Well, as far as scanners go, I had a bit of a more abstract idea that has very little chance of actually being used. But my idea was that, in the case where we get programmable computers, we could have a much more sophisticated scanning system. In this fantasy setting, different machines give off different radiation/heat patterns. It would be up to the engineer to program their scanners to interpret these signals. The interesting part comes in when you realize that players could manipulate their ships to distort these readings through methods such as layering, heat shielding, toggling machinery, etc. giving players with more sophisticated scanning algorithms an advantage. Obviously there are several flaws in this idea, and is likely too complex for a game like this, but it was just a neat thought to share.
i'm going to do the polar opposite of logical and reasonable and cram EVERYTHING into the bridge shield generator domes of a star destroyer, bastards will never see it coming
wish I had the motivation to complete my ships. was originally making some sort of mining ship with drones to do the actual mining. completed the hangar, made the basic outline of the bridge, made the hull and had the engine room outline completed.

Ive been working on a little project lately, inspired from bolt loaded mac cannons. [t]http://puu.sh/5KfO9[/t] The cannon, has about 70~ grav generators propelling the rock. [t]http://puu.sh/5KfOK[/t] The inside of the barrel. It looks pretty cool, IMO. [t]http://puu.sh/5KfPC[/t] The loading bay, where you can clamp down the asteroid so that you can turn and what not. I have a toggleable gravity generator, so when the time is right, I can turn that on and unclamp the asteroid, and it gets fed into the main grav field. (sorry about getting my cursor stuck in this one) [t]http://puu.sh/5KfQp[/t] The rear end, showing off the feed tube and control chair. Feed tube has windows for aesthetics, but they don't affect the asteroid as long as its not bouncing in the feed tube. If its bouncing, its going to miss anyways. [t]http://puu.sh/5KfTl[/t] The damage it does. That is an eight block thick sheet of metal, and I bet if I made it bigger it would have just kept on going as well. I lost the asteroid with that test fire, but I think it was like 3.21k or something. I am going to keep toying around with this, perhaps shoot some stock ships or something, see how much chaos I can do.
Rock cannons are fun but really unreliable. I built one and it tore straight through the Red ship - leaving a clean hole from the bottom to the top. However the next time I tried it the rock clipped straight through. I was never able to replicate that first shot.

That, or if they are going too fast. Ive only had really reliable success with bigger rocks.

How do you get big rocks? mining yields only small pebbles.
How do you get big rocks? mining yields only small pebbles.
collect them. the total mass of the rock determines which model it uses
If things are going as planned, we are going to see a big juicy christmas update.
fffffffffffffffffffff
If things are going as planned, we are going to see a big juicy christmas update.
god dammit, I'd rather not know and be surprised, suspense is gonna kill me
update when christmas?
update when christmas?
Hm, I wonder when...
If things are going as planned, we are going to see a big juicy christmas update.
Jokes on you, it actually comes out on the third day of Kwanzaa.
I just hope they add something similar to wire/redstone or so.
Action groups. Darth, make them do it!
I know it seems like a minor discovery but i really like it because it shows that with a bit of imagination and ingenuity you can create some awesome weapons in this. Pardon my english
I've been playing with this but all my shots seem to just clip through the ship or disappear when they get more than about 20m away. You can probably expect another video when I get it working.
probably because some of us know that we will never be able to make something as epic as that
I had the exact same attitude on seeing other people's massive ships. Just start making ships and you get better at it. Here, have a re-capping album of progression shots to remind you of it's meager beginnings. Early versions had a habit of destroying themselves. I am one of those guys that builds secret asteroid bases with loadsadefences but I gotta admit, having a capital ship with an autoloaded mac cannon could be fucking sweet, those things do so much damage.

If they are going to add something like wire, I really hope there is going to be something similar to Expression2. I feel like source/gmod wasted E2's potential a bit. Still trying to get used to the scale, it's very different from source/gmod's very weird scale. Any tips for making fast maneuverable ships? Currently I can make fast ships, but as soon as I go above a certain speed I almost lose control and will always overshoot my movements. I tried using 1 or more gyros, but doesn't feel like it helps. Is the turning thrusters ratio towards the forward/backwards thrusters what's causing it?
all these mac cannons are giving me so much ideas when i get to make my star destroyer i swear to god it'll have an axial ASteroid-Shooting MUNition CHarger (ASSMUNCH) as the primary weapon [editline]12th December 2013[/editline]
I feel like source/gmod wasted E2's potential a bit.
oh really? because after its use became more widespread, i felt like doing everything through lines of code and one small chip wasted GMod's potential

I don't understand the people saying "waah wiremod ruined gmod but in reality i'm just bored of playing!", when there was nothing stopping you from playing without it either. That's not to say space engineers should have something like wiremod built in, but the facilities to create similar things for the game would be incredible.
wire ruined gmod, why do you people all want it?
Wire expanded Gmod. Our server went from building catapults and numpad cars to building automotive engines, cruise missiles, submarines with dynamic weight based computer controlled ballast tanks, three dimensional radar systems, and systems to disrupt said radar systems. We had a blast because of Wire.

Wire took the possible lifetime of Gmod's sandbox mode and stretched it to unforeseen proportions for those who are interested in it. I mean, I made a "SAM"-site that fires radiators at unsuspecting flying objects and attempts to predict where to fire :v: (scratch probably means the version that actually fired missiles and sometimes blew itself up)

He lost. And then shortly afterwards I discovered a bug in my E2 engine timer that was incorrectly handling throttle. Forgot to have it output T... it had simply been outputting 1 for throttle, making the throttle nothing more than a goddamn placebo for the 4 years that I used it. Some sort of simple programming mechanic would be AWESOME for this game. Either officially supported or modded in, being able to automate or compute things on the fly would seriously expand ones capabilities.
My thought: I hope they focus on building a strong core game with very flexible modability and allow the community to implement things like Wiremod and life support, which worked well with Garry's Mod.
wire ruined gmod, why do you people all want it?
I hear this a lot from people but they never give a good reason. Why did you not like Wire? Did you feel alienated because you weren't a programmer? Do you think the simplicity of wire physical components diminishes the impressiveness of the builder's skill? I loved wire, it taught me valuable programming skills at an early age. Now I'm coming into a GN&C career and I credit the hell out of Erkel and the other wire devs. So help me understand your POV. Why? Why why?
Well the difference being is that gmod is more for 'themepark' contraptions that you play around with and go 'thats cool'. In this game its going to be 'thats cool, now lets smash the fuck out of it' in MP, so you got to be careful about making the game tedious having to implement a wire system in every new ship you build.
