It's a 3D doodad, got it.
Nope, that's what an actual virus looks like. Creepy little feller, isn't he?
The "legs" are used as propulsion, pushing the phage along in your body. It finds a cell, sticks to it with those legs, and acts as a little syringe, depositing RNA into the cell. The RNA multiplies, and the cell eventually bursts with more of those little viruses.
Fascinating stuff, really.
Oh, but the coolest part? They're not organic, or alive. They can be dried out, preserved, and then reconstituted millions of years later. They're the closest thing we have to a naturally-occurring robot.

Electron microscopes make images by high-resolution electron beam scanning. It creates a 3D tonemap, not a direct photograph. That's why it has ambient occlusion.
Very interesting,

Dude I fucking love spaceship viruses, hands down my favorite virus type.
As a guy studying biology, this particular page amazes me at how idiotic society can be, well, not unless you're all 15 years old

that people on this page have an interest in biology
or is your reading comprehension not up to scratch

a "3D doodad" in the same way that a scanned document is just a "2D doodad".
Nyeugh. Finished. Diagonal shit looks cool.

A short test run highlights a few issues. Because I'm using landing gear to hold the shaft in place I can't dock to the asteroid, so the ship will drift slightly and hole isn't straight. The drill head also gets damaged when it retracts, so I have to add some protection to it.
The best bit though is that it doesn't gut itself simply from extending and retracting. You can throw the ship around wildly with the drill unattached and it doesn't damage itself.
Also the lag is monumental. Sucking the debris out with a grav gen helps slightly.
We need a seperate part that sucks in objects.
Space hoovers would be awesome.
Also, we could make a fully functional Mega Maid
how do u suck vacuum

With a vacuum cleaner? :v:

That reminds me, my Grade 8 science teacher compared Viruses with the Magog Swarm ships in Andromeda because of the way they're designed and attach to ships to spew out Magog
http://andromeda.wikia.com/wiki/Magog_Swarm_Ship
I was the only one in the class to get the reference, or at least the only one to say they did.

with an even stronger vacuum

gravity gens that point away from the target, objects are affected by gravity after all.

wow this looks trippy
oh god I just got the best idea ever for a ship

thats a pretty awesome resemblance.
They just need to add brown colour.
That's the submarine from Atlantis right?
Godamn, I want to watch that film now..
Yep. The only measurements I could find on it was that is was 116m long, according to the atlantis wiki. After watching the movie again and overlaying grids using people for scale, I decided that was complete bullshit. When they made the movie, some shots of it were drawn, and some shots were done using cgi, so there were quite a few size and shape issues, but I peiced it together anyhow. It ended up being 225m long, not including the tail. 322m with the tail.

Im even gonna guild little tiny boarding pods I can launch from the launch tubes.
[t]http://cloud-3.steampowered.com/ugc/450655087678280193/6F34256C3A2F31575B974E4E41D1B4EBDEB754AD/[/t]

Gorgeous. I so look forward to when I am finally done with my ship and can move on to smaller, more manageable ships.
mini fighter/boarding pods done

How cute. My smallest ship yet launched from my largest ship yet.
id really like to see an actual pod mechanic
Mega Maid
Even if it doesn't suck (or blow), this needs to be done.
using Squeeqy Mackoys penetration tower idea, I made a ship slicer

didn't bother to edit sound yolo
[editline]4th December 2013[/editline]
need a few improvements though. need to extend the tube and the slicer itself since it wasn't long enough to completely slice through the red ship :v: should probably add sideways thrusters and gyros to the drill as well so I can squeeze it back in if it rolls or slides a little. aaand add some more thrusters on the front so I can attach myself to the target ship faster
