This game is a lot of fun as is, but I can't wait for additional interactivity.
It's one of those things where the hours just seem to vanish off the clock.
does anybody else build the interior of their ships first then the exterior or am I just retarded?
That actually sounds like an interesting way of doing it, I'll have to try it next time rather than trying to fit in a interior without accidentally cutting into the exterior.
does anybody else build the interior of their ships first then the exterior or am I just retarded?
I think there's a lot of methods out there; unless you have a very clear plan from the start, then it's just start where it's easiest to get more ideas. I start from the engines, for example.
I've built all my large ships around the engines so far. The problem is that I usually run out of ideas and have no idea how to finish the front of the ship.
Maybe I'm just uncreative but I'm really excited for when we move beyond 'creative mode.' If I build a big-ass ship, I want to be forced to strike a balance between form and function (right now it's 99 percent form). Maybe it's because you can't really do anything with stuff you build yet.

CTR + Middle Mouse to apply as a 3x3 area.

I made a butt ugly but unbeatable fighter
At least thats the idea, the internals are 100% exposed though, so its probably vulnerable to gattling gun fire
But what does that matter if it can outrun absolutely everything else, it doesnt even take the slightest of a dent unless you crash it head on at bad angles
I start my ships with interior, mainly because exterior looks a lot more functional this way.

that's interesting. usually I start with the hanger, then the hallways/rooms, then the bridge. after that I shape the exterior around the interior and then do the engines.
[editline]24th October 2013[/editline]
or rather not always the hanger, but any sort of entrance.
Spent three hours making a ship and it crashes. Reload and it won't let me place any blocks :/
I normally start with the prow and work my way backwards doing the interior and exterior as I move back.
i made a thing :-)

I tried starting with the interior first. And that helped get an idea for size of rooms the layout of the ship. But then I had an awkward looking box that I couldn't make look good. That's the ship I threw at an asteroid.

I so wanna ram my ship into you and watch the insides fly everywhere.
I...wow I just reread that.

It's a date. Your ship or mine?
So, programmable computers might be a thing in Space Engineers.
It's a date. Your ship or mine?
yours, clearly - mine currently lacks a mess hall, and everything except main engineering for that matter :v:
oh my god this game i want it so badly
So, programmable computers might be a thing in Space Engineers.
So it is being space build standalone fuck yeah!
Going back to the SG stuff on the last page, Ha'taks are motherships and the pyramid ship from the movie is apparently it's own class of ship. Then there was Anubis' mothership which made the Ha'taks look like babby toys.

I hope they add Rovers or able-to-make your own cars/vehicles. Would be awesome because then you can make machines with the wheels. (for instance; trains, cars, transports, rollercoasters)
And also the fact that it's "Space Engineers". Which stupid actual space engineer wouldn't have a rover.
I detest building it by hand. I just want some form of 3D editor where I can whip up an immaculate ship in a matter of minutes, provided I have the resources.
Me too. My experience with Gmod soured building by hand. I was hoping that Space Engineers would take the opportunity to add a "3ds max" looking mode where you can use a grid, from multiple perspectives to quickly build your ship. I love building, and especially building with other people - but there's only so much time I want to spend building. I want to get on to mannaing my crew of pilots in battles with other ships.
I want to "design" in SP and destroy stuff in MP. Unfortunately it seems the developers want to insist on realism, and building by hand. They said they will "look into" the max jetpack speed, but don't want it to be unrealistic. Seems they are missing the point about a different "design / build" and "battle / repair / rebuild" stage so I'm going to suggest it over on the forum.
I'm not even sure if they are going to have a duplicator system or not. I'm trying to build a Battlestar Galactica and with the slow tedious bulding, no ability to build an engine and paste it 3 more times I'm going to be spending days on just building the triangle / leaflet shape of the BSG's engines (difficult to make with blocks) before I can get to the hangar bays and front area.
Right now there's no plans for ownership figured out or saving --- you join a persistent server and build there, you cant save your ship seperate from the server and when the power goes out you loose everything (this is just talk im hearing on the forum, they havent tested multiplayer yet). I'm hoping they treat a server as a world to spawn your creations, rather than the creation being tied to the world / server
Well the game is about space survival and what you can accomplish with such difficulties.
Yes but there needs to be a way to at least get schematics / or diagrams in the game (like a reference...) and the ability to copy paste engines and prebuild modules of a ship... that wouldn't violate the rules of the game. Just highlight a set of blocks, press "build duplicate" and then the additional time and resources are calculated. Building on a large scale right now with the included tools are nearly impossible. Even with a multiplayer crew there needs to be some more design tools IMO. ie how do I build multiple detailed fighter ships that are exactly the same? Takes too long to build them one by one.

Well there is a blueprint tab already in the game.
Which I imagine is for saving designs to build those frames you saw the players working on in the alpha vids.
I would be fine if, when you built a ship and spawned it on another server, it built the block scaffolds instead of the actual blocks, and you had to weld/plate it with materials in your inventory. I think that would balance out the "poof, there's a ship" factor while maintaining some sort of ease of use.
Here's a small fighter ship I made using the same color scheme from my other ship. Lots of guns, and goes pretty fast. Handles well.

oh my. That is an absolutely fantastic game, even in such an early stage. I absolutely love this idea and how it is executed. What it lacks is, obviously, multiplayer and more content such as Survival mode. I can't imagine stuff I could build with my friends online and then take those flying piles of junk and gather resources.
