Space Engineers - Say goodbye to Starmade and Blockade runner.

Alright so aside from my noob questions, I have a rather large one:
Does anyone have any slight ideas as to how multiplayer is going to work? I see everyone with these gargantuan ships and moving parts, but how will a multiplayer server handle that? I mean, in Starmade you could make some pretty huge ships and still have decent performance, but Space Engineers makes Starmade look like a game you play on a flip phone.
in terms of latency? shouldn't be too much of a problem
in terms of how many ships you can have, probably the same as singleplayer

Depends on how they handle it. They could make everything clientside until two ships got within range of each other, and then budge all the physics and such over to the server. You'd only be tracking positions until then.
That's probably more difficult than it needs to be.

That's a big question, and we can only speculate.
Here are my guesses:
- Gibbing and deformation will be handled clientside, while physics, damage and position information are passed to the client from the server.
- Network performance is the real question - engine performance will probably not be significantly less than single player
- Clients will not receive position information for ships outside of some locally defined region, to avoid wasting network throughput
- Player limits are anyone's guess. Hopefully they'll leave it up to the host, and let the user tolerate whatever network slowness results
I'll bet every time they SCRUM (I'm assuming they're using Agile/BDD because of the weekly stable builds) they have a discussion about the path to implementing multiplayer. I'm really looking forward to seeing how they pull it off.
All that said, it would be so cool to see MP in this game in its current state. Everybody flying through space trying to kill each other with these wacky piston and wheel contraptions. I hope the final game has a heavy reliance on ingenuity and doesn't implement everything for you.
I have the coolest semi-working magazine system for a test ship. Sure, I can't shoot things but I may be able to load them in arbitrary magazines.
Problem is I can't load the sub-mags on the big magazine without some kind of hydraulic rammer or linear actuator

They seem to be pointing that way with the introduction of Warheads... I'd be surprised if the actual weapons weren't oriented more toward small craft rather than cruisers.

A buttload of small ship warheads do almost jack shit to large blocks. I've tried. They can destroy a single layer at a time but that's about it.
So uhh, I've been interested in this game for a while now, and I've been thinking if I can run it.
I checked the ''Recommended System Requirements'' image on the first page of this thread, and here's my specs:
I might've messed up something while looking these, e.g. searched something completetly different (I've not really done spec-checking much)
OS: Microsoft Windows 7, Service Pack 1
Processor: AMD Phenom(tm) II X4 955 Processor 3.20 Hz
Memory: 4 GB RAM
Graphics: ATI Radeon HD 5700 Series
DirectX: DirectX 11
Hard Drive: 202 GB free space (I might've messed this one up because computer is in Finnish)
Audio: I got like three different things when I looked up the audio.
*Sound 1: Speakers (2-VIA High Definition Audio) (I got headphones though)
*Sound 2: SPDIF Interface (TX1) (2-VIA High Definition Audio)
*Sound 3: HD audio HDMI out (2-VIA High Definition Audio)

That's not the most powerful rig in the world but I would think you should be able to run it. Maybe not absolutely flawlessly but it should be playable. Don't take my word for it though, I can only make vague guesses.

If you are unsure of whether or not you can run a game, use this website:
http://www.systemrequirementslab.com/cyri
It scans your pcs hardware and compares them to the minimum and recommended system requirements of that game.

Mmkay, got somewhat past Minimum. CPU speed doesn't seem to be enough and video card got no chance. But then again, this is family-shared computer and parents didn't think this as a gaming computer.
Hopefully I'll get my own computer next year.

Judging by this guys tests, the small warhead damage seems reasonable. The large warhead damage seems a little out there but hopefully they are a moderate pain to make. They seem good otherwise, at least to me  .

edit: Wow those pictures lined up well.
This fired a stone, by the way.
Just a stone.
If you want to see how much real damage it does the target has to be outside the range of the gravity generators. A bug leads to the damage being magnified when inside a gravity field.
Haven't gotten into David Weber yet. What about weber foam?
weber foam was Weber fucking up really badly by underestimating the mass of ships and giving them the density of stryofoam.
weber foam was Weber fucking up really badly by underestimating the mass of ships and giving them the density of stryofoam.
Weber foam sounds like something I should be using to keep my plates and silverware clean :v:.
Large Warheads seem terribly overpowered.

Funnily enough, I have a hydraulic rammer/linear actuator, but no working magazine system...
Maybe we should merge into one mega-being?
Also: I hope missiles are physical entities, so you can destroy them if you hit them with the gatling gun.
I'm starting to grow really weary of the copy/paste system which as fucked me over several times already by pasting the ship right in front of my face, making it impossible to properly recreate a ship because my character is considered in collision with the ship.
Even though I flew back several dozen feet away to have a clear view of the ship before copying it.
Also is there a way of sending a warhead flying using a gravity generators ?
Also is there a way of sending a warhead flying using a gravity generators ?
Could you strap one to the front of a casing with a rock inside it?
warheads should be there own kind of ship that is affected by gravity, and also have the block size of small ships.

It was way outside the gravity range

I can't wait to see the rocket launcher and see if the rockets are guided or not and there damage on bigger ships.
think I just caused an implosion while trying out a railgun :v:
There are currently no kind of shields in the game so yeah the warheads seem very overpowered, for now consider them as a fun toy rather than the final result in the game.

not sure what the hell went wrong here. was supposed to make a railgun with a shell with some explosives on but apparently that's the recipe for portable blackholes
[editline]20th December 2013[/editline]
also about the warheads, I don't know if they're overpowered or not. there is a huge risk involved if you decide to bring them to battle. they're incredibly sensitive and even if they're in a casing they'll explode if the case is hit. it's hard to aim for a moving ship as well, so I don't see them very viable for combat

I think we can weaponize this.

I don't know... I made a small ship torpedo bomber that can easily carry two large ship warheads. It then essentially dive bombs the large ship and releases the torpedo which continue on their own. It's very maneuverable and easy to aim. I don't see how anything that's decently sized would be able to dodge it.
As a side note: I REALLY wish small ship landing gears would attach to other small ships.

once actual guns are implemented I'm going to assume that the machinegun sentries won't be able to do much damage as fast as for example a rocket launcher, but if one of those bullets hit a small ship carrying one of those things that small ship is gonna be annihilated. it's hard to say without having proper guns in yet though, but as it stands riiight now (with no ship guns) they're fairly overpowered I'd say

They do.
Really?!? I would have sworn I tried everything and they wouldn't engage.
Just line them up and press P.
