I made an outstandingly crude version of a four bar crank-rocker quick return mechanism to test as a launcher.

I eye balled all of the link lengths and didn't perform any proper synthesis when building it, so it jams up a little bit and doesn't really do its job properly, but powered off a single rotor at maximum torque and 30RPM, I managed to grab on the link end one time with the stock small ship, and it launched me to 61.4m/s immediately.
I think the idea has some potential for refinement.
Man, people have done such cool things with rotors. It would be awesome if they added pistons.
Also, while 61 m/s is a nice speed, I wish the speed limit was higher.
If your ship has two hulls side-by-side a la the latest one you posted, try spreading the hulls apart, rather than keeping them inline with the rest of the ship.
You could also pull a Galactica and spam external bulkheads.
I just saw this post. The Galactica wasn't supposed to have its bulkheads exposed. In the beginning of the series it was being decommissioned, and as such the plates and other things were taken off to be reused. It was shown fully clad in armor in Blood and Chrome.

I don't know whether it's just how badass galactica/adama was, or how weak the cylon army was, but it's fucking awesome they beat the balls off the cylons with a half strength, armorless battlestar.
I always wondered why there was THAT much greeble in the re-imagined series :v:.
Nonetheless, adding bulkheads like that is a great way to keep ships interesting, provided you do it right.

because there is a disturbing lack of sci-fi's with lots of lore. There's starwars, star trek and.... what else has a lot of backstory?
[editline]28th January 2014[/editline]
Plus the whole "it's happened before and will happen again" thing means both the original galactica and galactica 1980 are canon along with the reimagined series. So all that fluff is part of the reimagined fluff.

Dune, Foundation, there's more but I can't think of any atm. There's actually quite a lot of Scifi with a lot of lore, you just have to look beyond tv and movies.

Babylon 5, Dune, Literally everything H.G. Wells ever made.
[editline]27th January 2014[/editline]
The Ringworld series.

Hence why I go out of my way to write as much backstory as possible as often as possible.
That thing I said about building an entire universe around a spaceship?
I've done that about seven times now.
Someone told me to remake a video but I forgot to save the quick return launcher, so I rebuilt a slightly worse one.

Demonstrates overall operation though, also demonstrates how bad these things work when you don't bother to figure out proper lengths and stuff.
i like making lights spin with rotors.
i am a simple man.
Started a new ship. Powered by chemical engines, for transfering people and resources to the Moon (almost wrote "and minmus") and back. There's going to be a lunar module for descending docket do it. It will probably look like the one in 2001.
Currently done, from left to right: Antennas, fuel tanks and first set of maneuver engines.

makes me want to do a long ship like the avatar one or something :v:

I thought you could see gman while traveling along the trams before that?
So I figured out what the more artsy people might end up doing.
I think Squeegy has some competition.
Who wants to donate a sizeable (read: giant) ship for my space mantis to pick apart? Pretty is a requirement, hangars are a bonus. Sensible looking internals and lots of use of 'interior wall' are also a must.

He corrects himself a few seconds later.

That's Blood and Chrome though, not Razor, IIRC. Galactica was still being deconned in Razor.

on the right, its not ~giant~ though and uses quite a lot of those ramps which don't deform yet :C

Rotor flail hue
Me, Gentry and mbbird all took turns trying to land on the end while it was still active after it flew off a few thousands KM.
Needless to say the results varied.
trying to capture a spinning, flailing monstrosity as it sped through the void was interesting

ah, yes, you're absolutely right. I'm sorry, I was really tired last night.
[editline]28th January 2014[/editline]
also has anyone else noticed a MASSIVE performance boost since the last update? it's fucking awesome.
So I was checking out some stuff on reactors and I noticed something on the SE wiki.
"Reactors are powered by uranium ingots. 1L uranium ingots powers 68.76 GW/s or 0.0191 GW/h"
...umm does nobody understand that GW stands for gigawatts and that watts are a unit of power and not a unit of energy?
This energy misunderstanding by a bunch of SE players is starting to piss me off.
It's GWs and GWh. Those are units of energy. GW/s is the equivalent of energy acceleration

imagine being mad over slashes.

Pretty sure that a 1 Watt = Joule per a second. (Which would still make the SE wiki wrong)
Wouldn't it just be GW?

That still doesn't make sense. GWs^-1 is the same as a Joule. GWs is what you're calling "acceleration".
I hate the use of slashes in general when it comes to writing units, indices make so much more sense when balancing SI units.
