alright, im gonna go ahead and start a facepunch-only server. cuz apparently half of the people i come across do obviously annoying things like take the biggest ship in the map and fly the fuck away, copy and chuck ships at everything, or shoot your ship with the handheld overpowered machinegun after they lose a dogfight or just randomly for the express purpose of being a dick.
im not sure this is self promotion or whatever, but yah. not really big enough to go into games in progress, so ere goes.
it'll be a facepunch server, BYOS (bring your own ship), spess duels or all our war, build server, or destruction server, whatever. beacons on your ships please, give someone who just spawned there ship about 10 or 20 seconds to fly away before you gun them down. etc.
you know, just general courtesy. in space. ya dig?
if you want to join add me on steam: bob4life10
then just join my game in progress.
and like, space i guess
it'll be up for an hour or 2, just to test the waters and see how much my internet can handle. if we get enough people in here il start up a group chat in steam and we can all communicate and stuff like social little astronauts

it ranges from late to past midnight across the us.
wait, YOU live in the US, what are you doing.
A FP Space Engineers Steam group sounds like a good idea.

dude, 10 pm is my 3pm.
besides, man. like, SPACE
well, heres the run down so far:
Birdman101 made a giant space lawnmower, Shogoll created a new base and put more artistic effort into his lighthouse then i have on any of my ships ever, and my ship PoS1 has been deep spaced and now serves as a beaconed satellite probing deep space.
and it will never turn off. ever.
so far so good.

Aaand my first ship is done. There was a spinning habitation area originally, but I built the ship too small and it would not have worked.

I messed up that small vessel a bit: I thought one big cube = 2 small cubes in length, so I made everything as compact as possible. But after actually landing in the hangar, I noticed that it's 5 small cubes.
I also need to work on my habit of building everything too small.
About time you went from shit posting to posting something decent.

Hey wait a fucking second, you mean you built that as your first ship and it's already better than mine?
For the 45 degree "solar panels" you have there, it might have worked better to make them attached to rotors that are fixed to 45 degree max and min angles.

I was building stuff since I got my first legos, that's my passion.

These are radiators (the bottom orange ones), for radiating heat from reactors as infrared radiation (don't quote me on that). In the vacuum of space, heat can't go anywhere, a a ship without them will just melt until every last bit of equipment stops producing heat. Spacesuits also have a web of cooling pipes around the astronaut.
Thanks for the tip, though!

Except with those radiators set up like that, won't it, if it's near any sort of sun, simply absorb vast amounts of heat from the two that are closest to flat-on from the sun, while the other two radiate heat? The best solution would be sets of two radiators that can rotate in order to maintain a minimal profile to the sun.

I don't think they work that way. Since the ones on the ISS are always seen by the sun. Of course they gather some heat, but radiate much more. You can read about them in depth here if you want to know the workings: http://science.nasa.gov/science-news/science-at-nasa/2001/ast21mar_1/
Apart from that, however, it is a damn fine looking ship
By the way, have the developers mentioned anything about velocity vectors? (a secondary crosshair that shows the direction you're moving right now)

Oh I see what you did there, something like windows put on a 45 degree rotor might also work for that kind of purpose, like a pretend finned heat sink.
I usually pretend that future spess magic gets rid of the heat though, exposed radiator elements are one of the big obstacles in space combat, since it's practically impossible to make a combat effective ship that has to have crucial components exposed by design - for combat oriented ships I usually go without.

That's true. Radiators and overexposed captain's bridge are the first things that will get blown off. Speaking of real life terms, there could be a door and a piston mechanism that will expose the radiator while not in fight. Or there could be inline radiators as part of the structure. They can also be simply hidden behind a shield pointed in the direction of the enemy if we're in the universe where combat doesn't involve small fighters, only huge ships millions of miles away.
I like how Mass Effect handled heat radiation in combat. The ship basically had giant thermal batteries of sorts, and in combat their radiator systems are powered off and heat shunted to these batteries. Then after a period of time, the crew roasts alive.

That's awesome. I hope different kind of radiators will be added to space engineers to complete the holy trinity: Source of power, consumer of power, waste heat from power. This would be a great penalty for spamming reactors.

As usual, I think heat production should be optional, or better yet, a mod. Remember, heat production and combat aren't fun. I get the feeling the majority of SE players wouldn't appreciate it. I certainly wouldn't.

I doesn't have to be huge panels. Just a part like reactor/gyroscope/container.

space garbage truck reporting in
Made a very basic spaceplane to put inside my ship, and encountered a bug: When I was close (about 5m) to my huge ship with another ship landed inside it (doesn't matter if it had power or not), like on the first screenshot, all my small engines suddenly stopped working. Thrust was visible, power was draining, but only the big engines could move me. I should report that.

Thaaaat would be for stealth, not combat. Why would they stop venting heat in combat? Also "crew being roasted alive" being phrased as a feature seems... odd.
A spacecraft that is producing excess heat and no way to radiate will eventually kill its crew and destroy itself.
I'm reminded of the climax of Footfall.
Quick someone mod in giant tentacled elephant aliens.

I think that's already similar to what happens when you turn off inertia dampening.
Wait, I see what you're saying; I don't think there is anything of that sort, but it sure would be handy, especially when maneuvering without inertia dampers.

its a cool "realistic" thing, not a gigantic sci-fi thing
Game needs less ambient light (darker shadows). You're in space, likely encased within several inches of metal. Game should rely more on Artificial and natural light sources rather than sourceless light that keeps ships from being dark.
It'd work wonders on interiors to have more dramatic lighting.
Game also needs more thrusters. Square thrusters , rectangular thrusters and corner/diagonal thrusters. Sometimes it just looks awful to have huge firebarrels awkwardly sticking out of the side of the ship.

then inset them?
