decided to use the pistons for a mining ship with extending drill head. It works fairly well, but it shakes around like a motherfucker and tends to lose a drill when fully extended. I tried adding a door over the drill hangar but it was too clumsy, and tbh looks fairly neat without. It uses 3 pistons so it extends quite a bit, but I couldn't take a pic of it fully extended as for some reason the pistons don't want to work anymore.

I've also been playing around with piston drills. They shake like hell and explode if I do more than one piston. So I'm thinking of trying something else next chance I get: put the drill on conveyor tubes and use pistons on the landing gear instead. It'll require a lot more pistons, but it might be more stable. Or not.
The other idea I'm entertaining is putting a small mining ship on the piston with a connector. I'm curious how the vibration of a few small drills compares to the vibration of one large one. You can enable lateral thrusters on the small ship that should reduce that vibration some, but it still might just slam the ship around inside the shaft until it explodes into shrapnel for all I know.
ive been toying around with a 6 axis gravity drive the last few days, and i think ive come up with a design that is less susceptible to and can be adjusted to battle damage.
so far, depending on the location of the damage i could shoot off a fourth to a third of the ship before it suffered major trim problems i couldn't adjust.
and i could shoot off more than half the ship before forward movement was adversely affected.
i just need to build a cool ship to show it off.
Small drill ship (4 drills at the front, 3 small thrusters per side) connected to a stacked pair of large pistons worked quite well. At first it was shaking around, but when I turned on the thrusters it came under control. Next chance I get, I'll try 3 pistons.
That's why I was asking for advice, it doesn't look too spaceship-y
A ship can look however you want. If possible, try it out with some friends in a combat scenario. If you find it's taking a lot of hits which can't be compensated for somehow, try and refine the design. But remember you're building in the New Space Age, where stuff doesn't have to be built on terra firma and launched any more. Personally, I think it looks like a funky civilian-oriented freight ship or something along those lines.
i cant wait until thursday when i can finally upgrade my RF-86's to Mk. VI with that new fighter cockpit by biomech
no idea how i'm gonna be able to make room for another 3 blocks worth of cockpit but i'll make it happen
I'm going to make a nice stylish warp drive ship today
Got bored and decided to put the Greeble II through a trial by meteorite shower. Noticed that the larger asteroids tended to succeed in damaging the arms, but the bridge section took the most concentrated hits to the same areas. The most common greeble element (the struts/supports/whatsits) would often succeed in preventing smaller asteroids from making a hole in the hull. Corners and flat surfaces suffered the largest holes.

Ribbed for your enjoyment
So are the Se Devs ever gonna fix the de-synch stuff that makes cargo ships and stuff invincible and unresponsive to control panel changes or trying to open the door?
Cause we can't really play on my dedicated till that stuff is fixed.
For the On/Off toggle on most of the blocks, there should be an option to make it a momentary switch, instead of an actual toggle. Also the Numpad should be allowed to input commands instead of the numbers above the keyboard.

The interior is mostly empty so I could turn it into anything I want. Maybe a sturdy, well defensed freight/civilian ship could work.
*sigh* If they only would add more decorative objects

The list of "Things to fix" is quite enormous so i am sure that issue is somewhere on that list, i hope i can make them do a feature freeze since every new feature also brings a heap of bugs with it.
I'm sad that I can't attach thruster to a block that's on a motor and rotate the motor while using the thrusters, it makes creating VTOLs too difficult for me.

But you can. Just set the appropriate buttons to your hotbar. One for making the rotor go, and another for engaging the thruster override.
Originally I used to use internal blocks as a sort of aesthetic attempt at an energy conduit sort of thing, or as faux brightly-lit windows. Now I find they make rather nice covers for conveyor pipelines. Trying to retrofit them on this ancient ship of mine, though, is a bit of a pain in the arse.

I wonder how much moddable will the game become after tomorrow's update

While this is neat it's just an edited thruster (yes I do realize the devs probably don't have enough time to work on something more complex to show off), I wonder if we'll be able to add blocks or tools with completely new functionality to the game.

I was just wondering was all. The earliest report for this issue I saw was like 19 days or so ago. So I was under the assumption that it is a common and known and replicatable issue. I was just unsure if it was actively being fixed or still in the queue so to speak.

Not yet. This is about workshop integration, not about modding API.
Ok, so i'm going through videos trying to learn this shit. On a side note, are asteroids completely static? are/will they ever be moveable? I have this idea for a ship designed to sort of scoop up entire rocks and manoeuvre them into a big drilly grindy thingy.. A big project to speed up mining.
[sp] Jokes, I want to try turning one into some kind of giant battering ram.[/sp]
Static ATM, devs talked about them being moveable but that was long ago, doubt they will be soon

This is really cool.
Not bad, apart from the fact that the legs on the same side lift up instead of front right/back left and back right/front left.
Seems the extended landing pad on the back is just big enough to fit this freighter i've had in my saves for a while.

Thruster damage is a more serious problem with large ships, even with a heavy armour base; so i'll probably trim the greeble on the sides so a ship can slide into place; avoiding blasting the pad on takeoff.
May not be much help for you with your landing pad, but my solution to small ship thrusters damaging large ship connectors has been to put the landing gear on pistons. The new toolbars and hotkeys has make this really easy. Dampeners off, extend the pistons, retract pistons, fly away.

Large ship small thrusters burn through heavy armour at surprisingly long distances. It's kind of a shame you can't limit the amount of thrust you get via the maneuvering controls to prevent that.
Of course, I guess you could set your up-thrusters to be in a group and only slightly turn them on to lift off via the quickbar?

Or different kinds of thrusters, propulsion (like they are now) and maneuvering (RCS style system, using storage tanks and gas from a new element) Maneuvering provide lesser thrust but do no damage and use less power but the new resource
Currently I just lightly tap the up thrust button with dampening off, let myself drift far enough, then fly off. Seems to work well enough.
Despite the damage, small thrusters on large ships have become much weaker in actual thrust in recent patches, it seems.
How about a spring-loaded landing pad? ;)
How about a spring-loaded landing pad? ;)
Why not a landing pad that extends/retracts with a piston, you a move the ship above it, then extend it, then pull the ship down with the pad?
How about a spring-loaded landing pad? ;)
Unless a recent update has made pistons less like breadsticks, prolly not. Does give me an idea for a carrier design, though.
When's update
