Still need a way of powering the artificial mass blocks, unless you spawn the reactors with uranium in them somehow.

build them with a connector or something and a battery to charge it a bit.
You could give them batteries and have them Temporarily connected to your ship's grid. Link up a timer and a grinder to your fire button or something so it detaches then get's launched. We could do with some other ways of transferring power, through connectors for example.

Timer blocks and connectors and or merge blocks.
I was thinking something like that episode of Star Trek Voyager where Voyager was retrofitted with replicators that would just manufacture additional armor on the ship on-demand.

Why not a merge block?

Interesting idea for quick repairs during battle.

Just keep a blueprint hologram projecting all the time, send out repair drones that patch up holes and whatnot. Sounds fantastic.

I dunno. Maybe I just don't get the full range of capabilities of this stuff.

Ablative armor? Yeah, that could be a thing. I wanted to do that for my ship but couldn't figure out a good way to do it that didn't make the ship look fat.

I've never seen ST, but, just in case that's what Star Trek calls it, that's not what ablative shielding is.

It can be done, you just need a shitton of welders and a good grasp of spacial orientation. it'd be like tetris.

LSG actually did it a while ago;

Proof that you can blow the SE reddit's collective mind just by using mods ontop of otherwise basic ships.
The large ship railguns on the workshop are no joke. I mounted a ton of them on a ship and it cuts the blue ship in half

Which ones? I've only found small ship ones (which are still fucking powerful)

I don't usually play into the whole website elitism thing, but yeah, there's a lot of fools on that subreddit. It's not as bad as some other places though.

I did find this on the front page though:

the subreddit is terrible, some guy was on the front page like 4 times for the same damn ship painted in different ways

is that a projection being used as an atmosphere/pressure-containing energy shield of sorts?
that's pretty cool
Fucking goddamn shit. The holograms almost caused my computer to melt. Using the hologram to repair my new ship was painful. Every time I placed a block my computer locked up for a good thirty seconds.
It works great for small ships though.
The devs need to spend some serious time chasing memory leaks. I was laying down the shell to a large ship (130 x 60 blocks or so) and it basically ground my computer to a halt. When I finally got the task manager open, Space Engineers was at 6.3 gigs of memory and climbing.
Yeah, guys, I think you need to work on that.

I never did get around to showing this...

Mk.10 Ultimatum with 4 small ship rail guns.
Here's the target, a 9-layer thick block of heavy armor.

4 guns penetrates, on average, 1.25 blocks of heavy armor PER GUN.
The new variant, i appropriately called the Shipbuster.
The ship came with cuts to all 4 rocket launchers and 4 guns, leaving only 2 guns for ship to ship purposes. If space engineers could actually support large scale combat, it would be a terrible idea to field only these ships, as they'd get cut to pieces by dedicated superiority fighters. Then again, if you could hit the enemy fighter even once with just one gun, it'd annihilate it. The long reload time severely punishes any miss though.

No fucking seriously though. He's not worth the extra attention, but that fucking ship has been on the front page in "different versions" about 15 times and it's not even good.

The Steam Workshop proves that the players can design good ships; the good ones usually just don't use that reddit. There's a reason a "successful" post on the sub maxes about 50 upvotes.
I assume the problem with the subreddit is that it plays host to the same crowd that watches LSG and plans those silly factions/companies on the Keen forums. They've been like that in the past, from what I recall; I remember there was one guy who legitimately thought SE would compete with EVE Online if they just added the right features, and he could not be convinced otherwise.

Nail on the head there.
*i am a space aesthete
*i am a space aesthete
"In this moment, I am a space aesthete. Not because of any phony engineer's blessing, but because I am enlightened by my own impracticality."
When I build ships in this they are basically just boxes. I don't care about things looking good, I care about robust design and shit doing what its supposed to do in an effective way.
Guess german design philosophy is my way of space engineering.
The welders were just on permanently
Yeah this imo is the best/easiest way to do it.
Just hook up the welders to your manufacturing and conveyor them all together. Have a little ship thats just projector and thursters. bring the hologram up to the wall of welders and slowly drag it back. Protip wait until the welders stop emitting sparks before dragging it back more otherwise you end up with unfinished bits the welders cant reach if you go too fast.
Try to fit/rotate the hologram so you pull the longest axis through the welder
I haven't tried this yet, but I'm assuming it's possible to do the large->small rotor thing, then put a holographic small ship block copy of a large ship inside the large ship's bridge just so it looks cool? :v:
It'd also be cool if someone made a mod that converts the large ship to small ship blocks and updates the holographic blueprint in to show damage, missing blocks, etc in realtime.
