I tried but to no avail. Anyway, my contribution to this CoM business is that it would indeed be an annoying feature, that was my only gripe with corneroids, it takes the fun out of building and flying. Anyway, I believe that the calculatiions for CoM are already ingame, it's jsut the way that Thrusters are programmed. I tried to record a video but Space Engineers crashed every time I enabled PlayClaw but it appears that Machine Guns placed on the end of a long stick, will create torque and make the whole thing spin. This leads me to believe that Thrusters could well be made to rely on placement around centre of mass but it is just currently disabled.

That would just mean that you get more force/thruster efficiency with balanced ship. I don't see why anyone would complain if it is done right. Most people make ships that would make sense anyway. The game is pretty much about design and that involves countering problems with bad designs.
Hey I made a quick turret (on a workshop save, the rest is not mine)
how many blocks does the radius of a gravity generator cover?
how many blocks does the radius of a gravity generator cover?
idk but testing it would be easy make huge platform, stick grav gen in, walk away while colouring every block you pass until there's no more gravity
Hey Darth Veger, has there been any talk about releasing an API for modders? Any hints as to what tools might be available or when? I have volumetric life-support kinda working in matlab and I'd like to try it somewhere "real"
idk but testing it would be easy make huge platform, stick grav gen in, walk away while colouring every block you pass until there's no more gravity
should be 31 blocks according to wiki
should be 31 blocks according to wiki
yeah seems about right. i've used the conflicting gravity within the 31 blocks to put together a fake centrifuge: [thumb]http://cloud-3.steampowered.com/ugc/469799833936839506/516DECC64BF71029032A48AF1045D7AD7572C5DB/1024x575.resizedimage[/thumb] [thumb]http://cloud-4.steampowered.com/ugc/469799833936880817/CEB79742F440D5B2BA9970DBF9A1E61705BEB6E3/1024x575.resizedimage[/thumb] i've used the conflicting areas of the gravity generators to make each side seem like it's got the right angle for the gravity, so even if you're walking on the angled blocks it'll still look exactly the same as being on the flat ones. the transition between the multiple block angles is very smooth if i do say so myself, but because i'm extremely incompetent the last two sides i built (the top and upper right ones in relation to the red ship) don't function as well, and there's a bit of a mid-zone between them where it looks like you're walking uphill. the scaffolding connecting the sides probably won't be there in the final thing, it's just to help me orientate myself. i'll replace it with a rotating bit in the center to give the proper centrifuge effect - obviously a hexagonal centrifuge wouldn't work very well as the gravity would just pool in the corners, but unless we get circular bits it's the best i can do. i might also put a bunch of very high-powered reflector lights on the centerpiece to make it into a weird day/night cycle as it rotates. i'll also almost definitely extend it to be longer so that the sides can have more things on them - at the moment they're about thirty blocks wide, which doesn't really fit the scale of the rest of it i think. overall i'm pretty chuffed with it so far. it's the biggest project i've taken yet.
Doors are so finicky when you're moving, I closed all the doors on my cruiser and decided to go for a joy ride, the fucking doors shifted out into space rather than remaining doors.
Imagine if blocks with thrusters pressed up and blasting in their faces actually started to glow and dislodge/warp. That would be a damn neat detail.
Imagine boarding ships that use thrusters to melt their way into a ship's hull. Latch on with landing pads, full reverse thrust, and GLORP, new entry way.
Imagine boarding ships that use thrusters to melt their way into a ship's hull.
Imagine if blocks with thrusters pressed up and blasting in their faces actually started to glow and dislodge/warp. That would be a damn neat detail.
No no no external thrusters anywhere except the back are really ugly and I hate them.
here's pics of random ships i never finished or just ones i forgot to post (updated version of one i already posted here) LIVIN THE AMERICAN DREAM added some stuff on the default small ship
Tried to get a similar aesthetic to the Helios in a small ship, and I got this, Prometheus Heavy Fighter Flies surprisingly well despite being a heavy ass brick due to having a shitload of reactors and thrusters strapped on. I can't seem to get the hang of making a light weight ship that still looks cool.

I've been putting extra storage cases even on my combat ships to hold ammo, just in case.
No no no external thrusters anywhere except the back are really ugly and I hate them.
Not if done right. I've seen a lot of ships that tastefully incorporate thrusters for all axes of movement in places besides the ship's aft.
Ammo tho. It's not currently implemented, but I imagine it will be eventually. I've been putting extra storage cases even on my combat ships to hold ammo, just in case.
storage can likely replace a lot of the reactors on the ship, right now I think the power generation is a bit over kill - the ship only hits about 55% of total power when pulling a maximum turn with all thrusters on.
Does the number of gyroscopes actually have any impact on your ship's maneuvering, or can you just stick one of them on and call it good?
Does the number of gyroscopes actually have any impact on your ship's maneuvering, or can you just stick one of them on and call it good?
Yes, but due to their weight, the law of diminishing returns shows up after 4 or 5 gyros for normal sized small ships. The same is not true for large ships. 7000 tons could use 40-50+ gyros easy.
Is there fuel in the game (will there be)? I thought they were just some fictional "put in energy, receive thrust" sort of deal that doesn't work irl. But yeah you could theoretically hit things with the exhaust from much further than the visible exhaust effect lol.
I just want to point out that ionizing engines have been around since the sixties, and they are very much the "put energy in, receive thrust" sort of deal.
Ion Engines are super slow as dicks though aren't they
Ion Engines are super slow as dicks though aren't they
Slower than dicks. But they're essentially free.
Ion Engines are super slow as dicks though aren't they
Only because we don't have any kind of sustainable fusion technology to make ion engines on a larger scale with more force behind them.
I just want to point out that ionizing engines have been around since the sixties, and they are very much the "put energy in, receive thrust" sort of deal.
There is still a reaction mass, however efficient the engine is at using it. [editline]20th January 2014[/editline] If you don't believe me, first sentence:
An ion thruster is a form of electric propulsion used for spacecraft propulsion that creates thrust by accelerating ions.
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ion_thruster

I love making small large-ships. [t]http://cloud-2.steampowered.com/ugc/505828638823877267/1A8BBD3A08FF553E33AF19DCACB0868D5613F396/[/t] They're so cozy and nimble, while being extremely lightweight and efficient. I could make 8 of these with the materials that went into my 7000t ship; 8 vs 1 is not a cheery prospect. I have a feeling much of survival mode will revolve around ships of this size, for better or worse, unless mining/construction is friendlier than I expect. [editline]20th January 2014[/editline] I hope for ramp-shaped hull pieces though. Like I reallyyyyy hope that's something the devs plan on doing.

I really hope we get large drills/the ability to control ship parts on motors. I have such nice ideas but having all this stuff on small ships only doesn't help.

I really hope the next update or two adds in controls of rotors in a much better way.
