was toying around with this today, and I had an idea. Wouldn't it be great if there was a "console" tile, where you could access the ship's terminal page without having an ugly large ship cockpit sticking out of the side of whatever you're making? That way you could easily turn off the power to the cargo's engines and pull it around without shearing off your docking gear. Also, you could put panels like this in a ship's engineering bay, where it would make sense to be able to reroute power and resources around your ship without necessarily being able to pilot it. For example, it would be something like this:

Just a thought.

Eventually what I just did was only power it with a single generator. That way, I can just go up to the generator and switch that off which cuts power to everything else. It works, but it limits my power outage and it's still very inconvenient. I really wanted a connected terminal though, something I can bind to certain aspects of the station. For example, I wanted to be able to lock the landing gear on the docking/ cargo pad without having to unlock the landing gear in the repair bay. Would be extremely convenient.

Throw a kinetic torpedo in there, fly at enemies, pull up at last second, and watch as they become the latest addition to the scrap heaps.

Where'd you get the inspiration?
That ship looks cool as shit. Where'd you get the inspiration?
Looks to be the "Generic Terran" look, unless he has a particular inspiration. (i like it a lot tho)
you should be able to place configurable switches on walls that let you control individual console stuff like landing gear on/off without entering an interface
I was thinking, don't we already have consoles? You walk up to any keypad and press k, and you get a list of everything you can enable and disable in the ship, with the ability to turn it on or off. Not that I disagree with there being a dedicated console block at all. That would be pretty cool. Anyway, I built a ship today. Here's a look at the hallway that leads up to the bridge. I took some inspiration from the Normandy for this bit. I also found that reflectors behind windows looks really cool, but tanks my frames. [t]http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/902139784027848436/5A2F34D0A55405BE0338DC2524689E3C1447F868/1024x576.resizedimage[/t] I think my main problem when building ships is that I don't plan them out very well, specifically the insides. I had to sort of cram everything you need in a ship into a 5 wide, 16 tall fuselage.
Life is easier if you build the outside around the ship after you've done the insides.
Life is easier if you build the outside around the ship after you've done the insides.
I think I should learn to do that. This is the reactor room on the ship I am working on (posted at the top of this page) that I had already built the outer hull for. The room would have turned out better if I had done it first then built the outer hull.
Anyone have any idea why the background of one of my saves has turned fully grey, the view distance has shortened a lot, and the FPS has dropped to 4 after an alt-tab? Spent a long time after finally getting this game to work building a big ship and Im going to be pissed if I lose it
It happens to me all the time, just exit and restart and it should be fine. Might need to exit to windows, but it'll be fine next load. At least it is for me.
I followed your guys' suggestions of chamfers and I chamfered EVERYTHING [t]http://i.imgur.com/FjjHrl0.jpg[/t] ~~so body chiseled~~ [t]http://i.imgur.com/S6azhJw.jpg[/t] oh yeah look at those recessed thrusters [t]http://i.imgur.com/tprQ8Rf.jpg[/t] I don't know why I like this area, but post-chamferpocalypse it looks quite nice
No no no, chamfer the outer edges by like 5 blocks, not 1. I should of said that earlier..

So here are 3 different styles cutting back quite a bit more [t]http://i.imgur.com/TVsMpRy.jpg[/t] and here is one cutting pretty drastically back. (which I think is most in line with what wicker is suggesting) [t]http://i.imgur.com/GQyusyM.jpg[/t] Which one is best, or am I still missing the point by a mile? [editline]24th November 2013[/editline] I tried using regular sloped blocks but they are just too steep enough imo
You could have a variety of different slops to give it a sort of ribbed effect if you wanted. I dislike what ramps look like but it's closed to what I had envisioned. Just try it out all round the ship and vary it a bit to see what you think. It's your ships so do what the hell you want with it :P
I started working on a new ship [t]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/506949355505359051/A2D59C90174EB4CA639E69B5F67E701223635365/[/t] I'm not sure if I'll follow through with completing it.
I think they look like they'd be vents when used like that, too bad they're not.
