what machine are you running and on what electronics? I'm running a mendelmax2.0 on RAMPS 1.4 and never had much success with repetier, so I stuck with good ol marlin
It's a DeltaMaker, the print control software is Octoprint running on a Raspberry Pi and I'm not sure the actual control hardware itself. I'm not at work so I can't check. Repetier is pretty shit at slicing with Slic3r though. The only advantage is taking Obj's since Maya has issues with STL.

oh neat, never used a delta before. Everyone hails them as the future but I think cartesians and deltas both have their place tbh.
I've also wanted to get octoprint running with raspberry pi, but my uni's 3d printing club has a bunch of work underway porting firmware to run on better processors (ARM, rasp pi etc) instead of AVR, which should allow for higher speeds and better prints. Better Gcode too!
I'm so far off topic, my apologies. I've been not playing this ever since I built up anticipation for programming because I really want to play with that
Trekin, would you be willing to test out a small ship of mine? It has SABRE engines and vector thruster blocks and im not sure if that'll print correctly. If not, then i'll probably revert the print to the Ultimatum Mk. VI, before the SABRE and vector upgrade.
Hey if we have a modding API couldn't someone write a simple script that fills the interior of crafts with solid blocks? That should fix printing issues

fuckit my CSE roommate is on it seeing if its possible with the tools provided he can code I can print lets do this :v:
Neat! If any of you order these, be very very very careful, sandstone prints are extremely delicate! Great colors and showing of features though- you just can't do moving bits with them
I wonder how much it'd cost for me to get a print of the SS Greeble :v:

It's pretty shit because it's a first generation kickstarted product. We're basically beta testers. The design is promise, and it is absolutely mesmerizing to watch, moreso than cartesian printers, but it's pretty iffy in terms of print reliability and such.

I need one of two things, either A: An OBJ(not STL) file of it, or B: The save file and you tell me how to make an OBJ out of it.
Our printer prefers Repetier Host as its slicing manager. It takes OBJ's as well as STL's.
Birdman if you somehow send me the space hulk I can try it on our printer to test its structural rigidity.
[editline]6th October 2014[/editline]
Send it as an obj or stl that is.
Can you not just edit the 3D Model to remove the interior and just have it shell like any other print?
Would take time of course but surely someone can write a script that can do it automagically.
[editline]7th October 2014[/editline]
Oh, Ninja'd by a possibly simpler version of my idea.. I need learn to read ahead.

wait really?
Ill try to export it tonight, but I work too much.

also how do I get an .obj file from it?
Powder prints can be soaked in thin superglue which vastly increases their durability. Still fragile but a damn sight better than straight out of the machine. You need to use really thin super glue, like pink zap a gap. Be careful with large soaks too, as superglue setting is an exothermic reaction and I've had things go up in smoke before.
Missed a 3D printing job at a really prestigious architectural firm the other day, well pissed with myself.
I made a cool little fighter. The back reminds me of something out of WipEout.

I also made my first gravity cannon. You get over 200g standing in the centre and it can propel the Red Ship to 100m/s in one second.

I'm pretty excited for when programmable blocks come a long, I think it will inject some more life into the SP game for me. I find SP very boring currently and I don't have anyone to regularly play MP with.

That's why I need it as an OBJ instead of STL. My only 3D program is Maya and no matter what I try I cannot make it play nice with STL's. It's pretty trivial to get it filled myself, I just need it in a format I can edit.

I have no idea how you even export it as a model file. I don't know what the exporter outputs but if it does .3DS, .FBX, or .MA/.MB that works just as well.

Can you not convert the .stl to an .obj? SOrry I'm not that experienced in file format compatibility - I've only ever had to convert to .stl for printing but never really anything else.
A quick google result threw this up. Give it a try maybe?

blueprint dat gravity cannon
the issue of conversion of stl to obj is easy.
the conversion of .sbc to, well, anything else is the hard part. Hard enough that nobody else has ever done it, to my knowledge. Somehow these guys have a way to take the .sbc "blueprint" for ships and set them in a printable fashion. You could try contacting them but im not sure how willing they'd be to tell you.
I cant find any way of turning a blueprint into an obj, stl, 3ds, or any other 3d file, but heres the space hulk blueprint if anyone else cares to try:

Ive been meaning to add more ships, but as it stands right now, I cant work on it without pegging my cpu and experiencing ~5 fps.
christ might as well ship that thing off to a render farm for slicing its going to take eons

Ah, I thought there was a community made thing that did it. I know there was one in the past for 3D objects to space engineers stuff, surely it could be reversed, right?

Nah, it all depends on the size of the print. For something about 5" tall and 9" diameter with honeycomb infill and supports, slicing takes only about 35 minutes, depending on infill density.

news to me, last time I used slic3r a while ago anything complex just took forever. good to know its better
news to me, last time I used slic3r a while ago anything complex just took forever. good to know its better
Well it obviously depends on your CPU. I was slicing with a Xeon 1230V2 so it might take longer if you're on an i5 or forever if you're using AMD.

Sheesh man, i really wish that were the case.
Reversal when it comes to file conversion is really, really hard. You'd think it's not but it really is. The reason .objs and .stls are easily converted to .sbc is because .sbc is like a lego manual. this part goes here, this goes there, etc.
in essence, the .obj just becomes one big part. it's not really made up of the different parts available in SE. But it's difficult to take the many different parts and make them into one single object. The game engine doesn't consider the SHAPE the ship makes, just the location of the blocks.
Made a Super-carrier (well, "super" might be pushing it, but it's relatively big compared to what I tend to build)

It's probably stupidly impractical, and got shitloads of useless space, handles well enough though.
Also; tell me if the post is overly long, and I'll trim it down.
Jesus christ, that's almost as bad Box ships, I mean it has at least got a nice door, so you know, it's not completely terrible.
Those thrusters though, please download some mods and change them out.
Slim that down, get rid of some of that excess in the hangar area, make it either wider or taller than it is tall or wide, and find a way to give it a prow and stern and you have yourself a cool minimalistically styled carrier.
[editline]8th October 2014[/editline]
Rod shaped ships have such great potential to be really efficient space users, and can be a LOT more practical for survival (which is always a fun consideration when designing ships in creative), but I think the only issue here is there isn't a prow and you aren't using any large mod engines.
get the capital ship engine thing that isn't the titan
Launch the fighters by spinning it really fast a la Babylon 5.
