yeah and especially with how dangerous missiles are, you either need to go small or REALLY big to the point that they don't even affect you, which is massively wasteful in survival. so i think most large ships will probably be little ultra-efficient fighters with tons of forward engines
The very nature of SE weaponry places fixed limits on just how big and heavy ships can be for practical combat scenarios. You also don't want your ship's firepower thrown all over the place because the more of it placed in the command of a single person, the more efficient the design. I'd say you're probably right and 3 people is likely the most you will see for most ships. I suspect the two main ship types you will see are small frigate/cruiser type designs and large bombers. Anything else is either too big of a target compared to the value of their firepower or too small to defend themselves against gatling turrets.
There are some ways to make superheavy ships be able to soak up plenty of damage, including layered armour such as two shells of heavy armour with mostly empty space in between - the greatest hazard with explosive weapons is not that they penetrate your armour but that they destroy your equipment.
An assembler-refinery-generator combination deep enough in your ship should allow for repairs, but other equipment should mostly be located near where they're needed, so that even if the ship gets dissected the separate parts can still function and preferably even stabilise themselves over time.
The downside is that you need ludicrous amounts of firepower because you have to be able to disable an attacking enemy vessel enough for it to not escape, as there aren't enough thrusters and gyroscopes in this universe to make a megaship like this move fast.

Mega ships should be relying on gravity drives for main movement and/or fast acceleration.
I really really need to learn how to make those mechs.
i wish 2x1 blocks existed.
I wish you could configure whic face(s) of the blast door blocks are the shorter ones, like you can't really make elevators completely out of blast doors since its only actually smaller on 2 faces, which is great for sliding doors, but not other things.
im gonna need about 20 or so people manning my dreadnought
and then 360 more people for all the fighters it can fit
I noticed some inconsistent hitboxes with small ship blast door edges compared with large ones, didn't pistons have this too? Why does this keep happening?
I would also like to see some sort of shield generator that is set up in a way similar to the gravity fields.

Care to post a pic of the dreadnought? I am trying to have mine crewed by as few as 2.
I started working on a ship, kind of inspired by the red ship's nose.

I was really satisfied with how the front turned out, and started outfitting the interior with conveyors and such (which I had some problems with and gave up on for the time being)

Unfortunately, I ran out of inspiration for the back end. I made a copy and made a tentative rear in blue, but I'm not sure if it looks good:

Thoughts?
Well, I like the front & middle section, but not the tentative rear so much, feels too curvy for an otherwise simple & linear ship.
So my ship is coming along well

You need to significantly greeble-ify that thing, especially on those curves. Try adding weapon hardpoints and then little "bunkers" around those along with lines of heavy armor reinforcement in key locations.

also the most practical kind of fuckhuge ship is one that can deploy drones or large amounts of fighters (and has the bays to 3d print new ones or repair damaged ones)... carriers are where its at, if you can program drones or muster a crew to fight.
Just like real life though, drones are good at limited, simplistic missions, but you would need human pilots to be truly competitive.

I just finished laying down the armor still alot of work to go into it yet.A lot more is going into defense and offense I could put a Gatling turret onto a torpedo and fire it in way of drones, this was more of a testbed for an autloading torpedo clip some armor variations and to see how I liked a taller and deeper ship rather than longer. But we will see how it goes.
I built this clusterfuck about a week ago. It's not really that cool but it's one of the better things I've built lately. Needs a paintjob.

With all those engines it's still agile as a lubricated cinderblock.

this is my first time messing with the suspension wheels, does anyone know good settings to use on the wheels to make the vehicles control well?
I believe around 30% dampening for off road, 50%-70% for straight line gottagofast drag racing. Strength depending on weight of the vehicle. Also, more weight=faster for some reason. Also keep gravity blocks near center of mass, or when you turn, it will flip and tumble around like a hl2 buggy.

Spacehulk only needs one. Sit in one of the many bridges and ram stationary things/really unlucky things. Doesnt matter how much damage it takes, it needs no repairs because theres enough redundant systems on it to keep it running until you split into a couple hunderd equally sized peices. And then chances are most of those peices includes most of a ship that is still capable of flight.
I think rotors are bugged for me. I've spent hours trying to make retractable landing gears with rotating blast doors and the fucking things either turns the wrong way or don't turn at all
What pisses me off is I managed to do it, saved, and when I came back the rotors borked
Looks great, but I do notice its dark on the surface and would probably be pitchblack on my game.
bought the game a couple of days ago and since i can't come up with any designs of my own i went straight to mimicking homeworld.

This is an attempt at the Taiidan scout. the angled wings (used rotors to make them lean back) are very finicky and completely impractical since it makes the ship handle like a wet sock. especially when it goes retardedly fast by the 3 large thrusters.
but hey! it looks kinda nice i think!
Yo check out what some dude on Reddit put together

I've been working on this colossal (compared to my other stuff) thing for a while but I'm still not quite satisfied with the front part.
Any ideas for details? Or should I leave it as it is?

Now we just need life support/oxygen/airlocks
You guys are missing the point of this. You're not supposed to control them as the sole commander of a ship, you can have other players worry about aiming up to 4 turrets for each menu bar setup and target enemy weak points manually.
Though they do need to tie hotkeys to the menu buttons next.
What other players? :p
how do I get one connector to feed stuff into the other? I got a drill head on a few pistons which connects with connectors to the main ship (where it gets stored in a crate), but messing with the throw out, collect all etc settings does not do anything it seems.
