Personally, i hate the scripted stuff he's doing.
The game is so bare at the moment, I can understand them giving it a little twist.
Come back after a while to see what's new, once more catch the tail end of some quality NoDachi drama. Oh you guys. :v:
i usually start with the head of the ship and build from there
I build ships like a skeleton, starting with the core/spine and building a frame out from that, then filling that out.
I usually decide on a general profile I want from each axis and work them together in my head, then plot out a skeleton. After that I do the interior of the ship and work openings such as doors and windows into the external structure. Once that's finished, I'll go to placing equipment and work the thrusters into the external structure where they might look best, then finally fill in the outer hull. While I'm doing that, I might add in some support structures between the interior and the exterior hull, so that it feels sturdier in my mind while piloting it. I can't feel good about flying a ship that has an interior that isn't flush with the exterior and is just floating inside, it has to have supports to not feel silly.
I found this on the space engineers subreddit, I thought it was very cool idea.

I wish I was smart :(
That video up there was painful. Nine minutes of running around trying to load guns individually and track down fuel before anything interesting happens, and what happens is insanely laggy and awkward "combat". This game does have a ways to go...

Now, back to space engineers, like this thread should be: How does everyone here start building their ships? I'm curious what methods you guys use, I usually start with an outline and work from there.

It's worked wonderfully so far.
I like just starting with some kind of base shape for the hull and working from there.

For example, I started with the half-jellybean shape, added another smaller half-jellybean on the bottom (for hanger and 2 of the 4 Titan engines). The big heavy armor bulge at the front contains the magazines for the two front gravity gun tubes. The tubes are next to each other but the magazines are one in front of the other because of space constraints. There are two turrets on top with missile launchers. The basic shape I start with always ends up getting modified in places to accommodate stuff, and I usually like the end result. It's more interesting than a smooth, unbroken shape.
That ship also has 4 broadside grav gun tubes on each side, with aiming stations next to them for accurate fire. Powered by 12 large reactors. Honestly, once I built all the grav guns, added the engines, added the reactors, and built a CIC, there wasn't much space left inside the thing to fill up. Normally I get stuck with a bunch of useless, empty rooms.
It's amazing how the stuff those guys build to appear for all of about 2 minutes and then get blown up/ is never seen again is considerably better than the stuff I build when I'm trying my best :v:
maybe the thread would be better if people stopped trying to climb up my butt, there isn't room for everyone.
To boldly go where no one has gone before gets a whole new meaning.

NoDachi Opinion violation detected. Section 1 paragraph 2: Muh Realism (don't build ships that only work with thruster damage off).
NoDachi Opinion violation 2 detected. Section 1 paragraph 5: Space Engineers is not an mmo (don't build ships that can carry large crews or are intended for RP).
NoDachi Opinion violation 3 detected. Section 1 paragraph 1: Oh, you have an opinion too? (don't have a opinion thats different to NoDachis).
Ever since the title was changed, I've wanted to build a ship that's:
-Asymmetrical, with at least 70% of the structure being entirely cosmetic
-Entirely light-armour with weak, thin sections throughout the spine of the ship
-Engine nacelles mounted on via landing gears and maneuvering thrusters mounted on motors, all of which need individual crewmen.
-The entire central structure is dedicated to a dome housing the word "OPINION", written out of small reactors
-All inside a ship the size of the moon
can you stop already
can you stop already
I just put the last nail in his coffin
personally I think it's to a ship's detriment if it needs thruster damage off, simply because you can't paste it into worlds where it's activated
not that it really matters, but it's more applicable if you plan on putting it on the workshop or bringing it to a server

All 100+ star trek ships on the workshop by me and my friends + other are like that so they are functional with thruster damage off. + I think theres probably going to be a star trek server when dedicated servers are in SE.
Hide yo drugs, its the space police!

When AI comes out, part of me wants the space-law-enforcement to use those ships.
Btw all these fun gizmos are deployable with one press of P.
Workshop upload coming soon.
Guns don't work yet, because guns on the motors aren't technically connected to the cockpit. Blame developers.

Holy shit that ship.
Do the guns also retract as well or no?
Holy shit that ship.

Nope, not yet. Maybe when they add grouping.
I see the thread name changed, wondered why and then saw NoDachi was banned for awhile.
Still boggles the mind that people are surprised when he posts like that. I've seen many times him posting like an asshat around the forums. :v:
Still on topic. Did they ever lower the creation time and buff effectiveness for Solar-panels? And do they plan to buff the large grinders so to speak? (I'm currently half the way around the world from my rig and as such don't have access the to game for a couple more months so I'm somewhat out of the loop.)
Now we need a ballsocket block!
Shitty promo!

PC Games.
that video is a fucking national treasure.
It's also hilarious because the vehicle actually handles like a fucking hard boiled turd

I did my research, the handling is as close to real life police vehicles as possible.
[sp] The ship is purely a pretty flashy thingamajig that is nice to look at, since the whole thing is basically a giant spring toy, It's really hard to make it handle well. Maybe if I added more weight to it, or more reactors. Feel free to try it yourself [/sp]

Somewhat like yours, I just wanted to try fold out weapons
you did a better job hiding those missile launchers in the back than I can be bothered to do

i'm not trashing the ship just so you know, it's incredible, easily the best ship ever made IMO
its just
well
you can't turn it
which is a byproduct of the spinning rotors, of course, and it's only 9k kG

also more people should download my steam workshop stuff
please and thank you
