Yeah, that's something that I feel like I want to do but is so risky that its tough to bring myself to do it, especially because of how bad I am at punishing rolls in the first place.

anyone got any advice on how to get better that isn't just "practice" ?
other than watch videos of what people better than you do, really the best way to get better is to play the game more.

start by picking a main and getting used to their kit. there's character specific forums on smashboards so you can go there for info on your character's bread and butter combo's and general strengths/weaknesses, matchup guides etc.

playing people in person and entering tourney's is really fun and smashers are usually pretty helpful and welcoming to newcomers. even if there aren't events nearby though you can at least join an fb group and ask to play low lag wifi matches with people closeby.

forgot to mention, this site is really good if you want to watch tournament footage [url]https://vods.co/smash4[/url] , you can filter it for specific characters/stages. studying what pro's are doing is a good way to get an idea of what works and what doesn't in certain situations.

This is what I did. Also, stop at around AI level 8. At level 9, they play ridiculously and really don't teach you anything but bad habits.

Honestly any AI is going to teach you bad habits. The best bet on getting better at the game is playing other people that are better than you.

That really depends. If literally every game is a curbstomp then you won't learn anything because you're not given the chance.

Eh, I get a lot of mileage off of playing people worse than me too. If I do something really dumb against someone bad than it'll be a lot more obvious and apparent.
I practice against level 1s, 3s, and 7s, and in training mode, and also play For Glory to train as well. I really want to get a scene going around where I live (which will be pretty easy honestly) and that will be my preferred method of play-lagless offline matches.

if you're playing someone way better than you they're probably good enough to give you valuable advice. that's one of the best ways to improve actually, getting immediate advice from somebody really good who can pinpoint exactly what you're doing wrong.

That's true but you can't do that in For Glory. So it kinda really depends on whether or not you actually know someone who can teach you. I know a good handful of people who are good at other fighting games that I want to get better at, but I'm too much of a shy idiot to ask them. :v:

you're better off using anther's ladder or joining a netplay skype group or something rather than playing FG. you can actually talk to your opponent, you're not restricted to FD and you can avoid lag.

Yes but now he's even better his F-tilt and Jab are fast as fuck now. His attacks are as smooth as eggs now.

yeah bro
unless you wanna throw diagonally for zoning, better option for metal blade is to throw it down, then pick it up (preferably by jumping and IMMEDIATELY airdodging, as it allows you to keep moving while picking up the MB). when picked up like an item, it flies faster and does more damage per hit, at the expense of being able to fly diagonally. you can also soft drop it with z or grab in the air, which means you can send it down at a different speed and also act immediately afterwards, since it doesn't require any animation. crash bomb is a good pressure tool. your opponent will likely take one of two routes when stuck with the CB: shield, or rush you down to try to attach it to you. try to read out how they'll react and you can get a good punish going on them.
the best place for your opponent to be is at midrange. at the very closest they should be where the end of the pellet range is. if they get too close, a point blank neutral air will push them way back, and a point blank jab (read: shooting pellets without moving forward) will push them back juuuust enough for you to short hop backwards and get out of there. short hop forward airs are good, but they have a bit of endlag, so try to move backwards with them to keep yourself safe.
remember you have a wall jump, which can extend your already ridiculous vertical recovery range.
uptilt kills anything at 90 and above. if you catch your opponent trying to dashattack, shield it and immediately uptilt out of shield. it takes some practice since the sweetspot range is so short, but its satisfying.
