Would it not be easier to have several corvettes carve off the refinery section with rocket launchers then have another ship grab the sheared off section and zip it off?
Yes, but thinking with practicality in mind will ruin it.
Oh god. These are only basic tools. We're all fucked if things continue at the rate they are.
That picture someone drew of Squeegy is goin to be a reality..

That was a lot of work to steal one refinery.
That's really creeping me out in an insect/spider sort of way.

I just realized that we are going to have a SE equivalent of the Reavers from Serenity.

That ship is supposed to be used in combat ? I thought it would be some kind of battlefield trash cleaner. A space garbage truck ^^.
In combat it would be really hard to use as the assaulted ship can defend itself, or flee...

that reminds me, has anyone made the serenity ship yet? if not i'll try but i can't promise it'll look good
Speaking of Serenity/Reavers, we need Tow Cables so we can tear ships in half and shit.
so how come guns make a sound in space but walking/running doesn't
Well given than you're really only gonna use Rockets, the entire ship will be fucked so it won't really matter.
yeah this is why we're calling game's combat fucked up until further notice.
So yeah, I bought this game couple of days backwards and it runs really nicely.
I also made my first ship.
''Huh, this isn't so hard like people in Space Engineers thread in FP talked (= making a good-looking small ship). If I just make it look as smooth as possible...''

But that would require structural integrity which would "take away from the game and ruin creativity"
I'm starting to hate the anti-realist mentality more and more.

I created a design philosophy where I make an internal beam like structure first for all of the major components to mount to. Then I build an armor hull around that connected via struts.

i'm sorry what everyone wants simulated bending/destruction of materials
too bad you'll be getting 0.1 fps so it's a no no
so how come guns make a sound in space but walking/running doesn't
because the game isn't finished

Load up any large ship save and start shooting at it, move it, bump into it, whatever.
If you have a good computer, your FPS will remain constant, but the physics simulation will slow to a crawl. That's because the engine is struggling just with the current damage we have now. (And if you have a bad computer, the game will be completely unplayable)
Can you imagine if the ships were soft body simulated on top of everything else?
having a stress based physics model would be pretty awesome

Nobody is suggesting soft-body simulation. That would be stupid.
I can't help but think they're being a bit dumb in deciding against "unrealistic fantasy stuff" like shielding, yet space travel is realistic even though we don't even have it properly done yet and may not for a long long time.

What.
This has got to be silliest argument for shields yet.
"We don't have space travel (even though we do) yet so lets violate laws of the universe"
Nobody is suggesting soft-body simulation. That would be stupid.
But you want stress calculations, the ability to bend whole ships, tear them in half with ropes... That is soft body simulation.

Assuming that it can't be done in a way that gets desired effects without significantly impacting performance.
Implying that we should hold back a game's potential for the sake of 5 year old lower middle range computers.

Thinking before speaking is usually a good idea.
Because I don't know what the hell you mean by "proper" space travel.

pwahah
I would rather we just use that performance potential to you know, run decent servers.
Limiting this game to small but realistic simulation of materials is holding back the game's potential.

The majority of gaming computers on the market are going to be rigs that were high end by the standards of several years ago. Keen is a business and they need to make money and in order to do that they need to make a game that can be played by their consumer base.

this game's supposed to be about engineers. if you want a safe ship then come up with a good design for one, you shouldn't be able to just make the most basic ship possible and then slap a bunch of bullshit on it so it's as good as a ship that someone actually thought about.
But you want stress calculations, the ability to bend whole ships, tear them in half with ropes... That is soft body simulation.
I personally haven't promoted bending because I don't think the engine supports it. So no, I don't want the ability to bend whole ships.
Honestly, I think adding beam sections for main support that take high damage would be a better addition. I think the desire for stress calculations (which are more than possible) comes from all of the ship blocks acting the same way physically.
Also, I wouldn't mind some "unrealistic" weapons/etc in creative mode. Lasers and shit would be fun, high impulse thrusters, blocks with variable physical properties (friction, weight, bounciness, magnetism, HP) would be really useful for building things too.
also idk what people mean with "shields" but reactive armor (both explosive and non-explosive) should definitely be added

also the gravity generator should be removed in the future
