We need programmable ships so we can make von neumann swarms. This would seriously be the most appropriate game for that.
The Von Neumann (or something similar) would work pretty well in Space Engineers if you ask me. Imagine a ship coming along and 'harvesting' some of your fleet's weapons/other systems, only to return later and use them against you for more harvesting >:D
Squeegy try coloring that monster black and see how it looks
they need to add green to the color palette. squeeqy could color that monster as a giant mantis
[editline]30th December 2013[/editline]
wait shit, there is green already, make a mantis!

Right now each colored block is applied with a new texture rather them a simply RGB change. So having 10 different colors is rendering 10 times more textures. It is currently not a big thing on our priority list but it is coming. :v:
Except literally nobody has said that it'd be necessary for them to be an AI swarm, you've literally just assumed that for no reason at all
And of course they'll be interacting with humans, why the fuck wouldn't they be, we're literally talking about possible enemies to the humans in space engineers
Yeah.
Killing them.
My scenario is, again, entirely unrelated to SE, but if you insist I continue needlessly correcting that which needs not be corrected: interacting with humans includes talking, helping with physical labor, working with machines, keyboards, buttons, etc. You're not doing any of that if you're the AI swarm sent by aliens, and I've already addressed the fact that AI in SE would be tied to humans at some point, so in their case it would make sense to have some humanoid robots, but yeah errybody can stop attacking this for no reason.
[editline]30th December 2013[/editline]
why would the enemy even have to be aliens?
Space Engineers is at its base a mining and ship construction simulator.
The most probably enemies therefore are going to be rival corporations or something to that effect.
maybe people aren't reading correctly or missed the part where I directly pointed out that I'd temporarily forgotten the time period and corrected myself saying:
We've got to remember the game is really not that far into the future, and while there might be pirates and AI, there won't be any alien forces, so nothing large scale or crazy. Humans will always be behind everything.
KILL ME NOW
You're missing the point. If it's a true AI it doesn't mean it will go for efficiency over looks. A true AI will have it's own goals, motives, desires beyond the primitive need to survive. In time an AI could even go as far as to develop true senses such as touch, taste, smell and so on.
uh
thanks for telling me what i already know?
i still don't see how it's relevant to humans designing non-humanoid robots, because they understand it's more efficient that way. humanoid shapes are a nice product of evolution, not the pinnacle of locomotion. nor does an AI need simulated humans in their ship if they are the ship.

furries in space
sounds like a porno

Ergh... I hate people that try and bring there odd fetishes into games, especially a game like this where it wouldn't fit in the slightest.

plus the space environment doesn't really lend itself to humanoid ambulation.
The AI won't design itself to be able to chase down game through endurance on a terrestrial environment.

jesus fuck i've already explained why they'd make complete sense
they could've been mass produced humanoid robots, or alien AI that tried to either infiltrate human society, or just to navigate captured ships (a possibility you just shrugged off, saying they'd just build their own ships, then scrap the man-made ones or just even leave them there, completely ignoring the fact that energy and resources might be pretty damn scarce in space)

imho if there's going to be AI's they should really just be weapons drones from rival companies. if they wanted to infiltrate human society they probably wouldn't be out in the depths of space anyway
http://forums.keenswh.com/post/the-amount-of-human-in-this-game-is-to-damn-high-6688706?pid=1280921987#post1280921987
Eugh.
You want fursuits in the game? Mod it in yourself, don't make the devs do it to satisfy your stupid fetish.

this thing that people keep quoting and bringing back was not about SE

just stop. not only has everyone already said this, and not only do i already know it, but your scenario is far more specific than mine. the fact that they're different entirely is not something you seem to want to acknowledge. I'm talking about a scenario in which they would not be useful. You're arguing for how they could be useful in a very unorthodox way.
Also no, resources are not scarce if you're a self-replicating swarm of robots working on a galactic scale and capable of crossing interstellar distances in the first place.

They really need to fix how "walls" are set up inside stations/ships though
They should on the border between blocks, not blocks sized

sure i'll drop the discussion for the sake of the thread, but jesus fuck, is it that hard to argue without being that pretentious? the amount of arrogance in every single post you make, christ.

it's not arrogance. i hate when people don't read my damn posts or cherry pick individual ideas or worse yet individual posts. there were like 6 or 7 repeat responses on the last page.

okay this literally isn't even dumbable but bye.

I'd very much like a new type (engine-wise) of block that changes depending if there are other (preferably armor) blocks nearby. Kind of like this:

Can be made transparent too

Clever, but hard to actually make a torpedo out of it. It looks quite large.
People are being pretty hateful about the furry thing. Don't get me wrong, the furry fandom is stupid to say the least, but people could respond in a way that says, "Hey, I may despise your fetish/fandom/whatever, but you will most likely only see this as a mod since it doesn't fit with the theme of the game."
I honestly would think it hilarious to see a team of furries in their furry suits piloting a giant ship with ears getting cut apart by Squeegy's Space Kraken.
I honestly would think it hilarious to see a team of furries in their furry suits piloting a giant ship with ears getting cut apart by Squeegy's Space Kraken.
Its never worth seeing teams of furries in anything.
Its never worth seeing teams of furries in anything.
Even if it involves combat? I mean, we aren't talking anthropomorphic characters. I'm talking someone attached ears and a tail to their suit with duct tape. And there is a bunch of them on a ship. And they all are super serious about it. Then you rip the ship apart. Good times ahead if you ask me.
I would rather never have to hear anyone RPing furries over server chat ever.
I despise furries.
It's basically a compromise for beastiality.
Furries should be illegal.
furries are weird and gross and i dont like them
In their defense nothing like that should be illegal
its just an obnoxious fetish for anyone who isn't into it
because they think their 'struggles' are the same as lgbts lol
nodachi dont interrupt me again >:(
