Hello.
Some people are simply really good at what they do, and after looking at the videos on your channel, I must say, you are really good at making badass videos.
Realistically yes. That is the most likely way war in space will happen. Long-range sensors and attacks beyond visual range. I was more referring to cinematically.
Cinematically, it's boring. But there doesn't seem to be any middle-ground between realistic and what is done in cinema. It's all "let's put everything on the same plane, same orientation and broadside like sea bound ships," completely ignoring it's space. You can get creative, and original in the space battles and still be cinematic.
It's very hard to buy in sci-fi that space battles will be fought along a single plane or axis.
thats why I like David Weber for his semi-hard science fiction battles (think macross missile spam cranked up to 11)
Although he still gets shit wrong (fucking weber foam)

Haven't gotten into David Weber yet. What about weber foam?
Realistic space battles will probably end up like the modern fighter jet.
It can completely destroy it's target long before either of them see each other due to missiles and radar detection, ending in a single flip of the switch in most likelyhood. Battles begin and end before the planes even come into sight of each other.
These days most planes are equipped with countermeasures both physical and electronic and they can usually detect an incoming attack and thus avoid it. Closing the gap and gaining a visual, as well as dogfighting are still integral parts of air combat.

This gave me a brilliant idea:
Offensive Chaff made of heavy rock pellets for when people start chasing each other.
Squeegy, get that virominer ship running.
those star wars scenes almost make it look like the ships aren't actually in orbit
like, they're literally hovering in space over the planet
makes no sense, but it would explain the gravity (and direction) as well as the ship falling down when damaged

I always imagine that those ships must have some form of repulsion force they can generate to counteract the gravitational forces of the planet they sit near, thus allowing them to sit stationary in space rather than orbiting and cancelling out any of the complications that come with an orbit, such as small maneuvers vastly changing the orbital path and making it very hard to keep a fleet from drifting apart.
Trying to apply real science to Star Wars is nonsensical; Lucas just wrote what he thought would be cool or cinematic into it with no regard whatsoever for what would make sense scientifically. The ships hover there because scifi magic and they fall out of the sky because scifi magic.
How on earth is that ship reloading itself like that? YOU MUST TELL ME MACKOY
It doesn't reload itself, it just cycles pre-made ammo. Magazine contains 11 shots (there's 17 shots fired in the movie (sshhhh)).
Actually reloading it consists of copying and pasting a shell into each tube (takes about 10 seconds) and then, for each shell, take the gyroscopes off the back and gently and precisely float a 100kg rock into it and close over the back again (takes about 10 years).

But none of that stops it being fun to speculate how it could work. :)
"guys it's magic why are you trying to have fun"
This week's update added warheads!

And now we railgun with high explosives.

I really think they're a little too powerful...
At least they're far more powerful than those effects imply they should be. The crater left behind should not be bigger than the explosion was.
It doesn't feel right that just one of those things can pretty much annihilate a medium sized large ship.
It doesn't feel right that just one of those things can pretty much annihilate a medium sized large ship.
Presumably outside of creative mode they'll be quite hard to get the resources to craft.
They should add weaker warhead blocks as well. Not really fun annihilating everything with one block.
They should add weaker warhead blocks as well. Not really fun annihilating everything with one block.
From the look of it, small ship warheads are weaker.
haha awesome but completely overkill.
They really need to tone those down substantially.
Yeah those warheads seem waaaayy too powerful.
Squeegy, add them to your auto-gun.
I think it makes sense that a single small warhead should destroy one large block and damage the ones around it (and completely cripple a small craft unlucky enough to get hit by it) while a large warhead takes out a sphere 3 large blocks across with much much more superficial damage on top of that.
Squeegy, add them to your auto-gun.
Am doin'.
Also they shouldn't just completely destroy all of the blocks, maybe destroy some, damage others, so there's a chance of the explosion leaving some debris floating around.
Although I'm sure they'll tweak them at some point, it's an alpha after all.
eitherway I really like the effects and I can't wait to start flinging them about

if they're that good it really doesn't matter how hard they are to craft :P

Instead of just removing a giant sphere I would love it if could run a bunch of random slices through the ship and cut it into pieces before throwing them everywhere. If none of the slices are large enough to separate the ship you just now have a ship with some big nasty fractures in it. It would also stop small craft from being completely removed, which looks awful.
[editline]19th December 2013[/editline]
Well shit, added warheads to the ammo, every shot exploded upon firing.
I'll try this slightly differently...
Now we need heavy armor to be able to better withstand those large warheads

Thanks :D
Be sure to post another video of the enhanced destruction.

almost all star wars ships have what are called "repulsor lifts" which nullify gravity via movie magic.
also, yaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaay warheads. I'm feeling that next update will unlock guns.

Time to convert one of my tactical carriers into a torp launcher, and blow up my battlestar <3

Oh my christ, yes. That is EXACTLY what I wanted to be able to play around with.
brb building torpedo bombers

Ok, this is the damage done by the two shells that made it out, both hitting exactly the same spot and each had a single small warhead
But I just discovered something much, much better...

This is the effect of a single, completely regular kinetic round impacting inside the gravity field. I think this is caused by cascading debris.
