One block was for shield capacity, one was for generating the shield itself. The shields often recharged faster than the weapons due to placement of a Fuckton of these blocks.

It becomes a race to cram as many shield gens and power sources inside your fugly badly designed hull to get a million HP and trash another else who hasnt crammed as many shield gens.
Shields are dumb and nonsensical anyway. I'm glad the devs ruled them out.
I love the idea of everything being a lot grittier than normal space games. Instead of clean lasers and glowing blue shields all encased in a white stainless hull of ship. It's more like railguns and kinetic weapons designed to rip through the hull of a dirty gray ship. It would mean you would have to protect the subsystems of your ship strategically whilst still maintaining its usability and accessability.
I also like the whole having to exit the ship and jetpack to the side of it and weld a breach or dent shut with only a space suit as protection instead of regenerating armour of shields.
Would make the whole game a lot more tactical and unique as space games go.
I would be ok with kind of a one-size-fits-all large ship shield that can only be turned on for 5-10 seconds before it would have to recharge for a minute or something
But no shields is good too. It makes people get more creative with hull structures that are stronger without just going "lol 3 layers".
Lasers are practical enough though they won't like as most people imagine them.
They'll look more like this. Only really glittering visible in the cloud of vaporizing hull

Imagine getting 5 people together in skype to crew a large ship. One captain, one to load the mass drivers, two for hull repair and one to keep internal systems running, like replacing destroyed converors and maintaining fuel levels.
Imagine the hillarity of the loader stealing uranium from the reactors as he runs out of ammo and pissing off the engineer.
I really like how anything has been added to the game; Facepunch has managed to weaponise it.

I like how people are hoping for new features and are already imagining ways to weaponise them.
interesting... your slug was 27,000 kg with what looks like 8 gravgens, minus the power of 1 (maybe 2) gravgens going the other way from the starting platform and red ship, and still punched a 3x3 hole through 3-5 spaced layers.
My slug was 11,126,000 kg with 720 gravgens. Imagine what kind of deadly force it would be capable of if the collision registered.
Anyone here good at physics?

In the reactors of the red ship on quick start 1
I disabled the gravgen on the platform, there was no point in having it there because if you even dared to turn of your jetpack in the starting are you just got blasted off into space..
This is really the first block-involved game that doesn't remind me of minecraft immediately.
i don't think you'll even really need any kind of protection against these kinds of railguns, since atm you basically need to stand directly in front of it for it to hit you anyway (plus they won't be able to move the gun itself without messing up the projectile's positioning, or at least not until you can use landing gears on them)
the missiles will be way more deadly and practical, especially once you can load them with explosives and uranium
Landing gear worked on my cargo-crate projectile, it's just the starting ships just couldn't actually lift it, as soon as it started moving it just tore through the platform..

Also, I think we need some sort of control over gravity fields, railguns are really impractical at the moment, one step to far and you wooshed off into space or stuck to a wall..
Just make sure your crew is all using jetpacks before you fire the railgun, otherwise you may do some unintentional boarding
Just make sure your crew is all using jetpacks before you fire the railgun, otherwise you may do some unintentional boarding
Or intentional, depending on your goals. It'd certainly be the quickest boarding ever.

"INTRUDE- nevermind they flew out the other side"
I still want to see someone build a working boarding pod.
I still want to see someone build a working boarding pod.
Just stick a cockpit with a few blocks on the front of it in a railgun.
You'll go through the first layer and get ejected out the cockpit as it's destroyed
ships arent affected by gravity
Derp.

You could build a small container out of blocks and put my railgun ammo in it and then put it in a railgun, but you may just explode out of the barrel..
I meant something more along the lines of shot out at high speeds with people in it (it has a gravgen) and then it crashes into something smashing the front on purpose and allowing them to go in. And if atmospheric things get put in and spacesuits have a limited amount of oxygen in survival then you cause a hullbreach of death and the crew may or may not die depending on weather they decided that wearing spacesuits in combat was a good idea or not.

I see a test of the Porcupine line of kinetic weaponry went well
[sp]if you can call 2 fps well[/sp]
we need a picture of this weapon.
and i need a pic of that ship

Was that just one shot or did you hit it several times?
the target is a ship from the workshop, the actual weapon is just a lot of projectiles (brick + antenna) docked to the frame. frame accelerates, I press p and stop, projectiles wreck shit :v:
there are going to be no shields in this game. The devs have already stated.
They were a pretty bad mechanic in starmade and generally substitutes substandard designs.
The shields concept was created in order to allow more creativity, but what it really did was limit it more because of how power worked in that game. There was a specific and intricate mathematical design for efficient and powerful generators, so you had to design a modern-art piece of a ship in order to get effective shields.
I remember generators alone larger than planets in order to get the best efficiency, it's was madness.
Although I did kind of find it fun if not just for the forcing thinking procedure it made you do.
The thing with starmade was the they never got anything properly balanced. It always ended up with the bigger ship always wins.
