Space Engineers - Say goodbye to Starmade and Blockade runner.

I just wonder what the point is in using gatling guns, they don't seem to do any real damage to even light ship hulls.
I've used a gattling gun to act as a tracer for my missiles.
i bet it's guns.
And to think some of you people voted me optimistic.
i use missiles for tracers for my missiles
I kinda hope they add some sort of power lines like in blockade runner.
for those who don't know how it works

I'm sure it has been posted here before though

I really like this idea, but isn't it sort of the idea that power is transmitted through the interior/hull blocks?

yeah, but a system like that would give it a lot more depth. imagine the satisfying feeling you get if you manage to depower half of the enemies ship because you hit just the right spots. suddenly all of their backwards thrusters get disabled, important weapons shut down, gyroscopes lose power, etc etc. would be pretty awesome and panic inducing in the middle of a fight

Likewise, it would be annoying as fuck to get nicked by an asteroid fragment and suddenly you lose all control.

normally you dont run important cables on the outside of your ship

where the powerlines go would be up to you. either you could put a single line or multiple lines to ensure you still have power even if one goes out. you can put a few clustered in the center of your ship or have multiple lines all around the outer hull, maybe even some in the middle with that too
how easily you would lose power due to damage would be entirely up to the persons placement of the lines
I don't know, would that be to overcomplicate a feature? personally I'd love to see it in the game just to add more depth and tactics to fights
I just wonder what the point is in using gatling guns, they don't seem to do any real damage to even light ship hulls.
are you kidding me? gatling guns fucking rape small ships, and rockets lay waste to them.

(Disclaimer: People really don't like this idea here... for some reason. We've gone over it before, it goes to mudslinging really quickly. It's like atmospheres, or shields.)
That said, again, a really good idea to add some depth to the game.

Yeah, power and signal cables are already present inside all of the blocks according to the devs.
I just wonder what the point is in using gatling guns, they don't seem to do any real damage to even light ship hulls.
They wreck small ships, although not so much to large ones.
I also assume it has something to do with travel distance and resources used to create both types of ammo.
Remember this is still beta peeps.
powerlines would be nice if you could make parasite ships with them that drain power. imagine a bunch of people flying those and hooking up to your ship while it powers down. Scary shit on those gigantic ships because you can't find them just by looking through the cockpit.

goddamn ninjas

Having to run your own cables would also clutter up a ship very quickly, especially if you ran redundant cabling.

You could run it inside the scaffold blocks before you welded them shut, perhaps?
would make people actually want to build schematics of ships to remember where those damn wires are so you can fix them, and give something for people to steal so they can know where those damn wires are so they can drain them or something.

The only thing that I think would make sense is some type of block that is better at carrying power than the others... but then you would need to introduce some sort of negative to the normal blocks' way of transferring it.
What the devs are doing now is representing all connected blocks as one system. Everything has access to everything as long as it is connected to the imaginary network... For me, that makes sense.
I can definitely see some great gameplay mechanics grow from having powerlines instead of the current system.
how I see it would work would have to be able to put the power lines within other blocks so they won't clutter your ship. like the last thing they showed in the blockade runner video, power blocks which can be put in a 3x3 space in the hull/armor block.
as pigbear also mentioned, imagine how awesome it would be to have a device that would leech off of the ships powernet? this would require you to know where the powerlines go though, which a boarding party could locate or have an infiltrator. you could plan your attacks by infiltrating a large ship, locate important systems, figure out where the wires go, etc etc.
one thing which would have to be added with the powernet wires would be a power maintenance panel. it'd show the ship in light blue blocks on a blue background, then highlight where all the power wires go around the ship. this would show damaged lines or areas of the ship without power as well in case something is hit and you can't figure out where on the powernet the damage is.
shields are stupid for gameplay (lets wrap everything up in a magic health regen bubble!) and don't make sense apart from 60s scifi TV shows trying to save money
they really shouldn't have ever became a sci fi trope beyond that
Here's an idea, why not hull plating? Have a module for hardening the outer shell of your vessel, at the cost of some power. I know there's going to be heavier blocks added for more armoring, but that makes your ship heavy and slow.
Hull plating should make your ship stay the same weight for a harder exterior at the cost of a significant amount of power. Probably not as effective as the heavy blocks but harder to craft. The tradeoff here is keeping the same maneuverability and increasing survivability at the cost of being able to get away quickly, unless you stock shitloads of extra generators, which increases mass.
how about NX-01 hullplating style where they polarized said hullplating but it wasn't magic shields or forcefields or anything.
how about NX-01 hullplating style where they polarized said hullplating but it wasn't magic shields or forcefields or anything.
Kinda exactly what i described. But yes, it makes sense. No space magic, just apply energy to outer shell in right way, metal crystal structure changes to become harder and you got some stronger armor.
So, I just got this game a few days ago and I can't stop playing it. After treating the starter zone like an explosive playground, I wanted to make a hangar to keep all of my future ships. The hangar had to be more mobile then a space station so I just decided to put all of my ships in a bigger ship. Here's what I'm working on now:
[thumb]http://puu.sh/5ZRAy[/thumb]
[thumb]http://puu.sh/5ZRTv[/thumb]
Inside the hangar (the front part of the ship)
[thumb]http://puu.sh/5ZSEf[/thumb]
The inside is so huge the catwalk on the opposite wall doesn't even render properly.
[thumb]http://puu.sh/5ZRUr[/thumb]
[thumb]http://puu.sh/5ZRTR[/thumb]
The interior of the ship's back half is separated into four floors, which are connected by a giant cargo lift. Here's the generator room:
[thumb]http://puu.sh/5ZRTY[/thumb]
All four walls are covered with large generators.
There's going to be a lot more rooms and stuff when it gets finished. I barely touched the interiors and only two places have gravity in them. This spacecraft carrier's also gonna have a hangar door at some point (which you can see in the pics but it's only half done.)
It's a giant...rectangle? Hmm.

Addendum: these can easily be converted into dedicated cargo trains by swapping out the cockpits for medium cargo containers, or railguns by gutting the center for a shell to be clamped as it accelerates, then released at high speed.

hahahaaha
literal rail guns.

I already knew the answer, didn't want to ruin the hype. :v:
Hey, not to bring the discussion off topic, but has anyone played kinetic void?
I just bought it(impulse buy) and i'm starting it and building my first ship
first impressions are good, but I was wondering if any of you guys had played it before.
