In material cost I'd say they're a better acceleration solution, but obviously you'll still want maneuvering thrusters. Not sure about their energy cost comparison.
For energy and material costs, they're one of the best ways to get a large ship up to speed in a decent amount of time
Since always, that's the whole reason gravity drives actually work
And I'm not sure what you mean by adjusting the gravity generator to change projectile trajectories but if you want the save it's right here
Lol I always kind of assumed it does not work on its own ship so I always attached gravgens on separate entities. Too bad, detaching things activating their mass blocks is not actually possible after all
And by adjusting I meant aiming the generator AFTER launching projectiles

If its in range of the gravity gen then yes you can alter its course.
today I built a thinger on a creative server and it didn't get blown up while I was building it
yes I have my render settings turned down, don't hit me

So I was just helping my brother dock two of the newbie ships together via the connectors on the bottom. He is being very methodical, careful, and very very slow while trying to get the things lined up (a habit he probably developed while playing a bunch of Kerbal Space Program). Just when he was about to get close enough for the magnets of the connectors to kick in, a micro-meteoroid flies in at mach 1 and crashes into the connector on his ship, disintegrating it instantly. He sat there for a few moments, unable to parse what exactly just happened, while I on the other hand almost fell out of my chair laughing so hard.
Just before this ship catastrophe, me and my friend had excavated a crevasse in the dark side of a large asteroid in which our base was built into the side of. We were noticing that the only refinery we had was working very slowly, and we were in high demand for multiple processed metals, so the natural conclusion was to build more refineries! Knowing from hard experience that these meteroids --which our two station guns have a hard time shooting down-- are not picky with their targets and will destroy anything they happen to hit violently and instantly. We opt to carve a buffer in the rock and use that as a sort of invincible wall to protect our new refineries which we intent to place on the other side. After spending about an hour carving into the rock (by hand) and shipping out the leftover contents (also by hand), we are ready to lay in the foundation and carve in some plumbing for the conveyors to connect to our main system. Everything is going perfectly! We place the foundation as a collection of girders and framework, and place the basics of an un-constructed refinery on top. Nice and comfy and a perfect fit. From here, we spend a few moments trying to figure out just where exactly the connection port of the refinery even is so we can place a conveyor hub just under it. We figure it out, fully build the conveyor hub, and connect and construct the conveyors so it is all connected to the system. Finally! We are now able to start constructing our second refinery. Just as we both go back to collect resources from our storage, a meteroid flies in and WHAM. The only working refinery we have gets obliterated, and all the contents are thrown everywhere across the platform and into space.
This game can be such a tease sometimes. I love it.
Also, is it possible to even transfer resources from one connector to the other? I was trying before and they would lock up, but they wouldn't send resources to the other network. I was trying to tell my brother this while he was doing his thing, but I guess he just wanted to see for himself. What I always did was just attach a bunch of dumpers to my mining ship, and drop them via gravity into a collector that would be strapped on top of a conveyor-hub.
edit: Oh so it turns out you have to lock the connectors together with P before resources can be allowed to transfer.
Alright.... I'm working on a ship nicknamed 'The Maw' right now.... don't think it will be on the same level of scale as squeegy or birdman, but it might be on the same level of complexity. To give you an idea of what its supposed to be, its pretty much a space scarrlaac pit.
EDIT:
And it's a success! At least with small ships, it can pretty much eat anything; large ships are a bit more of a problem, as it ate half way through the blue ship before getting its grinders destroyed by going too fast. I will post screenshots when my main computer gets internet back.
So you guys recall that you can use rotors to go from a small ship to a large one? I had a hunch I decided to test today. If we can go from big to small, wouldn't we be able to do the opposite? Turns out I was right, you totally can.

Now if only I could get the damn thing to stop shaking around so much.
I've tried to use rotors to open and close doors on hangars but they keep swinging around.
It's also very satisfying to make a giant swinging door crush a ship
Woo, recovered my save! :D
so is there a fp creative server? :v:
so is there a fp creative server? :v:
Not until the MP netcode is fixed, there isn't.
but i want to dogfight

Have you had problems with the large rotor just snapping off and floating away if you move too quickly? 'Cause that keeps happening to everything I make using the rotor trick like that
Have you had problems with the large rotor just snapping off and floating away if you move too quickly? 'Cause that keeps happening to everything I make using the rotor trick like that
actually no. I haven't enabled the rotor to test it, but if you just keep it off, it sticks pretty well.

so you're saying there wont ever be one
I really hope groupings save properly next update.
so you're saying there wont ever be one
are you saying they're never gonna improve it
nothing gets past you eh :v:
Its been said before, but this game could really use some AI, maybe not top priority but it would make sense as soon as the faction update is out, thats what drew me so much to starmade originally was the fact that you could encounter pirates. Plus the fact that we already know the engine could support AI (Because of minerwars) would already shave off a bit of groundwork. It'd just be nice to have to defend yourself and it would affect ship design because you would have to adapt to what faction you are being attacked with and the ships they have.
The closest thing to enemies are empty ships with guns set to target anything moving. Thinking about it now, I could just push a giant heavy armor block and use it as a decoy and cover for destroying armed ships

If you have a stable ship and can aim well you can snipe turrets outside their targetting range miniguns work well because they damage them without destroying them are causing warheads to go off.

much like the npcs in starmade, the npcs in SE will probably be point-and-go dummy AI that crashes into things, asteroids being an example. In starmade they would fall onto planets and you could finish them off as they spun around on the ground helpless to do anything
If am right all NPC ships turrets radius is 600-700 so you can set yours to the max of 800 and just sit outside there range and allow your turrets to pick off there turrets turn off yours then go inside for what you want.

I don't think the NPC ships in Starmade have enough thrust to lift off the planets with the default ships. I've accidentally gone through planet atmospheres in my largeish ships and gotten pinned to the ground :v:

Turrets aim for center of mass, not other turrets, I thought?
What does a small basic minig ship need? I quite new to this, so what ive added so far is : 2 drills infront of cockpit, a gyro and a ore detector. (i want the drills to automaticaly tranfer ore to a small storage ill place in the back of the ship.

You'll need small connector tubes routing from the small port on the drills into the port on the storage box.
So I thought I'd download Starmade again after having not played it for ages, just after completing the tutorial, I get attacked by like 7 ships...

Don't forget a light or two. And cover it in heavy armor; little mining ships take a beating. And put a connector at the back to make unloading the ore easy.
Here's an early version of the best small mining ship my unimaginative self has managed to make. I recolored it yellow and named it The Angry Pineapple (per a friend's comment about its appearance). Oh, be sure to turn off the drills before getting out, or else meet the meat grinder.
