driving a tiny ship with two gatling guns on either side of the cockpit through an asteroid reminds me of descent
Oh man, that'd be a brilliant idea, if eventually we get to make our own maps. Just make one that's an asteroid mining base with all sorts of nasties inside.

10/10 would crash through wall and plunder
You'd probably go in one side and out the other.

Needs some kind of minimap, or the ability to put down a nav beacon or something. I got lost in one of the bigger asteroids pretty quickly.
I kinda wish they were building this game with multiplayer as the foundation, it seems like it should be a core feature for a game like this.

I mean like, big infinite servers with heaps of players

Starmade has something like that, and in my opinion it makes it feel rather empty. I much prefer this mode, it reminds me of some of the best parts of Spacebuild. The comradery of small groups, combined with the wonderfulness that is user defined gamemodes and ship designs.

Why would having large servers prevent doing that stuff though? You'd be able to do all that, then also have the capability of exploring and having large scale battles with other players, which IMO are two very important features of space games.
What are other games similar to this one? StarMade is quite similar and has multiplayer, though it has more blocky building.

Man, I hope we get to pick our colors, not choose from a small number of presets

Australian space bases are weird

So after 5 hours of just dicking around with throwaway ships and the destruction physics, I finally put together my first "real" ship.

The idea is a is a small mining craft that can take care of itself in a pinch. Features ample lighting and expandable cargo in the back via containers. It's not as ambitious as some of the awesome creations in this thread but I like the simplicity of dealing with small ships.

Well at least this looks like it'll be a very good solid first ship that'll actually be highly usable in survival. I'm going to make a note of it if you don't mind :v:
I'm already ready to get a few models into the game once the game gets the feature to put 3D models in (not textured yet):
The faces need to be smoothed. Badly. :v: Some Chamfer on edges would also look great at barely any cost to poly count.
Nearly finished with the engine section, and trying out a recessed bridge design. After this ship is done, I think i'll work on something that's a lot less of an attempt at making curvy ships. Something hard and angular, gunmetal grey and foreboding.

can you shoot guns

Not yet.
aw
I'm in the process of making something loosely based on the argon TL/TP from X3, no screenshots yet
Fuck. My ship has different levels of detail, because I started the front from inside and the rear from the outside. I ran into a couple problems because of that, and now I'm kinda disappointed by how it looks. Oh well, I guess I won't make the same mistake again, many more ships to come. And btw it's 85% done.
Just a little further to go with the exterior (front, and up/down thrusters), then it's onto the interior.

I fell off my barge that was going at 6m/s and the jetpack only goes 5.7m/s so with my split second decision I spawned a cockpit on the bottom and jumped into that. It was a lucky save.
Playing this game with the Blade Runner soundtrack is fucking amazing. It's a whole other level of spaceness.

If you strafe at the same time you go 8m/s

That is something they probably should fix along with the running strafe.
I learned yesterday that not having retrograde thrusters is a bad idea. Also, horizontal and vertical thrusters.
Why? Because this is space, and space doesn't stop.
Where are the saves located? I'm getting the urge to backup.

A WIP cargo station. There's a chute for small cargo crates at the top (indicated by the lights there), I am planning a similar section for big crates too.
