i'd like to see the two opposite ends of the spectrum, regarding weapons
aka 1. reliable but fairly weak weapons (assault rifles; turrets, etc)
and 2. extremely powerful weapons that are also very hard to use (gigantic, static cannons; stupidly strong phaser beams that hit very small areas and/or take a lot of energy to use, etc)
I'd love actual halo style MAC cannons that you have to build whole ships around.
I'm thinking the more powerful the weapon, the more unwieldy it should be.

Ohh ninja'd.

I think what would be good to see are different types of weapons in this vein. For instance you don't get to place gigantic arrays of missile launchers because they would be a huge drain on power and say, ammunition. So you build small turret arrays with missiles and chainguns or weak lasers we're used to seeing in scifi
any larger weapons are ones you have to build the way we're building rainguns. Not just simple select and lay down object blocks, but complicated things we have to build letting us free form it a bit but with all the pieces we need to build them. Right now rail guns aren't actually railguns. They're gravity launchers. What I would rather see is exactly the opposite, real rail guns using a magnetic type of interaction with the objects you're using. This means giving us electromagnetic blocks and just creating it's own type of force, I'd imagine this is possible.
For the laser version of it would be good to see it in a similar sort, requiring a directly connected array of power or some other block that would store energy. A dedicated array would need to be built and the ships would be formed around their tools.
I don't know but I like the sounds of it at least.
im pretty sure everyone knows its impossible, its just fun imagining stuff, gee

seriously not every idea needs to stir up a super serious argument about how unviable it is
more people need to say this on the official forums
rather than
It may be titled Space Engineers, but it is trying to pass off as a Space game without planets, which, to me, is ridiculous. Having a space game without planets is like a day without sun, music without rhythm, or not having any arms. (Mock my imagery if you like, but it is a compelling literary device and, I feel, if you used it your argument may come across in a better way.)
so of course i mocked him

I really wish I could fit more than 1 railing in a single space would help a lot. . .

yeah, that'd be great
i think different arrangements of, say, "laser-directing" blocks, should behave differently
for example, if you put a single laser-directing block and set it to deal X damage, it'll need a certain amount of power to fire. however, the more laser-directing blocks you use (in order to create a beam that covers a larger area), the more the power needed will grow
basically, the energy needed for lasers (to hit with the same power as their smaller counterparts) grows exponentially the larger they become

To add onto that the laser array could potentially effect say thermal absorption in a block or something, or cause a greater ablative effect. Because cutting lasers are kinda silly, real lasers would use ultra strong pulses to ablate material and then detonate it into a plasma cloud. The U.S military investigated this http://web.archive.org/web/20011114035512/http://www.dtic.mil/ndia/smallarms/Moore.pdf So I think lasers working like this in conjunction to their array size could be interesting. Also having a larger array cool/recharge faster or something could be of use.
I'm going to have to make a video of this for you guys.
I've made a bolt action loaded gravity gun. It blew some big ass holes in some big ass pieces of station.
We're talking about instances of asteroid chains and you're talking about planets.
when someone says "World" in the context of a space game of course i think of planets
Orbital bombardment is so far out of the scale of this game it's not funny.
well tbh from the brief experience that i've had reading your posts you don't seem to find that many things funny in the first place
With all this weapons tech, they need to add some way to protect yourself other than stupidly thick pieces of metal. I want to see something like ductility, like metal that is easy to penetrate but that doesn't shatter, and metal that is very hard and that will shatter projectiles, but that can be broken by explosives.
Then we can have stuff like composite armor!
how about point defences too
Different armor levels is a must. No idea why last time it was mentioned, everyone disagreed with it.
I wish they'd make RCS modules so you can have more movement on your ship without stuffing it with thrusters everywhere which frankly doesn't look that good in most cases.
Man, that new update that's coming...
Let's just say, you will be satisfied with it a lot.

Putting explosives in landing gear? that's so kerbal
Fuck waiting for a sale, bought it now. Was tired of waiting, and I can justify one Christmas splurge for myself - got nothing else for the sale so far.
Different armor levels is a must. No idea why last time it was mentioned, everyone disagreed with it.
We already know the devs plan some sort of light/medium/heavy distinction, given that heavy armor is already in the game but disabled.
[editline]21st December 2013[/editline]
That reminds me, there's a mod that enables the heavy armour; has anyone tested the explosives against those blocks?
Everyone else got it.
your point being?
your point being?
His point being that you're being silly.
They were talking with regard to the game 'world' which is synonymous with the game 'level'.
They were wondering how the game will generate future areas of playable space in the world/level.
Someone suggested it generating procedurally, such as how Minecraft for example generates each chunk (section of the world/level) based on the one(s) before it and factors in what was in it.

looks like antennas make for the best reactive armor, at least against explosives. i think they look pretty nice just for the greeble factor
I do like his videos but there does always seem to be some disconnect between his theorycrafting and how the game will likely actually play out.
Like he's trying too hard.

"Another good part to breach is commercial parts of the ship where people are likely to be casually staying"
lol really
and like he imagines ships to be crewed by like 30 players or something.

Maybe YOUR ships won't have a crew but mine will, I mean what kind of ship can be operated by 1 person in a combat situation?

depends on if we have any version of wire or what not.
having to always need other people for your ship is not always going to be fun
why? because it's not always going to be fair that some shmucks have to be your crew all the time.

Hell, in the Battlefield games it's almost a tradition to sabotage/outright blow up friendly vehicles if you don't get them first.

The issue is the sheer scale. I love the concept of having huge 30 people battleships operating together, but take SS13 as an example - no-one does their job, except for maybe security and engineering at the start. On a smaller scale, you might get 5 or so people together, which would be pretty amazing, but I don't think you'll ever get a huge crew up and working without a lot of issues.
