It's part of the reason that I am uneasy about Shovel Knight's potential, as he most likely will have never had played the game and just make up a random moveset ala Little Mac, Wario or similar, canonically-unorthodox characters.

So a newcomer that "makes sense." First thing that comes to mind is K. Rool.

Here's hoping it's Isaac. Considering the Golden Sun music and no Isaac assist trophy, he would make a lot of sense as a newcomer. Otherwise, K Rool or Inkling seem to be the most likely.

Maybe it's an Inkling, since people had reason to suspect that Splatoon was getting a major update around the same time?

In terms of "making sense", think about what character might now seem obvious to the team in hindsight, but they hadn't guessed there was so much demand before the ballot.

Considering the mega-success of Splatoon, if Nintendo is smart they're gonna cash in on the DLC idea, so they've got to have been working on the Inklings since late June. If I'm right don't expect the Inklings to be released before the end of the year, it takes more time to make a character. Might tie-in with Wolf as a surprise announcement later in 2016 actually, since Starfox Zero was delayed.

Depending on how the team views the situation, they might've pushed themselves into a corner by accident.

I honestly cant think of any other Nintendo IP outside of the Squidkids.

Maybe not a Nintendo IP, but I'd like to see simon belmont. castelvania 1-4 were on nintendo consoles after all

I'd love to see Chaff Grenade (fucks up projectiles that go near it) and Stun Grenade (stuns enemies who get hit by it) as Grenade custom moves, and stuff like Claymores/Directional Mines (automatically blows up when someone is near) as C4, etc.
