Are there servers, how do they work, and does FP have one?

Nope, dedicated servers aren't in yet.
Nope, dedicated servers aren't in yet.
So if I wanted to play with someone I'd have to host a server?
Really tempted to buy the game
Dedicated servers are planned, so you may as well. There's plenty to do until then.
How are you guys building such nice and neat things inside of asteroids? I've been using missiles and explosives to clear it out and it results in a mess that my structures often don't fit in too well. Mining it all out by hand takes ages, and using a ship is marginally faster. I guess with more than one person in mining ships it goes faster than one dude, but if you guys have any tricks up your sleeves let me know.
We didn't dig any of this, the asteroid is generated that way :v:
I'm really disappointed at how explosives just destroy blocks instead of actually pushing things away and shit. It's really really unsatisfying to use explosives in this game for anything. It just like, things disappear in a cloud of smoke and fire, ehh.
shock waves don't exist in a vaccum; or at least I wouldnt think so.
a good read:

I mostly wish the rocks stuck around and became collectable when you blow up a chunk of asteroid. I was so sad when my rocket launching miner ship wouldn't actually work

Neither does a lot of stuff in this game. Some kind of shockwave should be added just to make explosives more fun.
The developers are very silent in the skype chat recently, this is either good news or bad news :v:

They sort of could, if you imagine the remains of the explosive getting propelled outwars, be it gas, liquid, or chunks of metal.
Lot's of small pieces could push you
That's dissapointing. So basically, explosions are, if possible, really lame looking?
That's dissapointing. So basically, explosions are, if possible, really lame looking?
Not necessarily, they just explode, destroying blocks within a certain radius.
I meant in real life
I meant in real life
Oh. In real life, space explosions are actually pretty interesting.
There was a series of nuclear tests in the mid-60s/70s where the US government launched a series of nuclear missiles into near-space.
Since there's no atmosphere to separate the resulting gasses, they all just sort of radiate from the center instead. It makes giant spheroid explosions.

I thought that was an explosion ON THE PLANET at first glance.
I meant in real life
not really, the explosion would cause bits of metal and stuff to ablate away, acting a bit like an ablative plasma rocket, pushing out fragments in lots of directions with a slowly expanding shell of smoke and gases left
They sort of could, if you imagine the remains of the explosive getting propelled outwars, be it gas, liquid, or chunks of metal.

Let's not forget that its entire explosive radius won't be the same temperature, so the object being blown up won't just completely vaporize, and would act as the medium of kinetic energy and be forced away. Space engineers doesn't have it close.
If Nukes are detonated in low Earth orbit, do they act like an EMP?
Im surprised noone tried to mine sculptures out of the asteroids yet. Or am i sadly mistaken?
If Nukes are detonated in low Earth orbit, do they act like an EMP?
A nuclear detonation in the upper atmosphere disturbs the ionosphere, which is what causes the EM cascading effect.

I've seen an asteroid with a pair of Groucho Marx glasses, if that counts.

Ah that was it, I was nearly right. :v:

My current Salvaging rig on the starting station, a grinder blade with 3 way grinders (once its gone all the way through all you have to do is reverse the rotor and it'll cut back the opposite way, aftermoving the ship closer to the blades with the built in pulley system thing)

fun fact, that's actually a gif but the lag is so bad from the grinders that it appears motionless
Nah suprisingly 60 grinders aren't too bad on my system, especially when even though all of them are turned on, not all of them grind at the same time.
my previous setup of 100 grinders though? man did that lag like fuck.
Do you guys ever play around with the gravity in your ships so it's very weird to navigate? I made a large, vertical ship that travels lengthwise because the orientation at the cockpit area is different. You have to climb up stairs to get to the top, then walk up the wall to get to the top/front of the ship
This whole explosion thing has me wondering: Since there'd basically be an atmosphere in capital ships, in terms of movies, not SE, wouldn't those dramatic explosions actually make sense?
i feel like oxygen igniting would be a thing
[editline]13th May 2014[/editline]
that'd make a great title for a dissertation

It sounds right in concept, but the reality is that as you lower the pressure of oxygen, the less flammable it becomes. On space-craft that use a pure oxygen atmosphere, the pressure is kept at about 4-5 psi, which is virtually non flammable. In the event of an emergency decompression, the pressure would only drop further inside the cabin and in the volume of gas venting into space. So really, no, there wouldn't be any big movie explosion as a result of the atmosphere of the vessel.

Except you don't use a pure oxygen atmosphere.
