Game needs less ambient light (darker shadows). You're in space, likely encased within several inches of metal. Game should rely more on Artificial and natural light sources rather than sourceless light that keeps ships from being dark. It'd work wonders on interiors to have more dramatic lighting. Game also needs more thrusters. Square thrusters , rectangular thrusters and corner/diagonal thrusters. Sometimes it just looks awful to have huge firebarrels awkwardly sticking out of the side of the ship.
Not to say I don't want more compact RCS-like thrusters myself. Also, I think that asteroids provide a lot of ambient light in that game. It would be fun to have to build stations to keep your play area illuminated, but it should be done AFTER they make reflectron lights less of a FPS drain.
it would be nice if you could combine thrusters and rotors into a single block so that you only have the one thruster, but you can rotate it to any direction. then you could build extremely compact ships for navigating asteroid/station tunnels with ease, in exchange for less speed and power [editline]22nd January[/editline] and you could use them as RCS blocks too
A spacecraft that is producing excess heat and no way to radiate will eventually kill its crew and destroy itself.
Yeah I know that, but the phrasing makes it sound like an advertisement. "When engaged in combat, your frigate will disengage all eat radiating devices and store its heat internally in specially designed heat sinks. Then, as the battle goes on, your crew will automatically be cooked alive by the stored heat, ensuring your victory!"
I want reaction engines where the thrust damages ships so I can make a ship that would drift to someone at highspeed, and then engage the reaction engine and split that fucker in half while matching velocities.
Thaaaat would be for stealth, not combat. Why would they stop venting heat in combat? Also "crew being roasted alive" being phrased as a feature seems... odd.
Space radiators are usually massive fragile objects with high surface area, which makes them super easy to damage in combat, and when they break you're super fucked, so most space combat designs that are realistic have a way of covering them up to protect them in battle, at the expense of having less thermal regulation.
did anyone say realistic welcome aboard the ISS Asimov more screens, interior & workshop save tomorrow, too tired
awesome I may too try a 'realistic', skyscraper deck design sometime
holy damn that detail
Those realistic designs don't look very maneuverable, they look cool as semi stationary stations though.
Those realistic designs don't look very maneuverable, they look cool as semi stationary stations though.
what is stopping them from being maneuverable?
ramps make for fairly good solar panels
I made a space station for copy pasting online, so it purposefully avoids using rotors or any moving parts. I'm calling it Pantheon for now, but it really should be named FPS Destroyer, especially when the reflector lights are on. nailed it
Those realistic designs don't look very maneuverable, they look cool as semi stationary stations though.
Those are from-point-1-to-point-2 ships anyway, they won't be doing much of that [editline]22nd January 2014[/editline] oh and forgot to post the wonders of public servers
You know what would be really goddamn nice? If the auto-save feature delayed saving if it detected that a button is being pressed. Say you're holding Ctrl for a long line of blocks, and just as you're about to let go of the mouse button, auto-save pops up. Bam, you have to line up that block spawn again. Or suppose you're flying around your in-construction ship, and auto-save pops up. You still keep flying for the duration of the auto-save as if the button was being held down, so by the time it releases you from its vise-grip, you've flown stupidly far from your ship. It's minor things, but they're fucking annoying.
It's minor things, but they're fucking annoying.
Saving paused the game before, not sure why it stopped doing that You know what's really annoying? The god damn jetpack inertia Give me my noclip
I never use auto save feature, I just obsessively save every 10 minutes or after I make any real desirable progress on my designs.
I'll be trying a go at a ship like Blindsight's Theseus sometime soon. Realistic ship that has a carapace design around the typical tower design of ships.
I'll be trying a go at a ship like Blindsight's Theseus sometime soon. Too bad we can't make Orion drives with explosives or I'd ask someone to make the Michael from Footfall.
I hope bob doesnt mind, but I used one of his ships to test my new sawblades
Too bad we can't make Orion drives with explosives or I'd ask someone to make the Michael from Footfall.
When they give us spaceship building tools, we weaponize them. But when they give us weapons, we...spaceshipize them?
I hope bob doesnt mind, but I used one of his ships to test my new sawblades
THAT is amazing. it solves the issue with ramming: Movement. Those blades contantly move and continue to rip the ship apart. speed isn't even a need with this. as a plus, it also looks cool.

If you slowly start eating a ship, the sawblades catch on the first thruster or other tough block in the way. It needs a good ram to initially get everything softened up, then they can rip out all the internal stuff.
-snip
I wonder if you could use gravity generators and asteroid-powered ships to make "realistic" tower designs... Have the craft powered only by gravity, and set up to fly directly into a "net" of sorts at the other end. No turning, no engines, no frills. Is that stupid? That feels stupid. But this IS Space Engineers.
