I'm kinda with him. It's a tad shallow but i wouldn't like Super Smash Bros nearly as much as I do if I couldn't play as Samus or Fox. The characters in Smash Bros are iconic, and when you put original characters into the mix the appeal dwindles a bit. I want to play as Marth, not "guy who fights kinda like Marth."
This Wavedash Games stuff probably isn't leading to a new IP announcement from the PMDT, however. If anything I feel like it's just going to be some sort of e-sports (I hate that term, for the record) event.
EDIT: Also, I believe when he says the gameplay for Smash is basic, he's talking about the core stuff. You don't have to memorize any kind of combos in Smash, all your moves are delegated to a specific button and directional input. In that sense Smash is a basic fighting game, it has a low skill floor.
And a ridiculously high skill ceiling, depending on the game.
Smash has basic entry understandings, but it has advanced applications of those basic mechanics. The thing that makes Smash stand out from other fighters, from a control perspective, is that everything can be mapped to 3 buttons and the control stick. Attack, special attack, shield. All varieties of attacks are based on player states such as grounded/airborne, command inputs, time syncing and press/hold, and grabs are shield+attack.
It's very easy for a new player to pick up a Smash Bros game, the barrier for entry is very approachable and the general concept of King-of-the-hill is very easy to understand. Having the game use familiar faces was a brilliant way to make the game easy to approach. Players are far more likely to invest interest in a game using characters that they know of than a game with entirely new IP that is unknown. Establishing a game world is challenging to get people excited for and requires a lot of work.
The deeper mechanics such as the different kinds of DI, shield timing, shield pressure, variable knockback based on damage (this gets taken even further with knockback growth on certain attacks), stale moves, ledge and edgeguard mechanics, teching off of walls and floors to halt knockback, and so much more.
What I personally love about Smash as a game is how it took this basic concept and added so much depth to it. Not only that, but it's very much a freestyle fighting game. You build your own combos on the fly due to how different characters have different weights and different damage %s yield different amounts of knockback to begin with. Then you add in the fact that the defending player can influence their knockback direction or tech off of particular hits, which opens up the read and tech-chase game so players have to stay vigilant on what their opponent is doing in order to keep pressure on them in mixup situations instead of the hit-confirm-into-full-combo present in arcade-style fighting games.
Sure, I'd probably still be playing Smash if it used its own IPs, but reusing flagship characters is what gets people unfamiliar with the game hooked when they see their favorites showing up.
If the PM guys want to go and make their own game then good luck to them. They're not going to make a living from working on PM their whole lives and Nintendo obviously doesn't want to give them the light of day.
is the entire pm dev team gonna work on the new game? aren't they gonna leave anyone on pm?
or are they focussing on both?

There's no confirmation that anyone on the PMDT is going to jump ship for a game that AFAWK doesn't even exist.

there's no confirmation that anyone from PMDT is even going to be a part of Wavedash games, and it's been confirmed that nothing regarding Wavedash will be affecting PM development.
we have no idea what wavedash is even going to be with only two names of people in the company known so far.
Speaking of PM, here is how 64, Melee, Brawl, Smash 4 and PM have faired in terms of character representation in major tourneys over the last 12 months.

It doesn't surprise me that PM has the most characters used in top 8 relative to the total amount of characters in said game. After all, it is made by people who fully understand competitive Smash Bros.
Also before anyone says that Smash 4 doesn't have enough variety should remember that the game is just about a year old now, couple how new it is with constant balance patches and character variety should go up the more people play.
the new shield mechanics are bonkers. I fucking broke someone's shield with crash bomb, metal blade, and leaf shield yesterday, which I don't think worked before. and then karma came and I got my shield broken by a samus, who apparently saw that omni vid and proceeded to bomb me at the ledge to meteor.
here I was worried about the dedicated shield breaking moves (marthcina b, dk side b) being nerfed and here I am seeing all kinds of wacky shield breaks anyway thanks massive hero sickraichu
this actually makes me happy because it means crash bomb is now a much more threatening pressure tool. if they sit and shield, the added stun from the explosion allows me to throw more shit at the shield and chip away at it even further. people gonna have to learn to spot dodge or just come at me and try to swap the bomb onto me more often, both of which I can punish.
Everything is going down next Monday. Including Smash.

Shield Breaker is now more like Shield Damager.
Shield Breaker is now more like Shield Damager.
which is fine considering how much easier it is to break/pressure shields in general

Wait, assuming I read this correctly, the Wii Shopping Channel and the DSi Shop is going down too?
So i finally got around to installing project m (just on my pc for now) and well I picked Ganondorf and tried to do an arial warlock punch I've never been more confused in my life.
Speaking of Project M, is there anyway to get rid of the slight input lag on Dolphin? I'm playing using the Wii U Gamecube controller adapter.
This guide helped mine run smoother and stopped it from crashing:

I know I made some mistakes (Like the spam countering) But this was still a fun battle.
You need to stop rolling so much, at some points it seemed like yours (and his) primary mode of movement. Aside from the that and counter spamming (which against a good player would be punished to oblivion), incorporating some kind of aerial game into your play would improve your play so much. Roy has nice aerial approaches, so use them.
A lot of the time you were just stood there throwing out smash attacks until he hit them, or when you have time for a punish you did just a dash attack. Down throw doesn't go into Up-Smash either, but you still did it multiple times.
I dreamed that the new character was revealed to be May from Pokémon and she used Heracross, Pangoro, Darmanitan, and Oshawott.
I had no idea how to feel

About the down throw to up-smash, I was trying to go into up-a but kept messing it up, but still thank you for the tips.

A good tip to help with this is to re-bind the C-stick to Attack instead of Smash. Smash attacks are slow and deliberate anyway, so getting the timing down for them should come natural, but inputs can sometimes be done too quickly when trying to do a Strong attack and it comes out as a Smash attack instead.
I personally also disable Tap-Jump, so I can freely hold Up without accidentally doing a jump when I want to attack.
Mix and match what feels most comfortable to you.
so i've been picking up snake in pm
holy fuck this is so much fun
What are some advice to go against links? I always have trouble because they really put the pressure and a wall of projectiles.
Its usually
Boomerangs.
Then bomb
Throw bomb
Repeat.

I've had friends ragequit after I've done the tranq>c4>grab>upthrow>detonate KO several times

who do you play? shield-stopping and attacking through projectiles works, or a reflect move if your char has one. you could also learn the timing for catching bombs. link has pretty slow moves so as long as you approach safely and patiently you can probably beat him up close

Use Fox. Or Falco, or Mario, or any character with a reflect really, but Fox has the easiest time getting in quickly so they can't space you as effectively, if at all.
Also Falco's laser interrupts Link's animations and prevents them from being able to shoot/throw stuff at you, so there's that too.
[editline]t[/editline]
The key to fighting spammy Link players (or projectile happy characters in general like Robin) is to make it abundantly clear that spam isn't going to work. Spend a minute or so just shielding, dodging or reflecting their attempts, and they're more than likely going to get the message and actually try to fight you, often failing miserably.
speaking of, does anybody else feel like the timing for reflectors is too lenient in Smash 4?
not matching up with the animation is one thing, but when i play well, making sure to hold my charge blast until Mario has already pressed side+B, it can still get reflected, despite his cape being totally behind his back.
No, it's not impossible to land a blast in between capes, but the window seems really small, exacerbating already poor matchups between Samus and Mario, Falco, etc.
They really need to spill it on the new character already. The wait is killing me.

Well according to the Twitter circlejerk we are supposed to get something this week
But it's already Saturday and we don't even have the slightest thing Nintendo related to look forward to. I call bullshit.
Sunday isn't here yet!....if we hear nothing next week I am calling the whole new character thing bullshit until they prove otherwise.
