Funny thing about shearing and mechanical stress and whatnot: It's not in the game (obviously) and it would make it a whole lot more difficult if it was, but for a while, I was convinced that they had added it in an update and not included it in the patch notes. You see, the ship I use as a derelict interceptor (or rather used; since the turret update I've relegated it to shipyard duty as I design an armored successor) consists of engines, gyros, solar panels, etc. clustered at the back with a boom arm extending out front with the landing gear on the end. The boom arm consisted of unfinished steel armor blocks, as I didn't need them to be fully formed and I couldn't spare the metal at the time. This in mind, I went to intercept an incoming vessel and got myself up to full speed. When I tried slowing down to intercept the vehicle, I also turned in a kind of arc, but suddenly the boom arm just detached - oddly, right at the boundary between finished and unfinished blocks. I reloaded the save, went to intercept, same thing happened. So I figured unfinished blocks would be damaged by stress at their boundaries with finished blocks, which I thought was annoying and cool at the same time. Nope, turned out that it was collateral damage from thruster heat, because apparently thrusters also damage blocks to the side of their flare path in addition to blocks directly in front of them. That was just annoying to find out.

Explosions should just work like they do in SS13, with three different sized radii for differently levels of damage.
Explosions should just work like they do in SS13, with three different sized radii for differently levels of damage.
They do to an extent here if you refer to the earlier blast patterns I posted anything still there was at 100% health. Medium armor should be a thing.
http://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=269366840 My shipyard is available on the steam Workshop now I finished my battle ship All the ships are functional most are gravity Drive equipped, the battleship is the only thing that is fully set up with item grouping . Also if anyone can make the main gun look a bit better it looks absolutely comically oversized atm.

On an unrelated note, is there a way to open urls like that in Steam? Since there's no way to copy-paste urls into the Steam community address bar, the workshop search is shite, and i'd rather keep my Steam logins to the client specifically. [editline]10th June 2014[/editline] Well, can't see any way to make the barrel itself less thick short of going for a small ship turret, but I did mess about with the turret housing a little bit to make it smaller, among other quick and minor aesthetic adjustments.
These space nukes everyone is raving about are honestly very underwhelming, the way explosions work in space engineers just make them very unsatisfying to use. Instead of the explosions causing a shock wave it just disappears anything not strong enough to withstand the explosion in its radius of effect. Seeing clean circular cutouts around the center of impact makes exploding things extremely dull and boring. I want to see shit being ripped from the main target and thrown about from the force of the explosion, or at least some visible movement in the craft they hit.
Surely in space, there would be no oxygen to create a shockwave? Sure, the debris would create an expanding cloud (which would be devastating, because it wouldn't stop until it hit something), but no air presumably means no shockwave. I do think they should be improved though, because disappearing blocks is a bit boring.

The only things doing anything in an explosion are the gases pushing things around, the debris, and the heat. If anything, pushing things should be pretty much all an explosion does, with the effect similar to a large collision with more block damage. [editline]10th June 2014[/editline] But then again, I'm neither a physicist, nor have I been to space.

I am very much hoping for more Variety in blocks perhaps some more powerful engines, conventional cannons, medium armor, sleeker cockpits for fighters, maybe even proper torpedoes, while yes mods accomplish that people not having them limits you to what you can do.
I personally don't see the point in more powerful engines (build more?), medium armour (I like having to chose either lightweight paper or super heavy protection - medium would probably just be objectively better in most situations), sleeker cockpits (???) and torps should remain player built.
i wish we had ai. I want to duke it out with some of my ships and so far the only way to do that is to either get someone to fly it online and hope they don't glitch to infinity, or put it way out in the distance, and start it towards your other ship, then jetpack to the other ship and get in and fly towards the first. sigh.
yeah the whole discussion about explosions overlooks the fact that we have a whole arsenal of potential kinetic weaponry and a big ol ape brain to make it work i feel like explosives are kind of a crutch
Got bored, decided to learn how to create webm videos. Shadowplay is also an extraordinarily nifty tool. http://files.1337upload.net/collision-4cac19.webm
sleeker cockpits (???)
The small ship cockpit is pretty bad looking for anything other than utility ships; it's tall and fat - making it an easy target - and it clashes terribly with traditional "space fighter" aesthetic.
I personally don't see the point in more powerful engines (build more?).
A larger and or longer version that delivers more power just consolidating the the 3-4 thrusters into one same thinking of building one large thruster as opposed to a bunch of small ones, not suggesting they just up the power but add another bigger option.
The small ship cockpit is pretty bad looking for anything other than utility ships; it's tall and fat - making it an easy target - and it clashes terribly with traditional "space fighter" aesthetic.
its pretty small considering the size of the player. I don't see how making it ~aerodynamic~ is going to make it not look silly [editline]10th June 2014[/editline]
add another bigger option.
ad infinitum?

But I like the square cube law being a real thing in this game. its a nice softcap and real world problem. Making super large ships being able to hit the 104m/s even quicker doesn't seem too good in my personal opinion. I know its a common request.

It wouldn't even need to have any advantages necessarily, it would just be handy for the sake of super-large builds so that you don't need to use millions of thrusters. I know you don't like large ships, but the fact is some people do, and they'd rather not have their computer be ground to a halt by a few dozen thrusters doing what could be done by one.
I like large ships. I have one that is approaching 20m kg. But to boost their forward speed a bit you could use the old thing known as the gravity drive.
its pretty small considering the size of the player.
I don't know if I want "sleeker" cockpits, but I certainly wouldn't mind a couple more options.
Said it before but more options would be had if you could design your own with a seat and small ship glass. But then you need a way inside to the seat, so it has to get to that scale of something like 15-20 meters long first. Don't start with the (interiors are not meant for small ships!) If its interior thats the equivalent of like 3 large ship blocks in space.
For sideways up/down speed its your designs fault that they are slow. But to boost their forward speed a bit you could use the old thing known as the gravity drive.
Ya my ships do have gravity drives I made a point of ensuring they all do,they also perform quite well.I know how to build ships I am saying it would be better if we had a balanced option for engines for larger ships, especially ones requiring many thrusters as it does cause significant lag.
The small ship cockpit is pretty bad looking for anything other than utility ships; it's tall and fat - making it an easy target - and it clashes terribly with traditional "space fighter" aesthetic.
I think it just looks like a stubby x-wing cockpit windscreen [editline]10th June 2014[/editline] not disagreeing though
i think the main thing with different cockpits is that they lend towards different shapes with your ship, like the low-cut first person one needs glass panels and stuff. like you could have a jet-fighter style one that you place on the top of a small ship instead of the front, and that gives you a full 360 degree view of everything above, behind and in front of you in exchange for not being able to see very far below the horizon.
