In all honesty. I don't want King K Rool in smash. It may be because I was never a huge fan of the Donkey Kong Country series. But also he doesn't seem that interesting of a character. I can completely understand why people want him. A major villain of a popular game series that has low representation. I just really don't want him. I feel like the odd one out because a huge majority of Reddit and Smash Boards wants the rumored new character to be King K Rool.
I mean, if we wanna go by these rumors that have arisen, it's a Nintendo character. Someone that probably didn't top the Ballot, but WON'T be surprising.
It's something that everyone is gonna be really happy with, so all I can see it being is K. Rool or MAYBE Inklings.
Unless by "Nintendo character" they mean "character that is only on Nintendo consoles", which opens up a whole world of possibilities.
I'm still hoping for Wonder Red, that moveset would be amazing.
see that post would have merit if counters were actually good or useful
it's something that works maybe once or twice if even at all in a match
Having nearly a dozen characters with counters, especially on characters like Greninja, Little Mac and Lucario, is ridiculous, especially since over a dozen characters have them if including customs.
Honestly on Little Mac it makes sense. The entirety of Punch Out!! as a concept is counterattacking, after all.
In fact, if there were a universal counter, Little Mac's would be tied to a new KO punch system, turned into a star punch system instead. If you counter an attack, your repost is rather weak, but it sets up for a combo and gives you a star. Every star you get - up to three - makes your alternate neutral B more powerful, with three stars equating to the power of the KO punch, two being a charged upsmash, and just one being an uncharged one. This mechanic encourages more thoughtful, more defensive play that better mimics the source material; Little Mac is able to fell giants because he's smart and a quick thinker, not because he's a superhuman bulldozer.

I've had a similar idea to what you have in the past, but instead made it so you gain stars by interrupting players' moves with up tilt to make it less abusable than just giving him what amounts to PM's aura charge (Which has much weaker benefits in comparison) through counters and being upgradable. I do definitely agree he needs a system like that though and it would be a lot more pleasurable to deal with. I feel there are alternatives to giving him a counter, however. For example, they could just give him an incredibly quick sidestep and just make it a universal mechanic for subsequent, consecutive sidesteps to be worse than the preceding one, ala stale moves.
Little Mac needs to be redesigned from his Smash 4 incarnation entirely. A crappy recovery in a game where recoveries are great is dumb, but so is his copious amounts of super armor and KO Punch being able to IGNORE SUPERARMOR, COUNTERS AND SHIELDS.
The only moveset worse thought-out is Rosalina's, to be honest.

I mean I guess that kinda comes with the territory of someone who doesn't like the Donkey Kong series?
so hyped for the paper mario announcement!
K. Rool would be a wonderful announcement- he's unique (he's a giant lizard king/pirate/scientist), a boss villain, and has been high in the polls for years now. I'm gonna be happy with most other reps, though.

tbh this is true. I hardly ever counter. I'll use it every so often but most times I forget I even have it. it's extremely unsafe

It's best used as a mixup

FE counters are good against spacie-esque recoveries.
Sometimes.
I find a Counter is just a punish option. It's just a better option to shielding or sidesteping to an awfully predictable attack. Against a player who's good and actually tried to be unpredictable it's near useless.
If every character had one, it wouldn't have to be shitty just so it isn't unfair to characters that don't have one. IE, rather than some who have one that's passable at best, they all have one worth using.
They'd be much more diverse and personal too. For instance, DK's would be a command grab with customizable results, Samus' would retaliate with her stored charge shot, Bowser's would be enormously powerful but have a bit of startup (and armor), Rosalina's only works if you hit Luma, etc. Bit more interesting than just the same move with slightly different properties given to a dozen characters, isn't it?

honestly counters are fine as they are. they don't need to be any better. an unsafe reward for reads is fine
I think the problem with counters is the amount of them in Smash 4 and not the move itself.
If only like two or three had them it wouldn't be as bad. Honestly my thoughts on the matter are either give that option to everyone (take it off down-B and make it a global option out of shield), or strip it out completely (and still give those characters a proper move in its place)

Honestly by that logic we should also complain about the amount of up b recoveries in the game.
Gonna be spending the next 14 days excitedly waking up to see if there's 50+ new posts of news, and also dreading that it's just Postal fucking with me like he threatened to do

That's an awfully slippery slope you're standing on there.
Regardless, I suppose I've started to repeat myself, so I'll shut up about it.
Also what do you mean by proper move? You need to predict your opponent in order to use counters to their full potential.
I've had many cases where I was punished for countering at a moment my opponent knew I would, it's not like you can exploit the move by spamming or something.
Counters are fine. I agree there's too many of them but I've long since gotten over that. The only cases where I think counters are dumb are on characters like Palutena and Greninja where I feel like they just got lazy. Characters like Shulk and Little Mac are pretty much known for their counter-like mechanics in their respective games so I'm ok with it.
Also, not every counter is the same. Greninja's functions very differently from Marth's, for example.

Well to be fair for Palutena, all her moves are based on powers from Uprising, so it kind of makes sense for her to have it. Not sure for Greninja though, that could of just been laziness or just an excuse to have Substitute in the game.

His point was that considering that she got enough attention to make every custom move unique, it's kind of lazy to make he default down B the counter when her other down Bs behave differently. It would be even worse if Pit's and Dark Pit's counter customs were the default down B.
All counters should be replaced by Focus attacks

Screw that noise, it's all about V-Skills now.
