Man, it seems like 90% of the guys I fight online only run right to the ledges of the stage, where they wait for me to attack, only to do some defensive counter attack combo they learned in training mode. And then they repeat that for the rest of the match.

They literally don't do anything else, they just sit there and stare until you come to them

that's just the best strategy for most characters in this game other than like sonic or falcon or something.

But where's the fun in that? I mostly win against them and I'm always all over the place. They don't even try to do anything else, even when they're losing.
that's for glory for ya

It's not named For Fun for a good reason.

Believe me, I'd play For Fun all the time if they had a option to play an 1 on 1 stock match. Or any match that isn't on a 2min time limit.
For Fun isn't fun
For Glory isn't fun
Smash 4 Online with anyone isn't fun.
For Glory would be more fun if it had battlefield on rotation with 50% chance, and matched you with other players of your skill level.
I wish that in the future Omega Mode just makes the stages simple, not all of them into FD clones.
I'd be fine with Battlefield, PS1 (default), and Smashville clones for example

Well ain't this a throwback?
every game i go into on for glory i have a half a second of input lag. i'm using a wired gc controller and my internet is 125 mbps download and 12 upload. i have probably had less than ten games ever with less input lag
The Megaman stage would be such a decent competitive stage with just the platforms, and no shitty ass yellow devil to fuck shit up.
Stage bosses are a terrible idea.

It's usually because of the distance between you and your enemy, which is why For Fun sucks because its lag is dependent on its weakest connected person
Little Mac is the best character in the game
The only times I'm having fun playing games is with RL friends and online friends.
Otherwise, I get no enjoyment out of it unless I'm tired to the point of laughing like an idiot over stupid mistakes/shit happening.
And it's not just Smash. Other online games as well, like Splatoon where you get paired with horrible players or just lagging matches that screws over all kind of input.

What really gets my goat is that a lot of the annoying stage hazards are disabled in 8-player Smash, probably because the framerate would suffer if they were present. Nintendo clearly has a switch built into the game to disable big stage hazards, but they just REFUSE TO LET US HAVE IT. It wouldn't take much work at all to make a simple toggle switch, but apparently they think they know better.
And this is exactly why I liked Brawl more.
Most of its Stages weren't FD, but were much more unique.
But weren't too out there to be completely destroyed buy the stupid Stage Boss Gimmicks.

Yeah but Brawl's gameplay isn't as polished and fluid compared to Smash 4 and the online was literally unplayable 90% of the time. Smash 4 can also get patches reliably.
I'd take Smash 4 over Brawl any day.
I actually got to play brawl again at my sister's house the other day. It felt like total ass gameplay wise. Never again.
What's this... "Brawl" you speak of?
No, seriously, I want to forget how much of an ass that game was. The only thing it's good for nowadays is as a base for PM.
Brawl? You mean the Project M homescreen
all jokes aside Brawl was the worst for game mechanics but I'd be lying if I said I didn't love the SSE
brawl is pretty similar to smash4 just with tripping, meta knight, and stupid chain grabs. there was some cool janky stuff in brawl though, i always thought brawl diddy in particular was pretty cool to watch.

I never played Melee but I always loved 64 the most. Mainly because I actually was good at it while sucking at Brawl and now at Smash 4/WiiU/whatever

i think 64 is super underrated. 64 is the perfect game for people who are interested in getting into melee or PM and need a stepping stone, it's not that technically demanding compared to melee and has pretty straightforward mechanics, but you still have a lot of control over your character, the gameplay is aggressive and exciting, the combo's are sick as hell and it's pretty damn balanced. also even though it has less characters than the other games, the variety is solid among them and most of them are viable.

only issues are lack of stage variety and lack of c-stick
I have a lot of memories with Brawl. I wasn't disappointed at the time because I was young and I didn't play competitive Smash. I look back on it today with a bit of cringe, but at the time, it was unlike no other. Brawl is the only game I was fortunate enough to get on launch. I waited like 2 hours outside of Gamestop at midnight with my dad and my sister. The hype was unlike any other I've had. I played through Subspace Emissary with my little sister. Mained King Dedede and I just had a whole lot of fun with the game. I could never hate Brawl for that.
I look back on it today and I can completely understand why people think it's the worst Smash. It's floaty, slow, and unpolished. The only thing Brawl has over any other Smash is co-op content. In Brawl, you could do all of the 2-player co-op events online. You could also do Multi-Man Brawl and Homerun Contest online. Why didn't this carry over the Smash 4 is beyond me and it disappoints me every single day. Smash 4 has so much "2 player" focus but none of it can be taken advantage of in an online environment and that fucking sucks. Also why can't you train amiibos online? There was just so much missed potential in that department.

Minority opinion but I think 64 comp > Melee comp.
Granted I also like SFII and SFIII more than SFIV. :v:

i like 64 and melee equally but a lot of people who are into 64 only play 64 and i can see why, it's like pure competitive smash. it has a lot of the fundamental stuff that melee has, and the fact that it doesn't have all the mechanical depth of melee draws emphasis to those fundamentals. playing 64 actually helps a lot with the way i approach melee and reminds me to keep things simple sometimes.
Man, is there any advice on how to get good at grabbing? Those guys I fight online ALWAYS manage to grab me, but when I try it I never hit them because I'm too far away or because they somehow manage to dodge it and counter-grab.
Also I still can't find a character to stick with. I'm best with Ike, but Ike's way too slow and that's what's getting me killed. I'd like a fast, agile character, but I don't know which one to pick. Any recommendations? (besides Captain Falcon, I used to play im on 64 all the time, I'd like to try something different) I tried to get good with Roy, but I suck with him. The special combo only works now and then and I'm still bad with regular hits in general.

ZSS is a good fast character. I'm personally not a fan but others definitely seem to be.
