I personally design my ships around a crew of 2-5, even the massive ones, with +1 per small-ship hangar space. You don't need a lot. 1 pilot, 2 gunners, maybe a couple engineers, and then small-ship pilots, who can do plenty of other things while not piloting their small-ship. What I look forward to is playing the game with friends who maybe don't know how to build ships but can totally fly/crew things the rest of us make. I hope that the game pans out to be accessible and fun like that.
I could definitely see crews working with people you know, but I design my ships to be runnable by one person (with more as optional) simply because, after a decade of playing various games online, as a rule I never rely on the people in public servers for anything other than meatshields.

Didn't they say there would be pirates or some sort of NPC ships in the future? That implies npc peoples, perhaps you could have some of those guard/crew your ship to like repair stuff or operate turrets or something like that. Or hell serve as guards or just for decoration.

If people do make larger ships it will probably be clans with their members piloting boarding crafts or fighters.

If people do make larger ships it will probably be clans with their members piloting boarding crafts or fighters.[/QUOTE] well this is part of the problem, right? as far as we can tell right now, in the state the game is in, building a small ship is going to be better than using large ship blocks because of the low top speed, and the crunch on materials but building small ships is limiting and boring so something has to happen to allow us to fly our bigger creations, for them to be viable having to rely on a clan of people to run a ship pretty much guarantee that this game will be pretty boring if we HAVE to do that to see some level of viability.

I'm guessing any specialized large ships in the future will be for mining/kinetic weapons fueled by rocks, perhaps having a conveyor drop a rock into the gravity chute bound to a hotkey or something.
fuck big ships with crews, i'm looking forward to traveling through space with 3-4 other dudes, each in small, fighter styled ships, destroying ships that are much bigger than ours it's the kind of stuff that's cool to think about and also very possible in the game's current state

I've said it before and I'll say it again, with as little offense as possible, why do almost all of you talk about the game as though it will be the same at release as it is now. I can almost guarantee you that the only weapons will not be physical, awkwardass torpedoes launched by landing gear. yup, while i normally think the mechanics should be realistic I would be happy with some system that slowly stops wrecks and substantial bits of debris from drifting out of the gameworld. Otherwise they're just going to float off at the velocity they were when they were destroyed. I mean its pretty much a trope that asteroid belts should have wrecks sat perfectly in them
